FRIDAY BATLLE FOR THE BELTS

VON SMITH, RICKIE SMITH AMONG ‘BATTLE FOR THE BELTS’ WINNERS - Veteran Von Smith used a .047 starting line advantage to make his slower 3.616 a winner over Tommy D’Aprile’s 3.596 Friday in the featured Pro Extreme final in the ADRL’s Battle for the Belts all-star race at Steve Earwood’s Rockingham Dragway.

Smith, driving a supercharged 1969 Chevrolet Camaro for Al-Anabi Racing and Sheikh Khalid al-Thani of Qatar, claimed one of three $50,000 winner’s checks.  The other $50,000 winners were Pat Stoken of Eureka, Montana, who won in Pro Nitrous, and Scott Hintz of Odessa, Texas, who prevailed in Extreme Pro Stock.

Among Friday’s $20,000 winners was Rickie Smith, the veteran from King, N.C., who drove his IDG Chevrolet Camaro past the Pontiac Firebird of Kevin Rivenbark of Wallace, N.C.  

Dave Norris of Bryans Road, Md., a regular player in the MIRock Superbike Series co-hosted by Rockingham and Maryland Intenational Raceway, was the upset winner in Pro Extreme Motorcycle where he got past world champion Eric McKinney of Hammersville, Ohio for a $20,000 victory.

Finally, after being upset in the Pro Nitrous class in which he was the No. 1 seed, Stevie Jackson of Martinez, Ga., rallied to win the $20,000 top prize in Pro Drag Radial. 

Rickie Smith, runner-up last week at the NHRA’s Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis, Ind., hadn’t won a major race on his home track since 1988.  He ended that drought in a final round pedal-fest after both cars lost traction.

Friday’s racing, which featured the eight best drivers from each ADRL category, kicked off a weekend of racing that continues Saturday with pro qualifying at 1 p.m., 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. for Sunday’s regular ADRL tour event, Dragstock X.

General admission spectator tickets are free but a limited number of reserved seats are available for a fee including some in the operations tower.  Parking is $20 per vehicle.
