2012 NHRA ROUTE 66 NATS - EVENT RESULTS
SUNDAY - ENDERS MAKES NHRA HISTORY
Brown, Arend and Hines also earn victories at O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals near Chicago
Erica Enders made history Sunday at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by Super Start Batteries by becoming the first female to win an NHRA Pro Stock race.
Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Jeff Arend (Funny Car) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners at the rain-delayed NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event near Chicago.
Enders drove her GK Motorsports Chevy Cobalt to a final round winning performance of 6.627 seconds at 207.40 mph to hold off four-time world champion Greg Anderson, who trailed in the race in his Summit Racing Chevy Camaro with a 6.641 at 208.36.
Enders, one of only six females to ever compete in the 200-mph factory hot rod category, raced past Kurt Johnson, Vincent Nobile and V. Gaines in the first three rounds to advance to her seventh career final round. From there the 28-year-old Houston native led season points leader Anderson all the way down the track in the final round to finally get the victory she has been seeking since starting her Pro Stock career in 2005.
“It’s awesome,” said Enders, who becomes the 12th female to win an NHRA pro category race. “I think that if I could have planned it, I would have asked to run Greg in the final. You know that he made it very clear that he didn’t want to lose to me. He’s a very competitive guy and I love him to death, but I couldn’t wait to beat him. I’m glad [the win] came here in Chicago. I had my first final in Pro Stock here in 2005, and so it was nice to circle back around and get it done here.
“Pro Stock is tough. It will humble you in an instant. When you think you’ve got it figured out, you go to Bristol and blow all your [engines] up. I can’t say enough about my guys (crew). They’re amazing and I love them.”
In Top Fuel, Brown raced to his second victory of the season behind the wheel of his Matco Tools dragster when final round opponent Steve Torrence fouled at the start in his Capco Contractors dragster. It was Brown’s 33rd career victory and his third win at this track, as he claimed two wins here in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
“It doesn’t get better than this,” Brown said. “Coming here to Route 66 Raceway is always special and goes beyond words because our team owner Don [Schumacher] will be inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, and what he’s done for the sport and our teams is amazing. Right now you look at Top Fuel and see how competitive that the class is. It’s as tight as Pro Stock car. We’re running e.t.s that are neck and neck, winning by 12 inches or less at over 320 mph.”
With the win, Brown moved to second in the points standings, behind series leader Tony Schumacher, the event’s No. 1 qualifier who was upset in the first round. Brown outran Morgan Lucas, David Grubnic and Shawn Langdon to advance to the final round.
“When you get a race win now with the competition that we have to go through, it’s just remarkable,” Brown said. “The team is doing a great job, and it’s all worth it. The blood, the sweat, and the tears. The heat was like a sauna, I mean I’m 10 pounds lighter than I was on Wednesday. It just feels good to knock one out of the park again. To gain some points and get it done. Because the Countdown is right around the corner. We have just six races left. So we have to get some momentum going for the Western Swing, Indy, and the Countdown. It’s crucial right now, and we’re going to have some hot races in the countdown.”
Veteran driver Arend claimed his first Funny Car win of the season and fourth of his career by defeating rookie Courtney Force in the final round. Arend powered to a performance of 4.131 at 309.20 in his DHL Toyota Camry to hold off the 24-year-old Force, who finished in 4.454 at 272.67 in her Traxxas Ford Mustang.
“This was a real team effort this weekend,” Arend said. “I didn’t do the best job as a driver, at least not with my lights, but we were able to get it done. My crew got this car turned around faster than I’ve ever seen them do it and that made all the difference in the world. This is the first win for the new Toyota Camry so that makes it even more special. I got to the final (here) last year and didn’t win so this also makes up for that. I like to make the most of second chances.”
Arend raced past Tony Pedregon, Tim Wilkerson and Jack Beckman to get to the final. He said the three hour rain delay, which forced teams to have quicker turnaround times in the pits between rounds, actually helped him stay focused today.
“We have some new guys on our team this year and they really stepped it up especially after it rained and we had to turn the car around quicker than usual,” Arend said. “I call them the “yeller fellas” and they did a heck of a job this weekend. That 4.10 in the semis was a great run but we were solid all weekend. We ran good numbers every time. In the semis we had Jon O [Oberhofer, crew chief] Connie [Kalitta] and Del [Worsham] in our trailer and they make the right call and the car responded.”
Arend jumped from 10th to sixth in the points standings and locked up the seventh starting position in the lucrative Traxxas Funny Car Shootout at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. Robert Hight, who lost to Courtney Force in the second round, remained at the top of the points order, while second-place Ron Capps saw his six-race final round streak come to an end with a first round loss to rookie Alexis DeJoria.
