JOHNNY GRAY WAITS FOR SPONSORS TO PROVIDE 2011 PLAN

Johnny Gray failed Saturday to make the Pro Stock field for the Automobile Club of graySouthern California NHRA Finals, hunting but never finding the electrical gremlin in his NTB Pontiac GXP.

But he still has something exciting to focus on this weekend -- his blueprint for the 2011 season.

During qualifying Saturday, he addressed rumors that he will be moving to Don Schumacher Racing or possibly another team -- perhaps returning to the Funny Car class.

However, he played his cards close to the vest, saying he knows that TCB Retail Group is making plans for him but he doesn't know what they are.

KRAWIEC GETS BIKE VICTORY AS SEASON BOOKEND

Eddie Krawiec knows the Pro Stock Motorcycle class can be crazy.
 krawiec
He won the 2008 championship as only the second competitor ever (after Rob Bruins' Top Fuel feat in 30 years before) to do so without inning a single event. The following year he won five races in 11 final rounds and didn't win the championship.

So he simply rolled with the punches in 2010 aboard the Vance & Hines Screamin' Eagle Harley-Davidson. And with his Automobile Club of Southern California Finals victory Sunday -- in which he set the national elapsed-time record in the final round -- Krawiec book-ended his season with his only two victories.

In a final-round battle between the two previous champions, Hector Arana (2009) red-lighted and, knowing he had disqualified himself, slowed to a 15.651-second, 45.62 clocking.

MOPAR'S AJ GETS INVOLVED WITH B.R.A.K.E.S.

Team Mopar® NHRA Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson and NHRA Top Fuel driver Doug Herbert are joining forces to award 36 high school students from Greenville, Tenn. a free trip to a B.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe) driving school at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte, N.C on Saturday, Dec. 4. Johnson and Herbert will give presentations and vehicle demonstrations about the event to Greene County Schools and Greeneville High School students on Thursday, Nov. 18.

Johnson, a life-long Greeneville resident and graduate of South Greene High School, is a passionate supporter of B.R.A.K.E.S., founded by Herbert after his two young sons lost their lives in an automobile accident. The organization trains and educates teenage drivers and promotes safe and responsible driving.

Johnson donated $10,000 to help fund two B.R.A.K.E.S. driving schools at the Third Annual Benefit Dinner during the September NHRA event in Charlotte, one of which will be dedicated to students from Greeneville. Johnson will also pay to bus the local students and their parents from Greeneville to Charlotte and will provide lunch and dinner for participants.

FORCE, BROWN, GRAY AND KRAWIEC WIN NHRA FINALS

John Force clinched his NHRA-record 15th Funny Car championship on Sunday to complete an improbable and emotional comeback from the horrific accident forcein Dallas three years ago that left his racing future in serious jeopardy.

The 61-year-old Force – who also won the race, his sixth of 2010 – became the oldest champion in NHRA history on the same day that the Series crowned its youngest champion as well, 20-year-old Pro Stock Motorcycle rider LE Tonglet. Earlier Sunday, Larry Dixon clinched his third Top Fuel championship and first since winning back-to-back titles in 2002-03.

With the championships decided by the semifinals, attention turned to the individual event champions and the three drivers who joined Force in the Winner’s Circle at the 46th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals, the 23rd and final race in the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Series season, were: Antron Brown (Top Fuel), rookie Shane Gray (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle).

TORRENCE BATTLES THE DISTRACTIONS

It would be easy for Steve Torrence to be distracted this weekend. There’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding his torrencefuture in Top Fuel racing.

“Lot’s of rumors floating around,” said Torrence. “Until I get a call, or someone else gets a call … it isn’t going to change the way I race this weekend. I’m driving this car the best I can. We are out here trying to get a win.”

Torrence isn’t so naïve that he’s oblivious to the banter floating around the pits suggesting he’s one of two rumored drivers to get the job driving the Fram Top Fuel dragster soon to be vacated by Cory McClenathan. He’s even heard that he’s the frontrunner for a Funny Car ride in 2011.

If he doesn’t get the gig, he might be out of professional racing indefinitely.
