PREDICTION TIME 2008 – NHRA POWERADE
Our crack staff of prognosticators give championship predicting a whirl …
Each year our “crack”
staff of prognosticators joins together shortly after the final test session to
determine the champions of the upcoming season. We had a dismal 25% success rate last
season but we feel good about our chances this year. Here’s how we see it all
shaking out for 2008.
LAST SEASON’S PREDICTIONS
TOP FUEL
OUR PREDICTED CHAMPION – Hot Rod Fuller
All it took was one look at Hot Rod Fuller’s face last November in Pomona, California, to know that losing a championship on the last race of the season would be a one-time occurrence. Fuller and tuner Rob Flynn are over the Countdown politics. They know the game plan needed to secure victory.
This year they’ll be prepared. They will know when to test and when to run all out. They also know when to walk to the podium to capture a world championship.
However, just because they know the game plan doesn’t constitute a dominant, cut-your-throat kind of championshi0p victory. This will be a hard-fought battle that will go down to the wire with the likes of Tony Schumacher and Brandon Bernstein.
This one will be less than ten points to decide.

FUNNY CAR
OUR PREDICTED CHAMPION – Robert Hight
There were lots of reasons that Robert Hight should have won a championship last year, but the title went rightfully to Tony Pedregon. This year will provide a similar scenario with Ron Capps having lots of reasons to be the world champion, but this year it will be Hight winning the title.
Capps will be the clear-cut favorite in the first phase of the championship, but so will Hight
Hight will have lots of reasons to be thankful for this season including seven national event victories and watching his boss John Force not only return but score a national event victory.
This time when the championship scenario comes around, Hight will be in the driver’s seat – and not get out.

PRO STOCK
OUR PREDICTED CHAMPION – Greg Anderson
Hell hath no fury like a Greg Anderson scorned and the Pro Stock field will discover that when the tour opens in Pomona this weekend.
Anderson will top ten national events this season and pay no attention to the pre-season testing of the new Pontiac GXP. When it is go-time, Anderson will have the KB Racing machine running and running at a rapid rate.
Last year, Anderson appeared to be a lock for the championship until a late-season slump took root. That won’t be the case.
With Dave Connolly out of the mix, Anderson is going to run roughshod. Sure, Jeg Coughlin will win some races – but this will be Anderson’s time to shine – again.

PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE
OUR PREDICTED CHAMPION – Chris Rivas
Rivas, unceremoniously dismissed in the middle of the Pomona race, will use a combination of faith and personal motivation to prove his case as the champion. He’ll also take advantage of the potent nature aboard the powerful G2 Buell of George Smith and George Bryce.
Rivas is a complete package of riding ability and a calm demeanor. Those are good traits to have because he’s gonna need them. This season’s Pro Stock Bike competition will be the toughest it’s ever been.
When the championship is on the line, Rivas will deliver and do it convincingly.