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, three-time world champ Hines claimed his second win of the season on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson when final round opponent LE Tonglet turned on the red light at the start on his Nitro Fish Buell. It was Hines’ 27th career victory.
“As soon as I popped the clutch I saw LE’s red-light and I knew I’d won,” Hines said. “Then, it was a nice comfortable ride. I saw him in front of me and paid more attention to his bike than mine and I think I probably missed high gear.”
In earlier rounds, Hines defeated Scotty Pollacheck, Chip Ellis and Hector Arana Jr. The victory continued the Vance & Hines team’s streak of victories this season as Hines and teammate Eddie Krawiec have won all five bike races this weekend. Hines, however, was looking for a get healthy weekend after back-to-back second round losses at the last two events.
“We came in here with a new mindset,” Hines said. “I’ve been down on myself the last few weeks and after Englishtown we took the bike and changed all the wiring and then went testing. I rode my bike and then rode Eddie’s [teammate Eddie Krawiec’s] bike and I ran pretty much the same on both so I came in here with a lot of confidence. Matt [Hines, crew chief] has a good tune-up for hot and muggy conditions and that made the bike a joy to ride. I’m also looking forward to going to Norwalk next weekend.”
With the victory, Hines cut Krawiec’s series lead to 75 points.
The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series continues July 5-8 with the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Norwalk, Ohio.
SATURDAY - SCHUMACHER, FORCE, A. JOHNSON AND ARANA SR. TAKE NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITIONS
Local favorite Tony Schumacher raced to the No. 1 qualifying position in Top Fuel Saturday at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by Super Start Batteries.
John Force (Funny Car), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana Sr. (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also will lead their respective categories into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event near Chicago.
The Chicago resident powered his famed U.S. Army dragster to a performance of 3.763 seconds at 324.83 mph to claim his second top qualifying position of the season and 69th of his career. On the run the seven time world champ moved from ninth to first in the 16-car order. This is his seventh No. 1 qualifying position at Route 66 Raceway. He is a three-time winner at his home track.
Schumacher, who broke a 32-race win drought at Bristol, Tenn. two weeks ago, will face another Chicagoland-based driver – T.J. Zizzo – in the opening round as he goes for his second win in a row.
“T.J. is a good friend of mine,” Schumacher said. “His shop is right down the street from me, so we go to lunch quite a bit. I’m sure he’s going to take his best shot at me. Of course, we’re going to give him our best shot as well. We planned on going for the pole and, fortunately, the car stuck all the way down the track. It’s really nice to come off the win in Bristol and remain hot.”
Friday night qualifying leader Antron Brown dropped to second with his 3.773 at 322.50 in his Matco Tools dragster and Shawn Langdon held on to third with a 3.784 at 322.73 in the Al-Anabi Racing dragster.
In Funny Car, 15-time world champ Force earned his first No. 1 of the season and the 140th of his career with a 4.050 at 310.77 in his Castrol GTX High Mileage Ford Mustang. He will meet Terry Haddock in the first round.
“I knew we were in, but two of my cars [Courtney and Mike Neff] weren’t. I’d rather go home than have Courtney go home. They had a gremlin and they found it. It was very satisfying when they both got in. We hopped it up, to see if we could push it because what you do tonight won’t apply tomorrow because it will be hot. It didn’t stick, but that’s okay. We’ll be fine tomorrow.
“I ran a 4.05 and we have a hot rod that’s starting to show some potential. I just want to race with these guys as long as I can. When we got to the other end, Jack Beckman asked me, “How long has it been since you were the low qualifier?’ I told him, ‘It doesn’t matter. I’m here now.”
Past Route 66 winner Tim Wilkerson posted the quickest run of the day to move to second in the starting order. He powered his Levi Ray & Shoup Ford Mustang to a 4.052 at 308.00 to leapfrog Jack Beckman, who will start third in his Schumacher Electric Dodge Charger with his 4.054 at 311.56.
Johnson claimed his fifth No. 1 of the season and 23rd of his career in Pro Stock with a 6.597 at 209.26 in his Team Mopar Dodge Avenger. Johnson will meet fellow Dodge Avenger driver Jeg Coughlin in the opening round.
“We made four great runs this weekend and picked up the three bonus points on every run so we maxed out on that,” Johnson said. “The Mopar Dodge Avenger is on a rope right now. That’s all I can say. We probably left about a hundredth [of a second] on the table in the last session. We probably could have run a mid-6.58 [against Greg Anderson’s track record of 6.586 set in June 2010]. We weren’t intentionally soft on that run. The track was just a bit better than we thought it would get. The temperature got a bit cooler in the 30 minutes before we ran and we didn’t expect that. The first run that we made when we got here today is probably going to be more like tomorrow’s race day conditions. We made a real good run in the heat, and so that’s what we’re concentrating on.”
