Names like Gary Scelzi and Ron Capps immediately conjure up
images of the lightning-quick, tire smoking, high-octane world of NHRA Drag
Racing. 

That thought is about to make a few successive left-hand,
dirt-slinging turns.

This Thursday, May 1, at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach,
Illinois, Scelzi (who drives the Mopar/Oakley Dodge in NHRA) and Capps (driver
of the NAPA Auto Parts Dodge in NHRA), along with several other NHRA drivers
will be trading their straight track mentality for a more circular style of
thinking when they strap themselves in for some Crate Late Model action. 
For the first time ever, at least eight drag strip veterans will tackle the
third-mile clay at Tri-City in the inaugural NHRA on Dirt event. 
Scheduled to join Scelzi and Capps will be Cruz Pedregon, Allen Johnson, Doug
Kalitta, Dave Grubnic, Antron Brown and Allen Bradshaw.

NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Car racers will soon head to Summit Motorsports Park at Norwalk, Ohio,
for a chance to win $50,000 at the 2008 K&N Horsepower Challenge
Race.  Racers are not the only ones that can win.  You can enter the

Eight K&N

As a youngster in 1976, Tommy Johnson, Jr. stood in victory circle in
St. Louis with his dad who was celebrating a sportsman Modified
eliminator win.  That was at St. Louis International Raceway, the strip
that has been renovated into the existing Gateway International Raceway.

Now a veteran driver and pilot of the Kenny Bernstein-owned Monster
Energy Funny Car, Tommy Johnson, Jr. is looking to deliver a national
event win at the O’Reilly Midwest Nationals May 2-4 and cause for
another family celebration.

“That was the only national event win my dad ever had,” said Johnson.  “So I have very special memories of St. Louis.

“Additionally, St. Louis is close to Indy, where I live, so it almost
feels like a hometown race.  St. Louis is also Budweiser’s home and the
brand has a long history with Kenny Bernstein.  We’re looking forward
to representing Kenny.  I know we’ll have a lot of folks out there
watching us.

A name familiar to many will be entering his first year of Pro Modified Racing Association competition this season.
 
Al Hinds is coming out of retirement to race in the PMRA tour. One of
Pro Modified’s earliest contestants, the Waterloo, Ontario racer plans
to return to the class with his 2004 Corvette.
 
“I’m excited. This is going to be awesome,” said Hinds, who raced in the class starting in 1996.

Paul Athey’s team had a good first outing of the year at Virginia Motorsports Park
this past weekend. The team finished qualifying in the Nitro Coupe class at the
Super Chevy show in the number 2 position on the strength of an eighth-mile run
of 4.077. Athey’s run put him just behind Tommy Gray’s 4.04 run. As is
tradition for Paul, the 4.077 run was preceded by a near eighth-mile burnout.

“To start the year off by qualifying strong is a great start
to this season for us. We didn’t get a chance to really test before this race,
but we did get to test all day on Friday”, said Paul from his pits after the
race. “We had some issues with some of the electronics on the car, so we took
them all off for Saturday’s qualifying and went back to the basics. The car
liked it.”

NHRA Pro Stock racer Tom Hammonds spent many hours at Atlanta Dragway during his collegiate basketball days at Georgia Tech.

“I used to come to the Southern Nationals when I was in college every
year,” Hammonds said. “This has always been one of the fun times of the
year for me.  Usually when basketball season was over and I had a
chance to kind of relax and unwind, this is one of the things I loved
doing.  I always enjoyed watching Pro Stock cars run.”

It was almost like magic.
Frank Gugliotta, a close friend of Justin Humphreys and his parents,
accompanied their RaceRedi Motorsports Pro Stock team to Commerce, Ga., to provide chassis
tuning advice in the NHRA national event.

He did, and the Pontiac
GXP responded better than it ever had. 
Humphreys turned in four solid qualifying runs at Atlanta Dragway and
qualified third.  And then he tacked on
three more good runs during Sunday’s eliminations en route to a semifinal
finish – his best outing of the season.  
He was so pleased that a minus .003-second red-light start in the semifinals
against Jason Line didn’t alter his mood.

Throttle Energy drink announced plans to take over the primary
sponsorship of the NHRA Drag Racing Series on Friday at the NHRA
Southern Nationals in Commerce, Ga.

Rafael Acevedo, senior brand manager for Energy Drinks, Coca-Cola North
America, opened the press conference with the catchphrase, “Go Full
Throttle or Go Home.”

Last week the first victim got sent home. Vis Viva, an existing advertiser in the
official event program, was sent packing with the notice their full page
ads could no longer be accepted.

Dan Pikarsky, Vice President of Attitude Energy Drinks, said the agency who publishes the program called him early in the
year and he bought into the program well before the change in
sponsorship.
