IKE MAIER GUNNING FOR PMRA TITLE

1_2007_09_01_043.jpgWhile he has been around fast machines most of his life, Ike Maier has only
raced for a handful of years.

“I guess you could say I’m a bit of a
thrill-seeker,” said Maier, who finished fourth in the Pro Modified Racing
Association (PMRA) in 2007, his rookie year. “About four years ago I went to the
track, saw the Pro Modifieds, and said ‘that’s what I want to do’.”

So after running in the OSCA Outlaw
Street class in 2006, Maier stepped up his racing endeavors, and now owns and
drives the Maier Motorsports 1969 Chevy Camaro-bodied Pro Modified. His
competition background includes motocross motorcycles and powerboat racing, but
he said driving one of the world’s fastest door slammers has taken him to a new
level of speed and acceleration.

Powered by an Atchison-prepared Alan Johnson
526-cubic inch blown engine in a G-Force Race Cars chassis, Maier continues to
get more comfortable and quicker passes each time he goes down the
track.

LUCAS/TODD BOBSLED UPDATE

M_Lucas.jpgMorgan Lucas, the pilot of the powerful NHRA Lucas Oil Top Fuel
dragster, rallied in qualifying for the third annual Chevy Bodine
Bobsled Challenge presented by Whelen in taking the No. 2 qualifying
position with a total time of 1:48.25 (54.29 -53.96 seconds) just
barely behind perennial favorite, Boris Said by just a scant time of
.23-hundredths of a second.  Said paced the field with a quick run down
the mountain of 1:48.02.

“The qualifying runs went pretty well today with the exception of one
area of the track I had to fight,” said Lucas.  “I’m hoping they are
going to work on the sled tonight, but it’s still competitive by all
means.  Once I get turn 14 of the track figured out I will be a lot
better off.  When you come out of that section you have to keep the
sled low, but at the same time you want to keep it off the inner wall.
The problem I’m having right now is my sled wants to go too much to the
left in the chicane and it’s really hard to make go where I want.  It
slows you down a lot and breaks your momentum.”

It will be a busy race day for Lucas and his drag racing teammate, J.R.
Todd, the driver of the Torco Race Fuels/Seelye Wright Top Fuel railer,
who had a harrowing experience during his morning practice runs.

instrumentation, tachometers, and gauges, and we’re very happy to have them on
board once again.”

Auto Meter offers its customers the most extensive line of technologically
advanced, competition-inspired, and race-proven instruments of any aftermarket
automotive instrument supplier in the world today.

NEW ADDITION TO PARK'S MUSEUM

A new, limited-edition 1/16th-scale ceramic sculpture of the famed Hirohata
Merc built by Sam and George Barris for Bob Hirohata in 1952 is the latest
addition to the growing catalog of exclusive memorabilia from the Wally Parks
NHRA Motorsports Museum, presented by the Automobile Club of Southern
California.

Barris, the iconic auto designer dubbed "The King of the
Kustomizers," crafted the legendary Hirohata Merc from a brand-new 1951 Mercury
sedan that was heavily modified prior to the '52 Motorama custom car show in Los
Angeles.

Based on dimensions, photographs and details taken from the
original car while it was on display at the Parks Museum, the creation by
renowned sculptor Joel Dunford of Carllectibles is "striking in both its styling
and attention to detail," according to Tony Thacker, executive director of the
Parks Museum.

ENCORE: THE WILD BUNCH – BORN TO BE WILD

12-10-07wildbunch.jpgThe mere notion of anchoring supercharged, alcohol burning engines within the confines of a full-bodied doorslammer was a practice described as volatile, but that didn’t stop a dedicated group of thrill-seekers from pursuing the rush. Their self-appointed name, the Wild Bunch, was an accurate description of the image they conveyed. How else could you explain a group that would dare bolt a blown, alcohol burning motor into a Chevy Luv Truck, a Nissan 300 ZX or if those weren’t radical enough, a Jeep CJ-5?

What started out as a group of guys choosing to be different in bracket racing, quickly evolved into a lucrative match race circuit and the inspiration for the Top Doorslammer class in Australia. Their finest hour resulted in the first six-second doorslammer pass in drag racing history.

Their unpredictable nature made them an immediate hit for the fans in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States as well as the rest of the country. Not only that, their antics also brought forth heaping amounts of publicity within the various drag racing magazines.

KORETSKY NOT DONE

Kenny Koretsky's Motorsports Director Doug Davenport called Torco's
CompetitionPlus.com because he wanted to let our readers know that
rumors floating around suggesting that Koretsky has sold the team and
quitting are exactly that -- rumors.

"How are we quitting if we
are moving ahead 110%?" Davenport asked. "We've got all kinds of new
engines and cars coming, so rest assured we'll be racing this season."
