ROUND-BY-ROUND RESULTS FROM 2023 NHRA SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT NATIONALS

Final round-by-round results from the 16th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park, the ninth of 21 events in the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series:

PRUETT, ALEXANDER, HARTFORD AND ARANA JR. RACE TO WINS AT SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT NHRA NATIONALS

Leah Pruett wrapped up her impressive weekend with her first Top Fuel victory of the season for Tony Stewart Racing, knocking off points leader Justin Ashley in the final round on Sunday at the 17th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Motorsports Park.

Blake Alexander (Funny Car) Matt Hartford (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana Jr. (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also won at the ninth of 21 races during the 2023 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season.

Pruett, who was also the No. 1 qualifier, powered to a run of 3.761-seconds at 326.79 mph in her 11,000-horsepower Dodge Direct Connection dragster in the finals, driving past Ashley to earn her 11th career win and first at Summit Motorsports Park. Pruett also jumped to third in points with the victory, snapping Ashley’s streak of 11 straight round wins. To get there, Pruett had to get past Kyle Wurtzel, defending event winner Mike Salinas and Austin Prock. She also jumped to third in points with the fantastic showing, giving her plenty of momentum heading out to the NHRA Western Swing.

THE BADER WAY SHINES THROUGH THE NEXT GENERATION

Bill Bader Jr. looked out at the rain-soaked Summit Motorsports Park, and despite the unfavorable weather, dozens of other pressing issues were running through his head ahead of the Summit Racing NHRA Nationals.

The customer experience was not the best, as almost every ticketholder scurried for shelter.

“That was the biggest thing on my mind all week,” Bader said. “Making sure that we have done our level best to meet or exceed our guests’ expectations that’s the ultimate measuring stick. It’s not profit and loss; it’s never been profit and loss; it’s been your level of guest satisfaction. We must continue to meet or exceed expectations, or we fail.”

HART DRIVES HIS R+L PARTNERSHIP AND FAITH INTO THE FAST LANE

Josh Hart walked over to the fence at Summit Motorsports Park and looked at the giant R+L Carriers loading dock. It was busy for a Friday afternoon, unlike the pits, as rain fell on the track. He was hoping for a break in the weather where he could represent the same trucking company that advertises it can ship "anything, anywhere, and at any time."

It was a moment of reflection for Hart, who described his marketing partnership with R+L Carriers as a program he wouldn't have imagined having in a million years. The Top Fuel driver who won in his professional debut said the program has been more of a learning experience than anything.

FUNNY CAR NO. 1 STARTER TASCA PUTS SPLENDID SPIN ON SAD CIRCUMSTANCE

Instead, the tenor of his talk was modest, unpretentious, content.

The Funny Car owner-driver of the Motorcraft/QuickLane Ford Mustang had earned his third No. 1 qualifying position in nine Camping World Drag Racing Series events Saturday evening at the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals at Norwalk, Ohio. The 12th No. 1 start of his career came on the heels of a weekend at Bristol, Tenn., in which he won the postponed New England Nationals from Epping, N.H.

But rather than giving in to braggadocio, Tasca chose gratitude, even for a situation that didn’t start out as one of his most pleasant ones. By this ninth of 21 races on the tour, after a disappointing season that ended with a slap in his face, Tasca flipped the script with some candid insight.

IT’S THE SAME, BUT DIFFERENT, FOR PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE’S STILL-PHENOMENAL HERRERA

Gaige Herrera is the Pro Stock Motorcycle class’ No. 1 qualifier at Norwalk, Ohio, for the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals.

But he isn’t exactly the same Gaige Herrera who went on a tear at the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series’ first three bike appearances.

He still is the leader in the standings. He still has three victories. He still has won 14 of his 15 race-day passes. He still has led the field at every race. And so far, he still has set the low elapsed time at every event.

But Gaige Herrera no longer is perfect on the racetrack.

LAST-MINUTE STRATEGY PAYS OFF FOR PRO STOCK’S HARTFORD

They were a sight at the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals Saturday afternoon at Norwalk, Ohio, NHRA Pro Stock team owner/driver Matt Hartford and his crew chief, Eddie Guarnaccia.

The clock was ticking toward the second and final qualifying session of the weekend. Rain showers had wiped out both scheduled chances Friday at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park, so the pressure was on from the outset. Hartford was third in the provisional lineup, but he said he hadn’t been happy with his driving earlier in the day: “We should’ve been No. 1 after Q1, but it was driver error.”

So the two of them were debating how to use their last pass down the track before Sunday’s eliminations.

The latest Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge of the season saw back-to-back Funny Car world champion Ron Capps win the specialty race for the second time this season. Justin Ashley, Deric Kramer, and Angie Smith also claimed victory making for a thrilling day of action at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals.
