Larry Morgan describes his days behind the wheel of an H/Altered Fiero as a “real interesting part of my life.”
Morgan is very proud of his days as a sportsman racer and even more proud of his Castrol GTX, Rod Shop Dodge association.
The Fiero, Morgan said, was the second chapter in his professional career that began with an opportunity to replace the legendary Dave Boertman behind the wheel of a Super Stock Pontiac Firebird.
“I remember coming home and telling my wife that I’ve got a chance to go professional drag racing as a sportsman with this car, and she said ‘you’re crazier than hell’ and I told her that I really did have a chance to do it so I was gonna do it,” Morgan recalled. “I made a deal and that year we ended up winning three out of nine races with that car.”
The magical first season evolved for Morgan to the point he was asked by Pontiac Motordports Manager John Calley to consider running one of the new Fieros with a four-cylinder engine.
“John Callie from Pontiac said, ‘Listen if you do this again I’ll be behind you 100% and I asked, what’s that mean”
Morgan said Callie made it clear, he would have carte blanche whatever he wanted.
“I know that was the kind of an opportunity, I had better take advantage of,” said Morgan. “It was a total development program. Bob Riffle worked with me out in the garage sometimes and he said he’d help me whatever I needed. We had rooms beside each other so I took on that deal and the first time I let the clutch out of it this thing did a wheel stand straight in the air. I’m telling you it was just a wild ride.”
The first run, Morgan said, was indicative of Morgan’s tenure with the Pontiac Fiero program.
“I had to work harder than anybody to make that deal work,” Morgan said.
