ANDERSON RUNS FIRST DENVER 6, JOHNSON NAILS QUICKEST

The momentous run came during the second Pro Stock qualifying session of the NHRA Mopar Mile High Nationals.

The feat had been accomplished during a prior test session but in order for a run to be considered official, it must be achieved during the confines of an organized national event.

Greg Anderson launches on Friday evening en route to the first "official" six second run at Bandimere Speedway located outside of Denver.
Greg Anderson became the first official NHRA Pro Stock driver to record a six-second elapsed time while racing in the 5,000-plus feet above sea level altitude of Bandimere Speedway located outside of Denver. The momentous run came during the second Pro Stock qualifying session of the NHRA Mopar Mile High Nationals.

The feat had been accomplished during a prior test session but in order for a run to be considered official, it must be achieved during the confines of an organized national event.

Anderson tripped the finish line timers in 6.993-seconds with a top speed of 196.73 mph to claim the coveted accomplishment.

“We certainly weren’t happy with our first run, but as things turned out, it put us in the second pair from the end and gave us the chance to become the first car in the sixes at Bandimere, and that’s neat,” said Anderson.  “That’s something they can never take away from us, and it’s cool to do it for everyone at Summit and our fans.  But the big picture is that we were three hundredths behind the fastest car, so we still have work to do.”

Bandimere's first side-by-side 6 came one pair after Anderson's monumental lap. Allen Johnson (left lane) laid down a new track record.
The quickest car in Denver belonged to the Mopar of Allen Johnson. Just as in the test session, he wasn’t the first to run a six-second pass but drove away as the quickest.

Johnson ran a 6.964 elapsed time at 197.10 mph.

“You know, we thought we could run a [6].95 or [6].96, and we got the 6.964. We feel fortunate to do it here where the Mopar folks are watching,” said Johnson. “To do it in front of them and show off a little bit in front of them and give them something to hold their chest out for, that’s what we’re all about.”

“We really want to come here and not just win the race, we want to qualify No. 1 and dominate,” Johnson continued. “I just love Denver, hanging out with the folks from Mopar. To come here and perform well in front of them is really fulfilling because that’s what we work for.”
