The start of qualifying was delayed more than two-and-a-half hours for track repairs after Pro Nitrous driver Tommy Franklin suffered a scary, multiple rollover crash in his 1968 Camaro that gouged two large potholes in the racing surface. Franklin was uninjured in the accident, but his car, in just its second race outing was essentially destroyed.

Mt. Airy, MD’s Frank “Flying Meatball” Gugliotta edged Jeff Dobbins of Wilmington, NC, by just three-thousandths at Maryland International Raceway to sit atop the first ADRL Extreme Pro Stock qualifying list ever printed.
The lengthy delay also pushed back the ADRL’s scheduled second round of Friday-night qualifying to 10 a.m. on Saturday, with a third session planned before elimination rounds begin in late-afternoon.

Also taking qualifying leads into Saturday are former ADRL winners Joshua Hernandez and his National Guard-backed ’57 Chevy in the unlimited Pro Extreme class, Dennis Radford in Pro Nitrous with his 1970 AAR Cuda and Ronnie Proccopio in Pro Extreme Motorcycle.

Friday at the ADRL U.S. Drags also featured the introduction of a new professional class to the Missouri-based series with the first leg of the special, two-race Sonny’s Extreme Pro Stock Challenge presented by Purvis Ford. Maryland’s own Frank Gugliotta of Mt. Airy, holds the provisional top qualifying spot with a 4.11-seconds lap at more than 176 mph in his 2007 Mustang.
