BO BUTNER RELISHES HIS FIRST INDY TITLE

Bo Butner has won in six different categories of drag racing; actually, seven, if you count a grand victory at The Million. The bottom line is Bo knows how to win.

Up until Monday afternoon, the one thing Butner didn't know how to do was seal the deal at the NHRA U.S. Nationals, the most prestigious drag race in the world.

As it turned out, the same car he won in his first time racing Super Gas would deliver the elusive maiden Indy victory. Honestly speaking, he wouldn't have cared if he had to win the trophy in a foot race.

"To win Indy, I wouldn't care if it was on this golf cart because I have had so many attempts," Butner said. "This is our home track, and I haven't closed the deal here. So it's finally good to get it done. I've had plenty of opportunities. Don't get me wrong, I would love for it to be in a Pro Stock car, but it's Indy. It doesn't matter what it is. I'm happy to have done it finally. So now if I do retire, I really have nothing to come back, have to do."

Truth be told, Butner won in what could be considered the most challenging class to win from a driving standpoint.

"The challenge of winning this class is ridiculous," Butner said. "Every guy goes up there; they know their cars, just like when I won the Million. That was my first big bracket race; we went there, and luckily, it takes a lot of luck. I mean, I was off, and luckily it went our way, but yeah, you just had to be in the right place. That's Alan Reinhart's right place, wrong time."

Just the fact Butner had the physical wherewithal to run the Super Gas gauntlet proved to be a story in itself.

"I've been under the weather today," Butner admitted. "Something has came over [Randi Lyn Shipp] and me since this morning, and we don't know what or why, but yeah, finally, because it was a weird final. He had some problems, and when you look back, and they're not where they're supposed to be, you really question, 'What's going on here?"

For Butner, what was going on was a new experience. He was winning the NHRA U.S. Nationals.
