EVENT FINAL - ADRL Dragstock V Attracts Capacity Crowd

ADRL_Dragstock_crowd.jpg

A capacity crowd estimated at up to 30,000 witnessed the stars of the American Drag Racing League (ADRL) go after a $100,000 purse Sep. 13, in the ADRL’s Dragstock V at Rockingham Dragway.

Scruggs_Stanton.jpg
Current ADRL Pro Extreme world champion Jason Scruggs (left) and 2006 class champ and eventual Dragstock V winner Bubba Stanton paired up in round two of qualifying at Rockingham Dragway. The owners of the two race teams were each offered a bounty of $10,000 if their cars posted side-by-side, 200-plus-mph passes. They came up just a little short, though, with Scruggs going 3.86 at 199.40 in his 2007 Dodge Stratus, while Stanton and his 1963 Corvette earned the pole position with his pass of 3.81 seconds at 197.33 mph.

Former Pro Extreme class champion Bubba Stanton of Potts Camp, MS, steered his supercharged 1963 Corvette to a final-round, 3.81-second pass at 197.02 miles per hour over the Rockingham eighth mile to beat Semora, NC’s Chip King. Reigning class champ Jason Scruggs lost in the semi-finals, but not before thrilling the fans with a pair of 200-plus mph passes in the preliminary rounds.

Puerto Rico’s Raymond Matos recently purchased the 1970 Cuda of current Pro Nitrous championship contender Dennis Radford and picked up the event win with it in his career-first ADRL start after going 4.03 at 183.22 mph against Andy Jensen of Nescopeck, PA. Jensen earlier set a new ADRL elapsed time record of 3.87 seconds with his turbocharged 1968 Camaro.

In the Extreme 10.5 class, named for the relatively narrow 10.5-inch slicks the cars race on, second-generation racer Billy Glidden won for the third time this year. Glidden, from Whiteland, IN, also established a new E.T. record with his 4.14-second final-round win at 174.12 mph over Darrin Hoyle and his 2006 Cobalt from Taylorsville, NC.

Ron Procopio, from Wake Forest, NC, won his second Pro Extreme Motorcycle event of the season over Broxton, GA’s Carlos Wilkerson. Both riders covered the 660-foot distance in 4.28 seconds, but Procopio’s 165.90-mph ride reached the finish line eighth-thousandths of a second ahead of Wilkerson.

In a special-event Extreme Pro Stock race, Holdenville, OK’s Cary Goforth took the final-round win with a 4.12 pass at 175.50 mph in his 2008 Cobalt against Jeff Dobbins and his 2006 Escort from Wilmington, NC.

The ADRL returns to action Oct. 24-25, with its season-ending Battle for the Belts world championship playoffs at the Texas Motorplex, in Dallas.

IT'S A SUCCESS, AGAIN!

As evidenced by these pictures the ADRL Dragstock event was a rousing success, not affected in the least by the inaugural NHRA Carolinas Nationals less than 100 miles down the round in Concord, N.C.

CRASH OF A LEGEND - R.E.SMITH UNINJURED IN CRASH OF FORMER CANNON STUDEBAKER

smith_crash.JPG

In the second pair out in Pro Extreme, R.E. Smith walked away uninjured from a scary incident.

smith_crash2.JPGSmith encountered severe tire shake at the hit and made a hard move to the right just past the 60' cones. The car was up on two wheels and shot straight across the track, head on into the right hand wall. Fortunately it was not a high rate of speed, and R.E. got out of the car under his own power.

If the classic Studebaker looks familiar, it's the same Murray Anderson-built machine made famous by six-time Pro Modified champion Scotty Cannon.

FRIDAY QUALIFYING - White Runs Record E.T. in Early Dragstock Qualifying

White_Scion.jpg
The Team Titan Scion carries only a single-turboed 183 c.i. engine, but Gary White drove it to the provisional number-one position after one round of qualifying for the ADRL’s Hushpower Dragstock V at Rockingham Dragway.
Gary White of New Market, Florida, made the first-ever Extreme 10.5 (XTF) pass in the “teens” this afternoon when he posted an unofficial 4.15-seconds lap over the Rockingham (NC) Dragway eighth mile during testing for the American Drag Racing League’s (ADRL’s) Hushpower Dragstock V.

Proving it was no fluke, White drove his turbocharged Titan Motorsports 2007 Scion to the provisional number-one spot with a potentially record-setting 4.18-seconds pass at 173.32 mph in first-round qualifying. He needs to back the record time up within one percent this weekend to make it an official ADRL record.

halsey.JPG
Jim Halsey, from Street, Maryland, earned the provisional Pro Nitrous pole after one round of qualifying Sep. 12, for Hushpower Dragstock V, staged by the Flowmaster American Drag Racing League presented by the National Guard at Rockingham (NC) Dragway.
Later in the session, Billy Glidden and Steve Kirk Jr. made the quickest and fastest side-by-side XTF passes in history, as Glidden qualified second at 4.18 and 172.10 mph, while Kirk ran 4.19 at 177.42 to place third heading into two more qualifying rounds on Saturday, with eliminations to follow.

