The opening round of Pro Modified at the Denso NHRA U.S. Nationals was chock full of excitement but for all the wrong reasons. Kris Thorne and Steve Matusek crashed their vehicles with both drivers exiting banged up race cars but had no injuries.
Thorne had beaten No. 1 qualifier Jason Scruggs, using a .006 reaction time and 5.768-second elapsed time to pad his lead over the quicker Scruggs. And it was a fortunate set of circumstances for Scruggs as Thorne crossed over in front of Scruggs and impacted the wall head-on.

Top Alcohol Dragster standout Megan Meyer was confident in her decision. The second-generation drag racer, who secured the 2019 NHRA series championship, knew now was the right time to step away from the sport for what she considers an even more significant opportunity.
"I'm getting married in October and we want to start a family as soon as possible after that," Meyer explained. "With the fact that I'm a female, I can't drive and be pregnant at the same time. So something's got to give. I'm very satisfied with how my career has been. I've been doing this for five full years and pretty much reached every milestone that I've wanted to reach. So for me, it's a good time to step away."
No, Meyer doesn't lament the fact she never made her way into Top Fuel.

There are fewer things better than reacquainting with a longtime friend. If the old friend brings along sponsorship, that's the icing on the cake.
This scenario is precisely what happened this weekend for Pro Modified racer Steve Matusek when he and Fran Vivenzio got together for the Denso NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis.
Matusek qualified No. 9 in the 16-car Pro Modified field with his turbocharged Mustang sporting sponsorship from Tequila Comisario, a premium tequila brand. Tequila Comisario is part of the Elite Beverage International group.

For much of Saturday in Indianapolis, the talk of the pit area revolved around the Don Schumacher Racing trio of Ron Capps, Matt Hagan and Jack Beckman.
As it turns out, however, DSR has four drivers.