Jason Line and Erica Enders tied for the second-quickest run of the weekend, but Line took the second spot in the qualifying lineup by virtue of his faster speed. Line’s Summit Racing Chevy Camaro posted a 6.616 at 208.17, while Enders' GK Motorsports Chevy Cobalt also had a 6.616, but posted a slower speed of 207.08.
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Arana claimed his third No. 1 of the season and 20th of his career, powering his Lucas Oil Buell to a category-best effort of 6.884 at 195.08. Arana will face veteran rider Michael Phillips in the first round.
“I like it and I’m going to like it even better if I can make those perfect runs I’ve been making here tomorrow,” Arana said. “[To win here] would be a load off my shoulders. If I can win my confidence should definitely go up. I got max bonus points, but he [points leader Eddie Krawiec] is still far ahead of me. Anytime you can out-perform the Harleys it’s awesome, but I’m not going to worry about them. I’m only worried about our program.”
Three-time world champ Andrew Hines was second with a 6.917 at 193.79 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson, while Arana’s son, Hector Arana Jr., was third overall with a 6.939 at 193.21 on his Lucas Oil Buell.
DIV. 7 WINS JEGS ALL-STAR TITLE
It took the better part of three decades, but the team from the NHRA Pacific Division finally broke through for their first overall team title in the JEGS Allstars competition. Led by Chris Demke, who claimed the win in Top Alcohol Dragster and Aaron Kinard, who drove to the Super Comp title, Division Director Mike Rice’s troops scored 1,300 points, finishing in a tie with the Southeast Division team. Per the tie-breaker rules, which score additional points for wins, runner-up, and semifinal finishes, the title, and the $20,000 bonus that accompanies it, went to the Division 7 team for the first time. The Division 5 crew, also seeking their first title, finished a respectable third with 1,100 points.
In the final round in Top Alcohol Dragster, Demke banged a supercharger and slowed to a 7.74, but picked up the dramatic win after Randy Meyer fouled away a 5.30, the quickest run of the event. Kinard also chipped in with three big round-wins when he drove his dragster to a narrow 8.911 to 8.915 win over Division 2 racer Sherman Adcock Jr., who was looking to become the first driver to double in the JEGS Allstars race.
The Division 7 team got down to business early as they scored 800 out of a possible 1,000 points in the first round by sending eight of their 10 drivers into the semifinals. The Division 7 team was so dominant that the Division 6 team was mathematically eliminated after round one and the Division 1 team was on life support. However, as the battle progressed, the Division 2 and Division 5 teams stay in the hunt until the very end. The final race of the day in Top Alcohol Funny Car decided the championship when Frank Manzo downed Mickey Ferro, who was the last hope for the Southeast Division, 5.58 to 5.61. For Manzo, it was the tenth JEGS Allstars title in his illustrious career.
The biggest contributors for the Division 2 team were Adcock, who drove to a close 9.901 to 9.903 win in the Super Gas final over Division 5's Kevin Moore and Dylan Stott, who shook off an early loss in Top Dragster but returned to claim the Top Sportsman title by beating blocker Joe Roubicek in the final. Stott won with a 6.89 on his 6.86 dial while Roubicek trailed with a .05-over 7.05.
Division 5 ace and former national champion Bruno Massel dominated in Comp, driving his turbocharged DD/AT Cobalt to a convincing final-round win over newlywed Division 7 racer Justin Lamb. Massel ran a 6.94 on his 7.54 index for the win while Lamb posted an 8.66 on his 9.17 index.
JR Lobner did his part for the Division 5 team with a Top Dragster win over defending JEGS Allstars champ James Monroe. Lobner was perfect with a 6.94 on his 6.94 dial while Monroe broke out by two-hundredths.
The Super Stock title went to Division 4 racer Jerry Emmons, who scored his second win in the special event. Paired with world champion Joe Santangelo in the final, Emmons drove his Lucas Oil entry to a .02-over 9.80 for the win after Santangelo broke out with a 10.33 on his 10.36 dial.
Another repeat winner was Slate Cummings, who stopped Bo Butner to win the Stock title. Cummings posted a .02-over 10.46 in his Moser-backed Firebird while Butner drove his swift BB/SA Cobra Jet to a .03-over 9.27.
The final trophy went to Randy Shipp who put the Division 3 team into the winner’s circle by driving his Nova to a narrow 10.902 to 10.911 win over Tom Manfred in a race that was decided by .002-second at the finish line.