Potts Camp, Mississippi’s Bubba Stanton also looked strong in Pro Extreme practice with a 3.83 lap in Roger Henson’s “Widowmaker” ‘63 Corvette. He ran another 3.83-second pass at 197.36 mph in round-one qualifying to sit on top of the list heading into Saturday.

Reigning class champ Jason Scruggs placed second at 3.84 seconds and 195.73, with Bennie McDonald Jr. third after running a career-best 3.89 at 191.73 mph in his 1953 Corvette.

stanton.JPG
Potts Camp, Mississippi’s Bubba Stanton ran a 3.83-second pass at 197.36 mph in round-one qualifying to sit on top of the list heading into Saturday.
Pro Nitrous saw Street, Maryland’s Jim Halsey return to ADRL action after missing last month’s national event in Norwalk, Ohio, and he secured the provisional pole with a 3.94-seconds pass at 189.50 mph in his ’68 Camaro. Teammates Rickie Smith and Burton Auxier are currently runner-up and third going into the second qualifying session.

The ADRL’s two-wheeled class is currently led by Casey Stemper from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, who rode his 2008 Suzuki to a 4.25-second Pro Extreme Motorcycle lap at 168.68 mph.

Finally, Holdenville, Oklahoma, racer Dean Goforth went 4.12 at 174.93 mph with his 2007 GTO to lead the Extreme Pro Stock exhibition class, followed by Elijah Morton and Bert Jackson.

Saturday’s action includes two more qualifying sessions followed by eliminations for 16-car/bike fields in each class. Spectator gates open at 9 a.m. and qualifying resumes one hour later.

THURSDAY NOTEBOOK - ADRL'S DRAGSTOCK DELIVERS DIVERSITY

The largest collection of outlaw doorslammers and motorcycles ever assembled is expected this weekend (Sep. 12-13),

White&Kirk.jpg
The 2007 Scion of New Market, FL’s Gary White carries a turbocharged, 183-cubic-inch engine, while Steve Kirk Jr.’s 1963 Corvette from Monroe, GA, is motivated by a multi-stage, nitrous-injected, 800-plus cubic incher—yet both remain Hushpower Dragstock V title contenders in the ADRL’s hyper-competitive Extreme 10.5 class.
when the Flowmaster American Drag Racing League (ADRL) presented by the National Guard stages its oldest and most prestigious event of the year, Hushpower Dragstock V, at Rockingham Dragway.

Professional race teams from as far away as Oregon, California, Massachusetts, Florida and all points in between will vie for supremacy on the venerable Rockingham strip, along with a couple of Canadians and at least one crew from Puerto Rico. Cars will range from turbocharged, six-cylinder imports to front-wheel-drive domestics to 900-cubic-inch classics—with all capable of covering the eighth-mile distance in 3.7 to 4.5 seconds at speeds reaching over 200 miles per hour. There will also be wild, nitrous-fed motorcycles laying down 4.2-second passes at more than 170 mph—over just 660 feet from a standing start.

Dragstock V begins Friday with open testing and a single qualifying round for the ADRL’s all-pro show that includes Pro Extreme, Pro Nitrous and Extreme 10.5 cars, along with Pro Extreme Motorcycles. As a bonus, the second leg of the two-race Sonny’s Extreme Pro Stock Challenge presented by Purvis Ford also will practice and qualify, with Saturday’s schedule including two more qualifying sessions followed by eliminations in all five classes.

In addition to the race itself, Dragstock V also presents the final opportunity for ADRL drivers to earn points toward qualifying for the ADRL’s unique, championship-deciding Battle for the Belts competitions. The top eight points-earners in each class at the conclusion of Dragstock V will go head-to-head at the ADRL World Finals Oct. 24, in Ennis, Texas, to determine the ADRL’s four 2008 professional champions.

So far, only Pro Extreme points leader Joshua Hernandez and Pro Nitrous leader Billy Harper have mathematically clinched positions in their respective Battles for the Belts, so the final tallies are far from known. Even those drivers who are on the verge of clinching a spot will be racing for higher seeding in the points, thus gaining all-important lane choice once the Battle for the Belts begins.

The inaugural Dragstock in October 2004 was intended as a once-a-year event, but its success led directly to the creation of the ADRL, now the fastest-growing motorsports sanctioning body in the world. Since 2004, Dragstock has remained the ADRL's marquee event, hosting huge fields and drawing record crowds and record performances from its teams and drivers each year.

