It took all of ten seconds for Tony Pedregon to say he wasn't saying anything past the statement

he had released to the NHRA concerning the departure of long-time crew chief Dickie Venables and assistant crew chief Kurt Elliott.

“Dickie and I sat down this past week to discuss the direction of our program and what would be the best long-term plan for the Quaker State Racing team,” said Pedregon, in a prepared statement for the NHRA. “We will miss Dickie, and we wish him well. He’s been a great asset and leaves us on the best of terms. We are currently evaluating potential crew-chief candidates and hope to name a new crew chief soon. In light of these circumstances, my focus will be on making a smooth transition and preparing for the Countdown to the Championship.”

Long time friend Bob Tasca believes if change was necessary on Pedregon's team that now was the perfect time to make the change. Pedregon is already locked into the Countdown to One and is the current leader in the point standings.

“Let me tell you something,” started Tasca. “Tony Pedregon is a two-time world champion and he has mowed down everybody out here. Certainly, he has things he is working through in his program. Truthfully, if he made a move this was the time to make it. He has three races to sort it.

“He will land on his feet.”

Pedregon was the fifth quickest with a 4.284 elapsed time at 278.58 miles per hour.

Tony Shortall is serving as car chief in the interim.
