NHRA Pro Stock driver and team owner Tom Hammonds continues to rack up awards from his previous career.

The All Sports Association Hall of Fame of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. inducted Hammonds into the Past Presidents Hall of Fame on Feb. 14.   

“We are excited to have Tom Hammonds join us today, and are honored to have him enshrined in the Hall of Fame,” said 2006-2007 All Sports President, Dennis Chavez.  “He is the top of the top, both professionally and personally.” 

Enshrined in the Hall of Fame, Hammonds joined past inductees, former Major League Baseball’s  Hall Famer and four time all-star Don Sutton, 1996 Heisman Trophy  winner  and NFL player Danny Wuerffel, and former NFL player E.G. Green

Enshrined in the Hall of Fame, Hammonds joined past inductees, former Major League Baseball’s  Hall Famer and four time all-star Don Sutton, 1996 Heisman Trophy  winner  and NFL player Danny Wuerffel, and former NFL player E.G. Green.

“It was wonderful to be inducted into the Hall of Fame for my professional accomplishments,” said Hammonds. “But, it is even more of an honor to be recognized by my hometown for my overall accomplishments.  I will always cherish this recognition.”

At a ceremony held at the Emerald Coast Conference Center on Okaloosa Island, Fla. a video message from Hammonds’ Georgia Tech coach, Bobby Cremins, preceded an introduction by his son, Tom Hammonds, IV, and induction in to the Hall of Fame.

Retired from the NBA after 12 years in the league, Hammonds has moved on to compete as a National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Pro Stock Car driver, making his pro racing debut in 1996.  Racing since the age of 16, he has won 15 Muscle Car Association events and reached the final round of three NHRA events.  Having sat out of racing competition for three years, the General Motors backed driver has returned for the 2007 season, with the NHRA PowerAde competition in Gainesville, Fla. slated to be his first race of the season.  

Drafted ninth overall in the 1989 NBA draft, Hammonds enjoyed his career with the  Washington (Bullets) Wizards, Denver Nuggets, and Minnesota Timberwolves.  Before his illustrious NBA career, he played college basketball at Georgia Tech, where his jersey was retired as the fourth all-time leading scorer in the school’s history.

Hammonds will return to drag racing competition in Gainesville.
