BEARD TO BE INDUCTED INTO GPSA HALL OF FAME

Lee Beard can add another line to his ever-impressive career resume.

Beard, an NHRA world championship crew chief and team manager, will be inducted into the Great Pueblo Sports Association Hall of Fame Nov. 14 at the Occhiato Ballroom at the Colorado State University-Pueblo campus.

Beard is a native of Pueblo, Colo. Beard was a 1971 graduate of Pueblo Central High School, and a 1975 graduate of the University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo with a degree in industrial arts.

Beard was introduced to the sport of drag racing by his former industrial arts teacher at Central, Ed Renck, a former Top Fuel and Pro Comp driver in NHRA’s Division V. Renck was inducted into the GPSA in 2008.

Beard is part of the eight-member 2018 GPSA class which also consists of Mike James, Rick Macias, Gene Poston, Dave Ryder, Eddie Smith, Lou Willschau, and Mike Zaremba. Poston, Smith and Willschau will be inducted posthumously.

Beard was inducted into the Colorado Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2016 and Renck joined him in the Colorado Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2017.

Beard retired from drag racing in 2017.

Although Beard no longer works as an NHRA crew chief, he was hired recently by FOX Sports to be a Technical Analyst on NHRA TV broadcasts.

Beard tuned the late Gary Ormsby to an NHRA Top Fuel world championship in 1989.

In 1992, Beard won a world championship as team manager of Larry Minor Motorsports when Cruz Pedregon captured the nitro Funny Car title. He also was the team manager at Don Schumacher Racing when Tony Schumacher was the Top Fuel champ in 2009.

During his decorated career, Beard amassed 55 NHRA national event wins with 12 different drivers in Top Fuel and Funny Car. Beard is the only NHRA crew chief to win national events in Top Fuel and Funny Car with 12 different drivers. Six of those were first-time winners.

Beard has won national events with 14 different drivers total in his career. Beard's last two wins came in 2016 and 2017 as he guided Larry Dixon and Dom Lagana to wins in Australia while working for Santo Rapisarda.
