PLAN B HAS KRAWIEC IN THE PSM TOP SPOT FOR RACEDAY

Plan B is starting to look pretty good for Eddie Krawiec.

With chassis issues plaguing the Pro Stock Motorcycle duo of Krawiec and Andrew Hines since they debuted the new Harley-Davidson Street Rod in June, the Vance & Hines team decided to go to Plan B.

That included reverting back to their old chassis and making adjustments from there, which included cutting pieces off the chassis and replacing them in between every race for the past couple months.

It has worked and the U.S. Nationals have seen the biggest breakthrough, with Krawiec taking the No. 1 qualifying spot into Monday’s eliminations after his pass of 6.822 at 196.62 mph on Saturday.

“Coming here we knew we had to step it up and really get things right, and we went to Plan B,” Krawiec said. “There’s a lot of smart guys in our camp. We worked on our old chassis, converting some stuff, making it as current as we can get it and adapt it to the new Street Rod bodywork, and it’s proven to be a success. When you can’t get it right with what you’re working with, go back to what you know and that’s kind of what we’ve done, and it’s paid off.”

Plan B has looked impressive all weekend in Indy thus far.

Hines initially took the top qualifying spot on Friday with a run of 6.825 before Krawiec made his great run during the second qualifying session – and third overall – the next day.

It’s a great sign for a team that has been trying a multitude of things heading into the Countdown to the Championship. Hines has yet to win this year and while Krawiec has two, including one on the new Street Rod in Denver, he knew the team had to show big improvements at Indy.

That’s been the case through qualifying, even with drastically changing temperatures.

“Friday was insane and here we are Sunday, we’re simulating first and second round,” said Krawiec, who grabbed his third No. 1 qualifier this year. “Fortunate for me, we’ve had low E.T. four of the last five rounds, so I have an awesome motorcycle going into (Monday). Right now my main focus is having good reaction times, making clean laps down the dragstrip.”

Solving the chassis issues isn’t a total done deal, as both Krawiec and Hines continues to struggle off the starting line. With LE Tonglet and reigning world champion Jerry Savoie combining for seven wins thus far, Krawiec knows those problems must be rectified heading into the Countdown to the Championship.

But the hybrid chassis designs continue to show improvement and potential, and that has Krawiec excited for the future – both immediate and in the long-term.

“You have to be ready when you roll into Indy and, for us, we’ve kind of turned the corner of where we need to be,” said Krawiec, who won the U.S. Nationals in 2014. “We were fast off the trailer and we knew right where we needed to be. I think we’ve got a pretty handle on it. We just kept improving on what we have. It’s only going to make us better in the end.”
