COUGHLIN FACING STIFF 2009 CHALLENGE

When Jeg Coughlin surveys the Pro Stock landscape in 2009, he sees several improved teams and coughlin2.jpgan increased level of competition overall.

That just makes the two-time defending NHRA Pro Stock world champ
hungrier to secure his third consecutive NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing
Series crown. It is a feat that only three drivers have been able to
accomplish in the history of the 200-mph category: Bob Glidden, the
late Lee Shepherd and Greg Anderson.

However, Coughlin knows that in order to join that elite group of
drivers in the NHRA record books, he’s going to have his work cut out
for him. He understands the quickest way to win a championship is to
win a bunch of races.

AJ HAND DELIVERS TROPHY

After Alan Johnson Al-Anabi Racing Top Fuel driver Larry Dixon won the 40th annual AC Delco NHRA a_johnson.jpgGatornationals
in Gainesville, Fla. on March 15, team owner Alan Johnson traveled to
Doha, Qatar to deliver the race-winner’s trophy.

The trip was planned before the team won at Gainesville, but with
Dixon’s Top Fuel win, the trip became the perfect opportunity to
deliver to trophy to team partner Sheikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Thani.
Johnson returned to the United States late Saturday night.

“It was cool to be able to give him the trophy in person,” Johnson
said.  “He came to the hotel the first night we were there, and we gave
him the trophy; it was great!  He was definitely excited that we won a
race in our third attempt because he knows how this sport works.
Starting a team is one thing, but being competitive is completely
different.  We knew we could do it, but we didn’t know how long it
might take.”

Top Fuel driver Del Cox hopes that statement one day rings true.

Following an almost identical path to the Top Fuel ranks as good friend
Spencer Massey, Cox takes over the same Mitch King backed dragaster
that Massey drove to four victories and an IHRA Top Fuel World
Championship in his rookie season just last year.

Now Cox hopes it is his turn in the spotlight.

ENCORE SUNDAY: LEGEND OF LEE SHEPHERD

1-11-07-lee.jpgFew drivers make an impact on drag racing like a soft-spoken, determined
individual named Lee Shepherd of Arlington,
Texas did. When teamed with the
formidable duo of fellow Texans David Reher and the late Buddy Morrison,
Shepherd became a dominant force in a short span of time. His talent behind the
wheel, combined with a non-confrontational personality and a sincere dedication
to the Chevrolet brand, soon earned Shepherd the admiration of race fans young
and old. He gained a huge amount of respect from fellow racers as well.

It's pretty safe to say that many
teams underestimated the triumvirate from the Lone Star State, which formed under unusual
circumstances. Shepherd first joined Reher-Morrison through necessity, and the
relationship blossomed from there. The talented driver headed up a team that
had developed a reputation in Division 4, and when Shepherd blew the engine in
his ride and Reher and Morrison found themselves with an engine and no car, the
forces morphed into one. They found success with a few national event wins, and
in 1976 they made the huge leap into Pro Stock. The foundation had actually
been laid many years before, however.