EVENT PREVIEW - ADRL Bringing Record-Breaking Event to Rockingham Dragway

When the Flowmaster American Drag Racing League (ADRL) presented by the National Guard visits Rockingham Dragway Sep.

Scruggs_Stratus.jpg
Mississippi’s Jason Scruggs and his father/crew chief Mitchell Scruggs (behind left rear fender) hope to reset the ADRL speed record with their new ’06 Dodge Stratus Sep. 12-13, at the ADRL’s Hushpower Dragstock V at Rockingham (NC) Dragway. (Photo courtesy ADRL Communications)
12-13, to stage its most historic event, Hushpower Dragstock V, expect records to fall.

Reigning ADRL Pro Extreme world champion Jason Scruggs stunned the drag racing world last year at “The Rock” when he made the first-ever 200-mph pass from a standing start over an eighth mile and lowered the official elapsed time record to an unreal 3.70 seconds—both feats that so far no other driver has come even close to matching.

“I really enjoy racing in the Carolinas and especially in Rockingham,” said Scruggs, who this season replaced the 1963 Corvette he drove at Dragstock IV with a 2006 Dodge Stratus. “We’re finally figuring out the new car and I think if conditions are good again this year we might be able to see 206 or 207 mph, but I think that .70 is going to be tough to beat.”

Certainly looking to join him in the 200-mph club will be current Pro Extreme points leader and defending Dragstock champion Joshua Hernandez, 2006 world champ Bubba Stanton and title contenders Travis Swearingen and Wes Johnston, among others.

“I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see any of those guys and maybe others go 200 at Rockingham,” ADRL President Kenny Nowling stated. “In fact, I will be surprised if we don’t see someone else run the number. It just seems like Rockingham and Dragstock really brings out the best in our racers.”

The Pro Nitrous contingent heads to Rockingham led by Shannon Jenkins, the only two-time Dragstock champion (2005, 2006) and winner of the ADRL’s most recent event last month in Norwalk, Ohio, where he also set a new speed record (192.91 mph) in the final round. Also hot in ’08 has been points leader Billy Harper, winner of three consecutive events earlier this season, and teammate Dennis Radford, who will debut a new 1970 Plymouth Duster at Dragstock V.

Extreme 10.5 leader Mike Hill has struggled a little at the last couple of events, but in returning to his more familiar southern climes, informed observers expect “The Hitman” to turn in a much-improved performance. Fellow Georgian Steve Kirk Jr. also should be a frontrunner, but it’s Indiana’s Billy Glidden who has been stealing all the headlines lately after winning two-straight races and lowering the class E.T. record to 4.22 seconds with his Ford-powered GTO. Also watch for Norwalk winner David Janes and defending series champ Steve Gorman, who at Dragstock V is debuting a new, bigger engine in his 2001 Grand Am.

Up on two wheels, 2007 Pro Extreme Motorcycle world champion Billy Vose will be looking to make it two in a row at Rockingham after winning in Norwalk and rookie Matt Prophit, who currently heads up the points list, will be anxious for his career-first win after coming up short in the past two finals. Prophit’s brother and teammate, Charlie Prophit also promises to be a Dragstock contender, as do Nikie Corley, Ron Procopio and Coodee Thomas, all race winners this year.

Rockingham Dragway owner Steve Earwood also is very pleased to be hosting the second leg of the two-race Sonny’s Extreme Pro Stock Challenge presented by Purvis Ford at Dragstock V. Robert Patrick won the first-ever Extreme Pro Stock race in July at Budds Creek, Maryland, and would love to double up in North Carolina, but drivers like Maryland runner-up Kelly Martin, number-one qualifier Frank Gugliotta, Pete Berner and John Montecalvo will all be looking to spoil Patrick’s plans.

“Adding the mountain-motor Pro Stocks, I don’t think the ADRL could have added anything more exciting for fans here in the Deep South,” said Earwood, a 36-year veteran of the sport. He also likes the ADRL’s unique marketing method of providing complimentary tickets to its events; all paid for by series sponsors Flowmaster and the National Guard.

“Dragstock has become one of our most important events,” he said. “Because of the ticket situation I’ve been able to go to our community colleges and give them tickets for all their alumni and staff, I’ve been able to go to local Chambers (of Commerce) and it’s such a great calling card to be able to walk in there with a stack of free tickets to this great event. It’s just helped us immeasurably. I just ask that everyone shows up hungry.”

The ADRL’s Hushpower Dragstock V gets underway Sep. 12, with practice for all five pro classes beginning at 1 p.m. and one round of qualifying scheduled for 6:30 p.m. On Saturday (Sep. 13), round two of qualifying is set for one hour after the gates open for spectators at 9 a.m. and a third and last qualifying session will start at 1 p.m. Eliminations will begin at 4:30 p.m., with the day’s racing expected to wrap up about 10 p.m., with a massive starting-line fan celebration of the winners to follow.
