THE TRICKSTER HEADLINES FIRST DAY IHRA NORTHERN NATIONALS QUALIFYING

There was a time when "Trickie" Rickie Smith ruled the roost in IHRA competition.

Friday, at a soggy U.S. 131 Motorsports Park, Smith a seven-time IHRA champion provided a refresher course during first-day qualifying at the IHRA Northern Nationals. Rain limited Friday action to one professional qualifying session. Summit Pro-Am Tour activity was cancelled and will resume Saturday morning with qualifying at 9 a.m. ET.

Joining Smith atop their respective divisions were Jason Rupert (Nitro Funny Car), Tracy Kile (Nitro Motorcycle) and Trevor Eman (Pro Stock)

Smith, who remains the most successful Pro Stock driver in the race series' history with 31 national event wins and five world championships, took the top spot in Pro Modified division while running a 5.831 elapsed time at 247.25 mph in Friday's lone session.

Billy Glidden, newly crowned series champion Billy Harper, Jason Hamstra and Harold Martin finished out the top-five spots.

Rupert, the Nitro Funny Car point leader, dominated again at US 131 Motorsports Park. The defending event winner ran a 5.578, 259.22 mph provisional world record, elapsed time world record if he can back it up during the second round qualifying.

Mike McIntire Jr, Shawn Bowen, Marc White and John Hale finished out the top-five in Northern Nationals qualifying.

Kile shot to the top of the two-wheeled nitro division on the strength of 6.412 second pass at 219.08 mph and Rickey House placed second with a 6.571 at 219.73 mph pass.

Number one and two in the point standings, Jay Turner and Bob Malloy, did not make qualifying passes due to problems with their motorcycles.

Aruba-native Eman paced Pro Stock with a 6.383 second pass at 219.19 mph. Dean Goforth claimed second, running a 6.395 second, 217.50 mph qualifying pass. JR Carr, Matt Bertsch and Dwayne Rice rounded out the top-five.

Racing action continues Saturday with Summit Pro-Am Tour action and a final round of professional qualifying and eliminations. The final session of professional qualifying starts at 2 PM, EST and eliminations begin at 5 PM.
