NHRA - O'REILLY AUTO PARTS ROUTE 66 NHRA NATIONALS RESULTS
SUNDAY - BROWN, HAGAN, NOBILE AND ARANA JR. WIN BIG AT O’REILLY AUTO PARTS ROUTE 66 NHRA NATIONALS
Matt Hagan ended an eleven race winless streak in Funny Car with a victory Sunday at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals.
Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Vincent Nobile (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana Jr. (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event at Route 66 Raceway.
Hagan, the 2011 Funny Car world champ, ran his Mopar Express Lane Dodge Charger past Don Schumacher Racing teammate Tommy Johnson Jr. with a 4.098-second pass at 310.48 mph to claim the 11th victory of his career. It was Hagan’s first win since the season-ending race in Pomona last year and his second final round appearance of 2014.
“We’ve been working at it this year,” said Hagan who now has three wins at Chicago. “It’s been a very humbling year for us. Last year we came out and won five races and you kind of think you are going to set the world on fire the following year.”
Hagan was sitting 10th in the Funny Car point standings just seven races before the Countdown to the Championship playoff, a position that the DSR driver was not used to. The win moved Hagan to eighth in the points and he sits 78 points ahead of Tim Wilkerson for the final transfer spot.
"We could feel the pressure to stay in the Top 10 because if you're not running for a championship, Don isn't happy,” said Hagan, who beat 2012 world champ Jack Beckman, Bob Bode and recent Epping winner Ron Capps on the way to the final. "The competition is just so, so tough out here in Funny Car, so when you turn four win lights on, you just don't want this day to end. When 10 guys come together for a common goal, you hope that it could go on for two or three more days like this."
Johnson Jr. was appearing in his second final of the season following his victory in Bristol. The Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger team rose to second in the point standings and trails Robert Hight by 246 points. Hight reached the second round before falling to Capps.
Brown piloted his Matco Tools dragster to a pass of 3.814 at 317.34, defeating second-time finalist Brittany Force. It was the fourth win of the season for Brown and first since Houston.
“It felt really good to stay poised this weekend,” said Brown, the 2012 Top Fuel world champ. “We had some things go our way. To run that great in the final, to put out an .81 is a credit to all of our guys.”
Brown picked up his 41st career win and 29th in Top Fuel. He now has four wins at Route 66 Raceway, two in Top Fuel and two in Pro Stock Motorcycle. He beat Billy Torrence, Englishtown winner Richie Crampton and Clay Millican en route to the final round.
“It’s amazing,” said Brown, who reached 500 round wins in NHRA competition this weekend. “We always love coming here the way the weather can swing. We had some great runs on qualifying. We knew what we were capable of.”
Force, driver of the Castrol EDGE dragster, was appearing in her second career final and second this season. She also faced Brown in the final of Phoenix earlier this year. With her performance, Force moved up to seventh in the Top Fuel point standings. Category points leader Doug Kalitta fell in the second round to Kalitta Motorsports teammate J.R. Todd.
In Pro Stock, Nobile drove his Mountain View Tire Chevy Camaro to a 6.655 at 208.01 holeshot victory over KB Racing teammate Jason Line, his first win since Seattle last season.
“It’s kind of a long time coming,” Nobile said of his winless streak. “I know I’m young and I’ve won some races but when you go a streak like I’ve done and not won one, you kind of forget what it feels like. I owe it all to my team. They gave me a great car.”
It was the ninth win of Nobile’s career and first of the season. Nobile advanced to the final with round wins over Jonathan Gray, reigning world champ Jeg Coughlin and Shane Tucker before his victory against Line.
“As a team we won,” Nobile said of his final round win over his teammate. “That was the ultimate goal. We want to have two of our cars in the final round of every race.”
Line, driver of the Summit Racing Chevy Camaro, was appearing in his second final of the season following his win at the season-opening event in Pomona. He currently sits fourth in points. Points leader Erica Enders-Stevens’ day ended on a holeshot to Elite Motorsports teammate Tucker.
Arana Jr. grabbed his first Pro Stock Motorcycle victory of 2014 with a pass of 6.925 at 193.93 on his Lucas Oil Buell, defeating father and teammate Hector Arana and his Lucas Oil Products Buell. The win was Arana Jr.’s eighth career victory and first since Sonoma last season.
