One
of Canada’s first Pro Modified competitors is returning to racing, and
will make his return at this weekend’s Victoria Day Weekend PMRA
Challenge at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario May 19 and 20.
 
After taking a couple of years off, Gary Irving of Bolton, ON will be back in action with his 1937 Chevy Coupe Pro Modified.
 
“I’m looking forward to getting back in the car,” said Irving, who
began to race in the popular class back in 1991. “It’s been a couple of
years since I raced, but we’ll be ready for this weekend.”
 

ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD will have same-day coverage of both qualifying and
eliminations for the rescheduled NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event at
Bristol (Tenn.) Dragway, July 6-8.

Qualifying for the O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals presented by
Q will be televised from 4-6 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 7, with final
eliminations on the air from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, July 8. NHRA Race Day
will air at 11 a.m. on July 8 to set the stage for that day's eliminations. 

Fridays
are what veteran chassis builder Tommy Mauney considers to be his “fill in the
blanks” days. Mostly he prefers to tinker with his custom motorcycles, a
diversion he felt would one day remove him from the rigors of building race
cars. This comes after he finishes up the final touches on customer orders and orders parts.

Mauney
is quick to point out that he still loves building award-winning race cars.
It’s the politics he could do without.

It’s
not the money that drives him, although it does go a long way towards paying
the bills. It is the love of his craft that pushes him to never give up.

“We
still have plenty to do,” Mauney said, referring to his ever-growing chassis
demands. “You have those people who have a preference for our cars and because
of that, it keeps us plenty busy throughout the year.”

Kalitta Motorsports, founded in 1959 by drag racing legend Connie “the Bounty
Hunter” Kalitta and one of the most successful auto racing teams in history,
announced personnel changes today to help solidify their standing among the
elite teams competing in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series highlighted by the
reassignment of longtime Team Kalitta wrench man and co-crew chief Jon
Oberhofer.

Effective immediately, Oberhofer, a 38-year old resident of Ypsilanti, will
take over the reigns as crew chief of the 8,000-horsepower Mac Tools Top Fuel
dragster driven by veteran Top Fuel ace and three-time POWERade points runner-up
(2003, ‘04, and ‘06) Doug Kalitta. Oberhofer has relinquished his duties as
co-crew chief of the Zantrex-3 Top Fuel dragster driven by Dave Grubnic. Connie
will retain his title as crew chief on the Zantrex-3 entry.

Dave Danish, general manager of Southwestern Int'l Raceway, an NHRA
Division 7 track in Tucson, Ariz., died May 15, four days
after suffering a major heart attack. At the direction of family members,
doctors at San
Antonio Community Hospital in
Upland, Calif., removed Danish from life-support
systems in the afternoon, and he succumbed peacefully a few hours later. He was
61.

With the rescheduling of the O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at
Bristol Dragway to July 6-8, points accumulation for the 2007 NHRA King
Demon Crown bonus event for Pro Stock drivers has been shortened to 22
events. The O'Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka,
June 1-3, is the last event where drivers can earn points for the
prestigious event.

His dad is a six-time series champion and 50-race winner, doing so by keeping
all four of his Top Fuel dragster’s wheels on the asphalt.  Dalton Millican,
meanwhile, is more content flying through the air and sliding around dirt
corners on his 4-wheeler.
 
The son of IHRA champion and current NHRA
competitor Clay Millican and wife Donna, Dalton must’ve inherited his father's
competitive genes because he’s placed third and second, respectively, in his
first two All Terrain Vehicle Association (ATVA) motocross events. 

 
“He’s not done too badly,” said Clay.  “I thought he did really well
with the third in his first national event. Then last weekend, in the debut with
his new sponsors – Knoll-Gas Motorsports and Lonestar Racing – he ran in two
classes at Red Bud (near Buchanan, Mich.), and finished second in Production C
class and third in Open C Unlimited. 

Torco Nitro Funny Car pilot and reigning Knoll-Gas Nitro Jam World
Champion, Dale Creasy Jr., has pledged $100 for each round he wins to
the Wish Upon A Star Foundation during the 2007 Knoll-Gas Nitro Jam
racing season. Creasy has been a longtime supporter of the Joliet, Ill.
charity that grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses.

"Dale has been supporting Wish Upon A Star for seven years," said Don
West, Executive Director. "Dale is always willing to give his time and
energy to help out with our fundraising events. Now we can cheer even
more for him because each time he races and wins it helps kids."

Dale Creasy sees the opportunity as extra motivation for his Creasy
Family Motorsports team. "It helps to know that every time we win a
round during eliminations we will be helping a sick child get their
special wish," Creasy said. "Don and all the folks at the Wish Upon A
Star Foundation do such a great job. It's really a pleasure to work
with them on this project."
