NATAAS, BELLEMEUR, GUSSO PACE FIRST DAY NHRA FINALS SPORTSMAN QUALIFYING

 

On Thursday, it was ladies' day at the top of the sportsman food chain in qualifying for the Auto Club NHRA Finals in Pomona, Ca. Female drivers paced the first two spots in the Top Alcohol Dragster division. 

Julie Nataas thundered to the top spot in the dragsters while Sean Bellemeur paced the Funny Cars in their lone session. Travis Gusso was the king of the hill in Competition Eliminator. 

Nataas, drove the Randy Meyer Racing entry to the provisional pole with a 5.232 elapsed time at 274.75 miles per hour. On her heels was Jackie Fricke with a 5.245 with a top speed 277.94. Dan Mercier was third with a 5.260. Shawn Cowie (5.261) and James Stevens (5.268) rounded out the top five. 

Bellemeur created some breathing room for himself as he laid down a 5.474, 269.89. Doug Gordon (5.493) and Shane Westerfield (5.498) were within striking distance. 

Gusso, behind the wheel of his D/Super Modified Cobalt, eeked out the Comp No. 1 spot as his 8.331 was good enough for -.649, .007 better than Tibor Kador's D/Econo Altered Cobalt. Dean Carter was third, -.623 under the A/Npstalgia Dragster 

Other top qualifiers included Angelo DeCarlo (Super Stock), Steve Wann (Stock), John Richardson (Top Dragster) and Brian Flamm (Top Sportsman).
