TORRENCE FASTEST TOP FUEL QUALIFIER FRIDAY AT SUMMERNATIONALS

Some athletes don’t believe in momentum. Others swear by it. But for Top Fuel pilot Steve Torrence, he falls somewhere in-between.

Clearly possessing some form of positive momentum following a strong showing one week ago in Epping, N.H., Torrence also knows that his team is working with a really good racecar right now and it is so much more than momentum carrying the team at the moment.

CAPPS, TORRENCE, LINE AND KRAWIEC LEAD QUALIFYING FRIDAY AT ENGLISHTOWN

Ron Capps set a track record and raced to the qualifying lead in Funny Car on Friday at the NHRA Summernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), Jason Line (Pro Stock), and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders in their respective categories at the 10th event of 24 on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

AUSSIE DRIVER PAVEY RETURNS TO TRACK AFTER VIOLENT CRASH

Pro Slammer racer Russell Pavey wanted to make an impact at the City of Ipswitch Winternationals. The kind he ended up with at Willowbank Raceway wasn't what he envisioned.

Pavey was making a qualifying attempt on Friday in his 1963 Corvette when he encountered severe tire shake. The car made an abrupt left-hand turn and impacted the retaining wall. The momentum of the out of control car carried it up the wall resulting in a flash fire. The car came to a stop, and emergency crews extracted Pavey, where he was transported to the nearby Ipswitch Hospital where he was kept overnight for observation.

Pavey was released on Saturday morning and returned to Willowbank Raceway.

SNIDER, JACKSON AND RIVENBARK LEAD FIRST DAY PDRA SUMMER DRAGS QUALIFYING

Brandon Snider stands on the cusp of his second No. 1 qualifying effort after three qualifying sessions at the PDRA Summer Drags in Martin Michigan.

Joining Snider atop the leaderboard was Stevie "Fast" Jackson [Pro Nitrous], Kevin Rivenbark [Pro Boost] and Eric McKinney [Pro Extreme Motorcycle].

NHRA TO HONOR DOUG HERBERT AS GRAND MARSHAL AT NHRA SUMMERNATIONALS

Former Top Fuel racer Doug Herbert will be honored as the grand marshal at the NHRA Summernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, June 9-12. The NHRA Summernationals is the 10th of 24 events on the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.

Herbert, from Lincolnton, N.C., raced in Top Fuel from 1992 to 2009. He won 10 national events in 28 career final round appearances. Herbert broke through multiple performance barriers in Top Fuel as well. He was the first driver to run in the 4.80-second range with a 4.880 at the 1992 Winternationals in Pomona, Calif. In 1993, he became only the second driver to exceed 300 mph (301.60) and the first to run that fast during eliminations.

NHRA ELIMINATES OILDOWN FINES DURING QUALIFYING AND TIME TRIALS

NHRA’s competition committee announced it will eliminate all monetary fines for any oildown violations that occur during qualifying rounds and time trials. The policy applies to all teams, both professional and sportsman classes, and is effective starting at this weekend’s NHRA Summernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J.

Monetary fines will continue to be enforced for oildown violations that occur during eliminations and points penalties will still be enforced for all oildown violations, in both qualifying and eliminations.

OPPORTUNITY TOOK WORSHAM FROM BMX RACER TO NITRO CHAMPION

Today's drag racing world offers a calculated path to racing nitro. Starting at five years old, a kid can climb behind the wheel of a Junior Dragster, and when they are older, they can visit a drag racing school or even rent an instructional ride in an A/Fuel Dragster through Anthony DiCero's Nitro University.

Or, they can just take the Del Worsham route of hopping off of a BMX bicycle and jumping right behind a fire-belching, nitro-burning engine.

NHRA MELLO YELLO SERIES TO OFFER HIGH-PERFORMANCE SHOWCASE DURING 2017 SCHEDULE

The 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule was announced by NHRA officials. FOX Sports, through its national broadcast network and Fox Sports 1, will provide exclusive television coverage in 2017, with live coverage of many of the events, featuring action from Friday and Saturday qualifying rounds and Sunday finals.

RIVENBARK RIDES UNBEATEN PRO BOOST STREAK INTO PDRA SUMMER DRAGS

Martin, Michigan will come alive this weekend as the Professional Drag Racers Association (PDRA) rolls into US 131 Motorsports Park for the PDRA Summer Drags, the northernmost event on the nine-race 2016 PDRA schedule.

One of the biggest stories heading into the event is the dominance of Kevin Rivenbark in the GALOT Motorsports Park Pro Boost class. The North Carolina driver won all three prior PDRA events this season behind the wheel of his supercharged GALOT Motorsports 2015 Corvette. Surprisingly, he doesn’t feel any particular pressure to maintain his undefeated record.