Although the event was completed on Saturday night, there is still a lot of motivation for today’s JEGS Allstars champions heading into tomorrow’s final eliminations for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 Nationals as any racer who can repeat their win tomorrow will be eligible for the JEGS double-up bonus.
FRIDAY - FORCE, BROWN, JOHNSON AND ARANA SR. LEAD QUALIFYING IN CHICAGO
John Force raced to the Funny Car qualifying lead Friday at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by Super Start Batteries.
Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana Sr. (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event at Route 66 Raceway near Chicago.
Force powered his Castrol GTX High Mileage Ford Mustang to a leading performance of 4.050 seconds at 310.77 mph during the first of two night qualifying sessions at this event. The 15-time world champ has been in a bit of a slump since he won the season-opener at Pomona, Calif. in February, and needs to make a surge in the final few races of the regular season to guarantee that he qualifies for the six-race Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship, NHRA’s post-season playoffs.
“The win at Pomona is kind of “we were there” but we didn’t really look that good,” said Force, currently eighth in the points standings. “This is simple. I’m a 15-time champ. I owe sponsors and fans better than what I have been giving them last year and this year. I know what the game is. We’ve showed some consistency lately, but not much to be excited about.”
If the effort stands it will be Force’s NHRA-record 140th No. 1 qualifying position and his first of the season. Force has claimed five No. 1 qualifying positions and three victories in his career at Route 66 Raceway.
“A 4.05 is good but let’s see if we can do it again tomorrow,” Force said. “I thought [Ron] Capps or [Robert] Hight would be right there to break it. All I want to do is play the game. I love it so much.”
Jack Beckman was second in his Schumacher Electric Dodge Charger with a 4.054 at 311.56 and Force teammate Hight was third in his Auto Club Mustang, posting a 4.060 at 309.91. Capps, who has a six-race final round streak going, was the leader after the first session, but ended up eighth in his NAPA Auto Parts Charger with a 4.121 at 303.98.
In Top Fuel, Brown cruised to the top of the order with a 3.773 at 322.50 in his Matco Tools dragster to hold off Al-Anabi Racing driver Shawn Langdon, who posted a 3.784 at 322.73, and teammate Spencer Massey, who was third with a 3.788 at a track record speed of 326.79 in his FRAM/Prestone dragster.
“One thing that I can tell you is that right when I step on the gas, the Matco dragster got out of Dodge,” Brown said. “That was a good, good feeling. It hiked the front tires right up, and it just kept going and going and didn’t stop pulling. When it starts arching up, you know you’re on a great run. All of the guys on our team are really working hard.”
Brown and the rest of the Top Fuel contingent took advantage of the cooler conditions of the evening qualifying session. There will be a second night qualifying session on Saturday so many of the teams will be looking to better tonight’s performances.
“We know that if we can get the car off the starting line, we know we can put the big numbers up,” Brown said. “You get that momentum going early, and everything takes care of itself. Tonight we got off the starting line good, and that’s what it’s all about. I’m stoked and pump and really looking forward to tomorrow.”
Johnson led Pro Stock with a 6.597 at 209.26 in his Team Mopar Dodge Avenger. If the time holds, it would be his fifth No. 1 of the season and 23rd of his career.
“We’ve just got an awesome team right now,” Johnson said. “We’re very consistent, we’re very fast. The Hemi engines are absolutely awesome. Dad [Roy] has managed to find even a little bit more horsepower. Losing the last race [Bristol] was a heartbreaker, especially at home. Hopefully we’ll get a little bit of the good stuff at this race to make things come our way.”
Defending world champ Jason Line was second with a 6.629 at 207.88 in his Summit Racing Chevy Camaro, while Bristol winner Mike Edwards was third with a 6.635 at 208.10 in his Penhall/Interstate Batteries Pontiac.
Arana Sr. paced the two-wheel category with a performance of 6.915 at 192.22 on his Lucas Oil Buell.
“The first race this year was slow, but we’ve picked up the pace and have been doing great ever since,” Arana Sr. said.
Arana took the top spot in the first qualifying session of the day. On his second attempt, his bike slowed near the finish line.
“I was on a great pass,” Arana Sr. said. “The bike was going straight and at about 1,000-foot it started slowing down and I felt my leg getting cold. Then other leg got cold and I knew what had happened. I had a fuel leak and that is what slowed us.”
Hector Arana Jr. sits second on his Lucas Oil Buell with a 6.939 at 193.21 and three-time world champ Andrew Hines is third on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson with a 6.945 at 192.55.
Qualifying continues Saturday with sessions at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday’s eliminations begin at 11 a.m.
