BRITTANY FORCE EARNS TOP SPOT ON RAINY FIRST DAY AT NORWALK

Rain wrecked the second session of qualifying Friday at the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals in Norwalk.

Reigning Top Fuel world champion Brittany Force took full advantage of the first session, clocking a 3.776-second elapsed time at 324.44 mph to take the provisional No. 1 qualifying position.

“That was very important for our team,” said Force about the pass. “You don’t know what you’re going to get, you don’t know how many laps you’re going to get going into race day. So, each run you want to get as much as you can (out of it). The conditions were great, they were cool. I was trying to go straight down there, and I was surprised we put a 77 on the board and that was cool that we stayed there in the No. 1 spot. We still had some tough competitors behind us who could have bumped us down, but we stayed up there with that 77 and we are very happy with that run.”

Tony Schumacher and Steve Torrence were next in the qualifying order with 3.792-second laps. Schumacher was No. 2 based on his faster mph of 330.63.

Force arrived in Norwalk seventh in the points standings, tied with Terry McMillen. If she maintains the No. 1 qualifying position Saturday it will be the 10th of her career. Earlier this season, she qualified No. 1 at the Four-Wide Nationals.

“This is an adjustment, mostly a big adjustment for my crew chiefs to get these set-ups before we head down the race track, but we’re happy with that (run),” said Force about coming from hot tracks in Richmond, Va., and Bristol, Tenn. “That was a stout run and I think it's going to be pretty cool all weekend long and that sets us up for the rest of the weekend and we will just keep pulling for more.”

After Friday’s first and only qualifying session Brittany and her sister, Courtney were No. 1 qualifiers in Top Fuel and Funny Car.

“I was back in the staging lanes when I heard she went right to the top and it’s exciting to share No. 1 with her,” Brittany said. “We’re hoping to hang that in there all weekend, but really go for a win. That’s one thing we would both love to do, to double up. Especially since we have matching Advance Auto Parts cars.”

Force did take a moment to talk about her recent nomination for the 2017 ESPYS Best Driver Award. The winner will be announced July 18.

“I’m so excited,” Force said about the nomination. “Really, it just tops off everything our team accomplished last year. Wrapping up in Pomona and bringing home that championship put us in a spot for that ESPY, and really what it is being on this list of other great drivers. That’s huge and something I’m proud of.”

Despite being a world champ, Force remains humble.

“You don’t ever want to get too confident, that’s something my dad (John) taught me,” Brittany said. “If you get too confident it gets taken away from you. You want to have that boost of confidence, but you don’t want it to take you too far to where you get in trouble with it. A great run like that I think it motivates the whole team and makes us realize what we are fighting for, what we really want and that’s a win at the end of the weekend.”