“We won together,” said Arana Jr., who advanced to the final with victories against Gainesville winner Steve Johnson, Charlotte and Englishtown winner Andrew Hines and Shawn Gann. “I would not be here without [Hector Sr.]. To race him in a final is a dream come true. We’ve been trying to do this for four years and it finally happened. Now we just need a brother-brother final with me and Adam [Arana]."
Arana Jr. sits third in the Pro Stock Motorcycle point standings. Arana was looking for his first win since 2009 and is currently seventh in points. Points leader Eddie Krawiec was eliminated in the second round after red lighting against recent Epping winner Angie Smith.
The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues July 3-6 at Norwalk, Ohio with the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park.
SATURDAY - KALITTA, JOHNSON JR., A. JOHNSON AND KRAWIEC CLAIM NO. 1 SEEDS AT THE ROUTE 66 NHRA NATIONALS
Tommy Johnson Jr. ran his first career three-second pass in Funny Car to claim the No. 1 qualifier for Sunday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.
Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also claimed No. 1 qualifying positions and will lead their respective classes into tomorrow’s 11 a.m. eliminations at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event.
Johnson Jr. piloted his Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger to a 3.999-second pass at 317.19 mph to secure the No. 1 seed during the final qualifying session. With the run, Johnson Jr. became the 10th Funny Car driver to complete a three-second pass. He will line up against two-time world champ Tony Pedregon in the opening round.
“The conditions out here were difficult,” said Johnson Jr., winner of the Funny Car event in Bristol two weekends ago. “It’s hot and humid. Personally I didn’t think we could do it. But the guys were swinging for the fence, they were going for it.”
The run gave Johnson Jr. his first No. 1 of the season and 10th of his career. He will line up against two-time world champ Tony Pedregon in the opening round.
Del Worsham qualified No. 2 with a 4.023 at 289.76 in his DHL Toyota Camry. He will be paired with Bob Bode in round one. Points leader Robert Hight was the top qualifier after Friday and will race against Jeff Arend as the No. 3 seed. 16-time world champ John Force and daughter Courtney Force round out the top five in Funny Car qualifying. J. Force will open with Alexis DeJoria while C. Force goes up against Bob Tasca III.
Kalitta drove his Mac Tools dragster to a 3.767 second pass at 327.43 mph to claim the top spot for the fifth time this season. Kalitta saved his best for last, completing the run during the final qualifying session.
“I was sitting back there in the staging lanes and it was pretty exciting,” said Kalitta, the points leader in Top Fuel. “Everybody that was running seemed to be going low. I think the fans got a good session out of that.”
Kalitta now has 41 career Top Fuel No. 1 qualifiers. Kalitta will race Pat Dakin in the first round of eliminations on Sunday.
Seven-time Top Fuel world champion and recent Epping winner Tony Schumacher qualified second with a 3.775 at 325.61 at his home track in the U.S. Army dragster. Schumacher, the defending winner of the event, will battle Epping semifinalist Clay Millican in round one. 2012 world champ Antron Brown qualified third and will race Billy Torrence. Brittany Force and Steve Torrence round out the top five qualifiers and face Terry McMillen and Shawn Langdon respectively.
In Pro Stock, Johnson recorded his third No. 1 qualifier of the season and 34th of his career following his Friday time of 6.485 at 212.79 in his Magneti Marelli Dodge Dart. He will open eliminations against Mark Hogan.
“Conditions today weren’t as favorable as they were last night; it was a bit warmer and more humid but the track stayed awesome,” said Johnson, who has three wins on the season. “Our Mopar crew did a heck of a job and we were No. 1 in three of four runs. We really like racing in these conditions.”
Category leader Erica Enders-Stevens is the No. 2 qualifier for the second weekend in a row following her 6.594 at 209.65 in her Elite Motorsports Chevy Camaro. The run booked Enders-Stevens a first round appearance with Dave River. Reigning series champion Jeg Couglin ran a 6.604 at 209.30 to claim the third seed and a first round matchup with Larry Morgan. Pomona winner Jason Line and recent Bristol and Epping No. 1 qualifier Shane Gray qualified fourth and fifth.
