#CLASSICDRAGRACING - PLAYING CHICKEN WITH FUNNY CARS

Travel back to a time when Funny Car racing had more than its share. of characters. At the 1980 NHRA Springnationals, Billy Meyer was matched against Raymond Beadle when his reverser broke.

Meyer, who had extensive experience at racing go-karts, decided he was going to attempt to spin out his Hawaiian Tropic Chevy Citation Funny Car. In doing so, he crossed the centerline and drew a disqualification.

For the record, the rule has since been changed to note that a car can cross the centerline on a burnout which could have made for a tighter championship battle in 1980.
