IHRA PRESIDENT'S CHOICE NATIONALS FINAL RESULTS

The record-setting trend set on Friday continued Saturday at the IHRA President's Cup Nationals.  Cary Goforth (Pro Stock), Bob Malloy (Nitro Motorcycle), Tim Boychuk (AMSOIL Nitro Funny Car) and Kevin McCurdy (Pro Mod) took their respective titles at Maryland International Raceway.

Goforth entered the event three markers out of the points lead and dominated the day.  He was the No. 1 qualifier, ran the table in eliminations and took the points lead after the season's third race.  He defeated Brad Waddle, John Pluchino and Trevor Eman on his way to the winner's circle.  Goforth was the only No. 1 qualifier that advanced past the first round of eliminations; it was his second win in three races this season. Texas Nationals winner and previous Pro Stock points leader John Konigshofer did not qualify for eliminations.

THRILL RIDE NETS CAPPS FRIDAY’S NO. 1 FUNNY CAR POSITION

Tennessee’s Bristol Dragway is about 700 miles from Walt Disney World, but it definitely had the E Ticket ride Friday for Funny Car’s Ron Capps.

That’s the slangy designation for the coolest, hippest, most thrilling rides at the Magic Kingdom theme park. And that’s what Capps’ 3.884-second, 323.66-mph trip down the 1,000-foot course in his Don Schumacher Racing-owned NAPA Dodge Charger felt like, he said after using it to take the tentative No. 1 qualifying spot at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals.

TOP FUEL’S TORRENCE SETS BRISTOL RECORD IN NABBING TOP SPOT AGAIN

Steve Torrence sat in the water box at Bristol, Tenn., and watched as his crew chief, Richard Hogan, and tuning consultant Alan Johnson agreed that this Capco Contractors / Rio Ammunition Dragster was about to reel off a 3.74- or 3.75-second elapsed time on the 1,000-foot course.

They were right on the money, as Torrence powered it smooth and straight down Bristol Dragway’s left lane to a 3.745-second track-record E.T. at a class-fastest 324.12 mph to secure Friday’s provisional Top Fuel No. 1 qualifying position for the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals.
