The second annual CompetitionPlus.com War Stories competition has been narrowed to just four of the best storytellers in drag racing competition and beginning tomorrow, the “race” will narrow the field to the two finalists.

The annual event pits sixteen of drag racing’s icons, drivers, journalists and those who have been around the sport, in a friendly competition where readers seed the field through votes and vote on the winners who are paired on an NHRA professional ladder. This is drag racing without the cars and the horsepower determined by the quality of story they tell.

The semi-final rounds begin at 4:30 AM on Monday and extend through Thursday at 5 PM, EST. The final round is scheduled for Monday, January 19.

Monday’s competition will pair two of the greatest storytellers in the game, Gary Scelzi and John Force, in a head-to-head competition that promises to bring one of the closest campaigns in the history of the competition.

The stories have already been submitted for Scelzi, he’s bringing to the line the tale of how Alan Johnson almost killed him in a private jet. Force, for his story, has quite a few interesting tales about that “rough around the edges but lovable” Scelzi.

To get to the finals, Scelzi, who has lane choice over Force due to a higher vote total from the previous round defeated Steve Earwood and then Chris Kaufmann.

Force entered the competition as the No. 1 seed and took out Don Gillespie in the first round by a mere 5 votes, the closest of any competition in the history of the competition. He then defeated Shirley Muldowney in the quarters.

On the other side of the ladder, longtime doorslammer racer Pat Musi brings another one of his hilarious practical joke, barroom clearing yarns to do battle against the Big Daddy of drag racing, Don Garlits.

Musi still holds the mark for the most votes with his first round story, a dispute with a neighbor which netted an appearance of the “People’s Court”. He continued the barrage in the second round when he told a tale about how he and another Pro Stock icon Roy Hill teamed up to strip a friend down to his birthday suit and handcuff him to an elevator. The title of that story, Me, Uncle Roy and a Naked Man in the Poconos, should give you an idea.

Musi defeated Whit Bazemore and “Waterbed” Fred Miller to reach this round in competition.

Garlits, for his part, has been a steady performer in reaching the semis. He used a solid victory in the first round over Jim Rockstad to advance to the quarters where he won a controversial match against Kenny Nowling.

An early winner was declared in the Garlits and Nowling competition because of controversy which erupted largely in part with Shirley Muldowney contesting the details of Garlits tale. Garlits was leading by a 75 – 25 margin when the race was declared final.

Musi and Garlits have brought a couple of hilarious entries for the semis with the former telling about Joey, the greatest depantser in drag racing and Garlits about crashed dragsters and flexing tubes and oh yeah, Connie Swingle.
