BUTNER TOPS PRO STOCK FIELD DURING QUALIFYING AT SONOMA

Beginning another streak didn’t take long for KB Racing’s Pro Stock team.

Just two weeks after seeing its team No. 1 qualifying Pro Stock streak stopped at 12 races by Shane Gray at the K&N Nationals in Chicago July 9 – the team returned to its qualifying throne Saturday at the Sonoma (Calif.) Nationals.

Bo Butner of KB Racing had an elapsed time of 6.553 seconds at 211.26 mph on Friday night that held to allow the second-year Pro Stock driver to claim the No. 1 spot.

This was Butner’s second career No. 1 qualifying position as he also nabbed the top spot in Phoenix Feb. 28.

“I’ve had a fast car all year, that’s no surprise,” Butner said of his Chevy Camaro. “Everybody was actually closer (Saturday) than I figured we would be. I figured we would be a couple of hundredths off, but it was pretty close. We made four good runs, which is tough for me to do. The team is great and they powered us right to the top.”

As good as KB Racing – Jason Line, Greg Anderson and Butner – has been in qualifying it has been even better on race day. Line (7) and Anderson (6) combined to win the first 13 races of the season before their victory binge was snapped by Allen Johnson last weekend at the Mile-High Nationals in Denver. Butner, meanwhile, has three runner-up finishes this season at Las Vegas, Charlotte and Chicago.

“The last few races I’ve kind of tried some stuff on the starting line,” Butner said. “I feel like if I leave with them I should win and that shouldn’t be hard, but it hasn’t happened yet. Four good runs in a row and we actually didn’t change a lot from Denver which is amazing tune-up wise, and we need four more (Sunday).”

Butner lost in the second round at the Mile-High Nationals to Line, but he regrouped at Sonoma, especially during his Friday night qualifying lap.

“I actually drove decent and managed to hit my shift points pretty good, and the track was very good, and we actually probably could have given it a little more,” Butner said about Friday night. “Some of the teams were (going after the track a little more Saturday) and some of them got away with it and some of them couldn’t. Our team is very, very good on race day if you’ve noticed and we were kind of in race-day trim (Saturday), which was good.”

Anderson qualified No. 2 (6.567 seconds) and Line is No. 8 (6.594 seconds), which didn’t go unnoticed by Butner.

“They like to win, but they like to see us all do well,” Butner said about his teammates. “We like to be 1-2-3, that’s greedy, but this was good for my guys on my side, but they are all happy. Ken and Judy (Black) are happy and everybody is happy when we run good. They’re blown away how I can be between 70 and 80 (reaction time) every hit if I stage normal. I even went to Frank Hawley’s school a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t go through the school, but we just spoke for a few hours and I’m trying some new stuff and it seems to work. I think I can be 20s and 30s if I do my deal up there. They are rooting for me and none of us got to the final last week (in Denver) and Jason texted Monday morning and said he was tired of losing, that’s Jason. They’re all happy and we have run good and we’re ready for the Countdown.”
