CRITCHLEY, HERNANDEZ GOING FOR DOUBLE DOUBLE

In 1999, circle track standout Tony Stewart attempted to race 1,100 miles on Memorial Day weekend by competing in the Indianapolis 500 during the day and the Coca-Cola 600 at North Carolina’s Charlotte Motor Speedway at night. His attempt at the “double” was fairly successful as he finished in the top 10 at both races.

Now a pair of pair of Pro Modified competitors are going to try to go Stewart one better. Make that two better. Troy Critchley and Josh Hernandez of the AMS Rage Racing Team will be going for a “double double” this coming weekend, and they’re only looking to go less than four miles.

That’s on the track, mind you. They’ll be logging a lot more miles in the air as they travel between the ADRL Summer Drags at Valdosta, Georgia, and the NHRA Midwest Nationals at Madison, Illinois, in an effort to qualify for, and race at, both events.

“Fortunately, Dave Wood and Tommy Lipar of the AMS Rage team have a couple of airplanes, so the plan at the minute is to make two qualifying runs at St. Louis on Friday, then fly to Valdosta for two qualifiers and the racing – Saturday is the main day for ADRL,” Critchley said. “On Saturday night we’ll fly back to St. Louis and race there on Sunday.”

“We’re going to outfit each of our race rigs for either/or,” Critchley said. “I believe the Rage rig is going to St. Louis and the AMS rig is going to Valdosta, both loaded with outlaw and legal cars and all the appropriate spares. We’ll have everything we need, so it should be as smooth as silk. It should be an adventure.”
