BAKER WILL DRIVE FOR MIKE ASHLEY IN 2009

NHRA Rookie of the Year Joe Baker will return to competition in 2009 as the driver for Mike Ashley's soon to be announced Pro Modified team.

According to team owner Ashley, the team has procured major sponsorship to be announced in January.

"I think there's no question with Joe's driving and Chuck's tuning abilities that they will be competitive," said Ashley, a two-time NHRA Pro Modified champion. "I've already got a sponsor as well, but I can't say right now but you'll see a press release in January." Baker's incredible rise to Pro Modified stardom began early in 2008 when he earned an alternate invitation to compete at the NHRA Gatornationals Jegs Pro Modified Series event and drove his way from the No. 16 qualifying spot to the winner's circle. He added a second victory as a substitute driver for Roger Burgess during the NHRA Spring Nationals in Houston, Texas.

He concluded the season as the seventh ranked driver.

The team's series of choice remains to be seen with the uncertainty of the NHRA program and the lack of title sponsor for the IHRA program. Ashley hasn't ruled out a pursuit of the ADRL series.

"I don't know what's going to happen with the NHRA Pro Mod deal, I've worked for many years to keep it together," Ashley admitted. "I think that was a good deal, I'm saddened to see that it's in trouble. But I'm confident it will be pulled together, but if not the ADRL is a great opportunity. IHRA is also a good opportunity. There are plenty of opportunities out there for Pro Mod."

Returning with the team will be longtime Ashley tuner Chuck Ford, whom Ashley confirmed, has been hard at work developing new engines and superchargers in his absence from the national event scene.

Ashley is taking delivery of a new Tim McAmis Camaro next week in anticipation of a busy January test schedule.
