THURSDAY ACTION: GETTING READY FOR THE REAL ACTION

DSA_0253
Coby Rabon from Ridgeway, SC dominated both elapsed time and speed of the Pro Street Shootout at the Street Car Super Nationals in Las Vegas during the popular test and tune session. The unique shootout awards $500.00 each to the best E.T. and best MPH in the Pro Street category. Rabon in his 2005 Ford Mustang Proline 670ci BBC / Twin Turbo ran 6.001 at 242.02. Rabon earlier posted a 6.01 at 244 mph to establish career bests.

Driving experience played a major role in keeping Pat Musi's new Dodge Stratus off of the guard wall. The car lost traction and shook the tires.

MUSI HEADED TO VEGAS LOADED FOR BEAR

musiPat Musi is going to this weekend’s Pacific Street Car Association Street Car Super Nationals in Las Vegas with enough determination to sink a battleship. The Pro Street drag racing icon has a few tricks up his sleeve, even to the point the competition will see him as a lesser man, literally.

Musi has lost 42 pounds over the course of the last few months and that combination paired with a brand new lightweight Jerry Bickel-built Dodge Stratus powered by a 903-inch, EFI-equipped engine has him brimming with excitement.

“I plan to be 198 by the time I get to Vegas,” said Musi, who was already down to 201. “No one can believe it. They think I’m smoking crack or something.”

But for Musi, re-establishing his role as the Pro Street front-runner calls for this level of dedication, and he’s more than willing to put forth the effort.

“We had to add 175 pounds to make weight for the 2,500 weight minimum,” Musi explained. “The car weighs, with me in it, 2,325 pounds.”

And for Musi, he’s counting every calorie this Mopar takes in, even in the engine. The 903-incher weighs 636 pounds with fluids and starter.

“We’ve been working on this engine for over a year and now it’s time for it to deliver,” Musi said. “I am doing everything in my power to provide the best opportunity for it to succeed.”

Musi believes he’s got a combination capable of running with the supercharged and turbo entries and that’s what largely fuels his passion.

“Mel has probably done the most of any of the promoters to get enough weight off of the nitrous cars to make us competitive,” Musi said, referring to event organizer Mel Roth. “I don’t give a s*** who is in the other lane, there are going to get something.”

The potent punch, Musi says, is only one of the surprises he has in store for the competition. He admits another surprise is coming but he’s going to let them find that one out on their own.

Musi isn’t coming to this battle alone. He’s bringing a score of customers and friends including Vinny Demieri, Joe Dunne and Tim Henry. Originally there were supposed to be four cars racing in the group but Hector Estrada couldn’t make the trip to Las Vegas due to family commitments.

NMCA CHAMPION TROY COUGHLIN HEADED TO SCSN

TROY_0912-01027A month after capturing the world title in the National Muscle Car Association, Pro Street driver Troy Coughlin is ready to race for big bucks and bragging rights at this weekend's Street Car Super Nationals V presented by Chassisworks at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Coughlin will face more than 40 of the top drivers in the world in a classic East vs. West Shootout behind the wheel of his championship-winning JEGS.com Pontiac GXP. His racecar should be quick, as it won this year's NMCA national events in Chicago and Charlotte and recently reset the NMCA class record to 6.277 seconds at 225.08 mph.

"We tested in Vegas a few weeks back and the car ran very well," Coughlin said. "I think we'll be a contender, although looking at the entry list I can see there's going to be a very talented group of race teams out there so we'll have our work cut out for us.

"I'm just excited to get back behind the wheel again. We've had a few weeks to enjoy our NMCA championship and now it's time to get back in the car and race."

More than three dozen drivers have pre-entered for the event, including defending race champion Kirk Wilmes, last year's runner-up Vinny DeMieri, and IHRA frontrunners Dean and Cary Goforth. Hughes Performance has posted a cash prize of $20,000 for the event winner with up to $35,000 in contingency money also up for grabs.

"We'll find out how we stack up," Coughlin said. "The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is one of the premiere racetracks in the country. I always enjoy racing there because the people at the track take great pride in having the nicest facility in the country. Plus, we're in Las Vegas, and that city is always exciting."

In addition to Pro Street, the Street Car Super Nationals will feature action in 10 other categories, including Outlaw 10.5, X-Treme Drag Radial/TT-5, Wild Street, Hot Street, Limited Street, Mustang Maddness, Open Comp, Double Index 9.60/10.60, Super Index 7.60/8.60, and Bracket 1.

Testing begins Thursday afternoon with the Pro Street Quickest Pass Challenge scheduled for at 8 p.m. Thursday night. Four rounds of Pro Street qualifying will be run at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday with sudden-death eliminations slated to start at 10 a.m. Sunday.

There also will be an extensive car show and manufacturer's midway. Tickets are available for $25 per day or $60 for the entire four-day race. Children 6-12 cost $8 per day or $20 for the weekend. Children 5 and under are free. Visit www.streetcarsupernationals.com for more information.
