COURTNEY FORCE IS NO. 1 AT NORWALK AFTER ABBREVIATED FIRST DAY OF QUALIFYING

Once again, Courtney Force is dominating Funny Car qualifying.

Force, who arrived in Norwalk, Ohio, leading the season points standings, showed no signs of slowing down Friday.

Force clocked a 3.935-second lap at 327.66 mph to snare the provisional No. 1 position after Friday’s lone qualifying session.

“Going up there I was a little surprised that we were going to lay down a number like that,” Force said. “With the rain coming, I was looking for just a clean run A to B, but I think obviously having top crew chiefs in Brian Corradi and Dan Hood, they saw the numbers that were being put on the board and I could see the look in their eyes that they were ready to go for it. It went straight down there, and it felt like a good run. I hit the parachutes and they told me we went to the top. So, it was awesome for them to put a 3.93 on the board like that. I was little bummed we were not able to get the second session in, but to be able to get those three (bonus) points is pretty great.”

Force, who pilots the Advance Auto Parts Chevy Camaro SS, has won four races this season and qualified No. 1 at seven of the 11 completed events. Force has 24 career No. 1 qualifying spots.

If Force’s ET holds, it would be her third No. 1 qualifying performance in a row as she was tops on the qualifying ladder at Richmond, Va., and Bristol, Tenn.

Rain canceled the second qualifying session Friday, and the weather is something Force is aware of this weekend.

“For sure,” said Force when asked if the uncertainty of the weather put extra pressure on her. “Rolling up on that pass, I had a talk with my crew chiefs and said 'looking at the weather I think it is pretty obvious that no matter what happens I have to get this thing down there.' They were like you must just stay calm and collected. Our plan is to have a solid run, but as a driver you're thinking 'I might have to pedal this thing, let’s get it collected and get it to the other end.'”

Force acknowledged that being the last pair in the first qualifying session benefitted her team.

“To hear what the other teams are running, and I actually was more concerned what the No. 16 qualifier was running, and how hard I would have to pedal it if it came down to that,” she said. “I think all Corradi and Danny were hearing is what is the No. 1 spot, which isn’t a bad thing. This was a great start to the weekend.”
