GLIDDEN, RUPERT HEADLINE IHRA NORTHERN NATS WINNERS

Many years have lapsed since a Glidden graced the IHRA winner's circle.

Billy Glidden rectified the situation on Saturday as he drove Harry Hruska's turbocharger Camaro to the Pro Modified title at the IHRA Northern Nationals, the final stop on the 2016 IHRA season.

Joining Glidden in the winner's circle were Jason Rupert (Funny Car), Frank Capone (Nitro Motorcycle) and Cary Goforth (Pro Stock).

The last time the Glidden Family won an IHRA event was in 1988, when patriarch Bob Glidden captured the IHRA Summer Nationals title, his second of two wins that season. Billy Glidden was on his father's crew at the time.

Glidden captured his second win of the season, and first-ever in IHRA, by stopping Jason Hamstra in the final round. Over the course of the weekend, Glidden claimed the speed world record of 250.98 mph.

Billy Harper claimed the 2016 IHRA Pro Modified World Championship Friday night after he secured the third spot in qualifying for the Northern Nationals.

Rupert successfully defended his Nitro Funny Car World Championship and in doing so shattered the elapsed time World Record with a 5.522, 262.54 mph to beat Mike McIntire Jr., who needed to break an IHRA record in order to secure the championship by one point. This was the third consecutive season McIntire has finished runner-up for the title.

Capone landed in the Nitro Motorcycle winner's circle after he defeated Tii Tharpe in the final round. Capone ran a 6.459 at 220.26 mph to Tharpe's 6.503 at 200.80 mph and garnered his first IHRA Ironman. Jay Turner successfully defended his world championship despite failing to qualify.

Goforth successfully defended his IHRA Pro Stock series title, his third consecutive, with a 6.315 elapsed time at 221.35 mph to beat JR Carr in the final. The Pro Stock series championship; however, was decided in the semis when Goforth narrowly beat Trevor Eman, 6.319, 221.57 mph to 6.342, 220.91 mph.
