PROJECT WHITE WAGON: LATEST INSTALLMENT

02_27_2009_wagonThe more the Project White Wagon becomes a topic of conversation the more skeletons fall out of the closet. It appears to us that there was a lot more to this lady than met the eye.

There are rumors the car pushed the rule book’s gray areas to the limits, including speculation the car had the front and rear axles moved forward like an FX car, a claim that Fulton chuckles over.

PRO MOD ALL-TIME TOP 20 DRIVERS - NO. 6 BILL KUHLMANN

pm_logoAttitude’s CompetitionPlus.com, through the assistance of a key group of Pro Modified historians and enthusiasts, has compiled a list of the Top 20 all-time drivers based on their contribution to the class, historic achievements, statistics and fan appeal.

Starting on Friday, January 8, 2010, the electronic magazine began revealing those names on the list, and will announce two drivers per week, until the No. 1 driver is unveiled on Saturday, Mar. 20, during the ADRL Dragpalooza in Houston, Texas.

Attitude’s CompetitionPlus.com narrowed the list from hundreds of drivers down to 20. Today, we reveal No. 6 on the list.

TJ SR.: THE DRAG RACER WHO BEAT CANCER AND LIVED TO WRITE ABOUT IT

COVER_OF_BOOKTommy Johnson Sr. remembered the day he sat in his truck, paralyzed with the news delivered just an hour earlier. Never in a million years would Johnson, then a competitive player in the mail order parts business, have ever believed his cancerous death sentence would one day lead to his greatest triumph and serve as the inspiration to author a book written about the experience.

Johnson’s book, titled simply CANCER: The True Story of How I Survived Absolute Terminal Cancer, recently hit the marketplace and while the self-published book doesn’t share the same glossy look as those on Amazon.com, he believes the message inside is more than enough to make the average person do a double-take at their everyday life. A strong message of survival is the key selling point.

“If I can save just one life, then the last ten years in making this book a reality has been worth it,” said Johnson, father of current nitro racer Tommy Johnson Jr. “I want everyone who buys the book to pass it on to someone else.”

LARRY MORGAN: TIME TO MAKE PRO STOCK FAIR FOR EVERYONE

cbs_2322_20100120_1038034934Larry Morgan believes the Pro Stock class should be fair to every competitor. After last weekend’s ill fated, and incomplete NHRA Arizona Nationals, the line between fair and unfair was made crystal clear.

Morgan blames a few of the leading crew chiefs in the class for bending the ear of the NHRA in terms of track preparation and other issues. In the end, he believes this has become a detriment to the class.

“You have these guys that believe they are so ahead of the time, and they sit back every session, at the back of the pack and they want natural rubber from the burnouts and don’t want [NHRA] to drag the track and do what it takes to give everyone a fair chance,” said Morgan, who has qualified in both events this season. “The first few pairs of cars out don’t benefit from a sprayed and dragged [with rubber] track.”

DECEGLIE: THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE TRACK

Anyone who has ever driven in severe winters conditions knows exactly how Vinnie Deceglie felt the split second his car got out of control during a qualifying run at Firebird International Raceway during the NHRA Arizona Nationals.

“It was like having black ice out there,” said Deceglie on the Friday after the destruction of his 2010 Dodge Avenger. “The car is a just about basically totaled.

“If it has given me a slight, slight indication it was going to do anything like that I would have clutched it or pulled the parachutes on it. I've driven cars faster than a pro stock car and been way out of shape, much more than I was in that run, and this car just flipped. The video tells you the car went .975 to the 60 foot. I was two thousandths, or four thousandths, of Mike Edward's run to the 660 mark.

NHRA LODRS DIV. 7 FIREBIRD EVENT CANCELLED

The completion of Lucas Oil Sportsman racing from the rain-delayed NHRA Arizona Nationals as well as the track's Division 7 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Firebird Int’l Raceway have been cancelled. Both will be rescheduled. An announcement will be made next week concerning new date or dates and venue or venues for completion of the activities.

According to officials, the manufacturer of the traction compound had supplied a pallet of products that contained a compound that was not suitable for drag racing purposes. NHRA and Firebird officials worked feverishly to correct the issues and despite their best efforts were not able to overcome the conditions.

KURT BUSCH DECISION COMES DOWN TO THE WIRE

Wednesday is D-Day for Kurt Busch and his hopes to drag race at the NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla. He's hoping to race his classic turbocharged Mopar in the Super Gas division.

"The car is so close to not being finished," said Busch after winning the pole for the Shelby American 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

"If I can't get the test in, I don't want to go out there and embarass myself."

If Busch gets the test in and all goes well, an announcement will be made next Saturday on Busch's plans to race the car.

THREE SEATS LEFT IN MICKEY THOMPSON’S 3-SECOND CLUB

The Mickey Thompson Three-Second Club was introduced in February 2009 as a very special program to reward and recognize American Drag Racing League (ADRL) Extreme 10.5 Class racers who are able to achieve elapsed times in the three-second range.

Chuck Ulsch posted a record-breaking 3.98-second elapsed time back in August along with Spiro Pappas who posted a 3.99-second elapsed time, both on the new Mickey Thompson Pro-5 double bead lock wheels and ET Drag #3169W tires. Both racers are consistently found in the winner’s circle in the Extreme 10.5 Class, and were officially inducted into the Mickey Thompson Three-Second Club during the ADRL World Finals “Battle for the Belts” in a special ceremony.
