RARE VIDEO: AHRA/PRA NATIONAL CHALLEGE, TULSA, OK.

ahra praThanks to Bob Petit's YouTube.com page, we bring this home video footage. If there's a downside, the sound of the race cars are replaced by those of the projector.

The following is his explanation. In 1972 Don Garlits and the Professional Racers Association along with Jim Tice and the AHRA teamed up to stage a drag race at Tulsa International Raceway the same weekend as the NHRA held their US Nationals at Indy as a protest to the NHRA to up their winners purses for the Pro classes. It was probably the biggest all-Pro drag race in the history of the sport. Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock had over 60 entries each. At the end of the Labor Day weekend Don Moody took Top Fuel, Tom McEwen took Funny Car and Bill Grumpy Jenkins took the Pro Stock win.

This silent cinema film footage is from Antony Billinton's drag racing archives and taken by Bob Phelps.