Krawiec ran a track-record time of 6.872 at 194.86 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson during Friday qualifying to grab the top spot.
“Today it was a little hotter and more humid, but the track was great,” said Krawiec. “My hat’s off to NHRA and the Route 66 Raceway crew. They did a great job with the racing surface.”
It is Krawiec’s fourth No. 1 in a row and 18th of his career. He will face LE Tonglet in the first round.
Hector Arana Jr. earned the second spot with his 6.941 run at 192.91 on his Lucas Oil Buell. His reward is a first round pairing with Gainesville winner Steve Johnson. Scotty Pollacheck, reigning world champion Matt Smith and Hector Arana round out the top five.

FRIDAY - B. FORCE, HIGHT, A. JOHNSON AND KRAWIEC RACE TO TOP AFTER FIRST DAY OF QUALIFYING AT ROUTE 66
Brittany Force piloted to the provisional No. 1 qualifying position in Top Fuel during Friday qualifying at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals.
Robert Hight (Funny Car), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event at Route 66 Raceway.
Force ran a 3.791-second pass at 324.51 mph in her Castrol EDGE dragster to claim the top spot after the first two qualifying sessions. Force, the reigning Auto Club of Southern California Road to the Future Award winner, has started in the top spot twice this season and will have two more attempts to secure a third top starting position.
“I was excited,” said Force, the first and only Top Fuel driver in John Force Racing history. “It felt like a quick run. I felt it pull me to the center line so I never thought we were going to be No. 1. But we got it down there. When I jumped out at the other end I was excited and just crossing my fingers it would hold.”
Force, who claimed her first career No. 1 qualifier at the NHRA Kansas Nationals in Topeka earlier this season, held off Spencer Massey for the top spot. Massey, driver of the Battery Extender powered by Schumacher Electric dragster, has two wins on the season and ran a 3.804 at 324.83 for the No. 2 provisional spot.
In Funny Car, Hight raced his Auto Club Ford Mustang to a 4.026-second run at 317.64 mph to take the lead after the first two sessions. Hight, the 2009 world champ, topped Tommy Johnson Jr.’s elapsed time on the last run of the second session.
"[Crew Chief] Mike Neff was actually very happy with that run,” said Hight, who has four wins on the season. “We were No. 1 after the first session, and No. 1 again tonight, that's six small points today. Tomorrow we're going to get all over this thing. We're going to get after it. We're either going to run a three or we're going to smoke the tires."
Johnson Jr.’s Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger was strong, running a 4.038 at 318.32 to claim the second spot after the first day of qualifying.
In Pro Stock, Johnson laid down a 6.574 at 209.43 in his Magneti Marelli Dodge Dart to top the Friday leaderboard.
“I would be surprised if you could have sucked another two-thousandths out of that run,” Johnson said. “It was perfect. There was nothing left. Actually both of the runs I made today were two of the best I’ve made this year, maybe even in my career. We left nothing on the table.”
Johnson, the 2012 world champ, is going for his third No. 1 starting spot of the season and has two more qualifying sessions to improve his performance. He has 33 career No. 1 qualifiers.
Points leader Erica Enders-Stevens sits second after the first day with her pass of 6.594 at 209.65 in her Elite Motorsports Chevy Camaro.
Krawiec shot to the top of Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying with a track record 6.872 at 194.86 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson. Krawiec, who has been No. 1 qualifier in three straight events, has yet to win or qualify in the top position at Route 66 Raceway.
“The key is that we made two good passes today,” said Krawiec, a three-time world champ. “On the first run I ran a 6.93, which was good, but we also left a lot on the table. We used that run and came up with a good tune-up for Q2. The track is really good here and we can get after it.”
Hector Arana Jr., the No. 1 qualifier last weekend, sits second after a 6.941 at 192.74 on his Lucas Oil Buell.
Friday's results after the first two of four rounds of qualifying for the 17th annual O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by Super Start Batteries at Route 66 Raceway, 12th of 24 events in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. Qualifying will continue Saturday for Sunday's final eliminations.
