CAPPS TAKES UNFORGETTABLE RIDE WITH ANDRETTI DRIVING

Ron Capps has been acquainted with auto racing legend Mario Andretti since he drove for their mutual friend, drag-racing pioneer Don “The Snake” Prudhomme. Capps even has visited Andretti at his Eastern Pennsylvania home. But he hadn’t seen Andretti in a long time.

Their reunion Saturday morning at Long Beach, Calif., was something the current NHRA Funny Car champion said he’ll never forget. He got to be a passenger for Andretti’s INDYCAR Experience two-seater ride-along – and when he emerged from the back seat, he declared, “Holy s---! That was awesome!”

DANIEL PHARRIS PILOTED A FLYING CORVETTE, LITERALLY

Up until a week ago, Daniel Pharris described his driving status as piloting a Radial vs. The World Corvette. It's a term, he says, will never have the same feeling.

Pharris, during the semi-finals of the Radial Revenge Tour, had the misfortune of becoming the pilot of an identified flying object, an airborne Corvette which pulled a massive wheelstand and took flight. The errant race car flew an estimated 60-feet into the air before floating to a reasonably smooth landing in the shutdown area of Tulsa Raceway Park.

"It really didn't settle in what had happened to me until about an hour afterward," Pharris admitted. "I piloted that car. I was kind of waiting on the FAA to show up to do an inspection.

VANDERGRIFF TO RETURN IN HOUSTON; FIRST OF THREE RACES

tf winnerA retired drag racer can only hit so many golf balls. At least this appears to be the case for multi-time NHRA winner Bob Vandergriff Jr.

Vandergriff will return to the land of 10,000 horsepower with a part-time sponsorship from Valvoline, starting with the NHRA Springnationals outside of Houston, Texas.

"I can never get tired of hitting golf balls," Vandergriff admitted. "I’m still going to keep doing that no matter what."

DOCTORS CLEAR GLIDDEN TO PARTICIPATE

Billy Glidden is free to return to drag racing once he has a race car.

Glidden was cleared from his physician last Friday to return to competition following an accident while testing which left him with five broken ribs and bruised lungs.

"It’s good that I’ve been cleared, but the celebration is short-lived since I don't have anything to race with," Glidden said. "So we’re still stuck in the same place."

Glidden doesn't have a timetable when he returns. The replacement car, a chassis formerly owned by Dan Stevenson, is in Jerry Haas' shop being prepared and reskinned as a Mustang.

LAGANA TO RACE APRIL 14 WITH RAI AT WILLOWBANK

Dom Lagana is an occasional NHRA Top Fuel driver – and so much more.

He operates his family’s Nitro Ninja Dragster along with older brother Bobby, giving such racers as Tripp Tatum and Ashley Sanford a career boost. He serves as a crew hand for recent No. 1 Las Vegas qualifier Steve Torrence. He’s a key reason longtime racer Scott Palmer is enjoying his best performance year ever. And when he gets the chance, he advises European racers.
