San Gabriel, Calif., Top Sportsman racer Rick Takahashi was alert and conscious following his rollover accident that sent him into both walls at Sonoma during eliminations of the Sonoma NHRA Nationals.
Paired against Mike Ferderer and racing in the right lane, Takahashi hung on as the back end of his King’s Hawaiian Bread ’82 Cavalier swerved and the momentum sent him head-first into the right side wall.
The car flipped and hit the left wall, where it came to rest.
The NHRA Safety Safari was at the scene immediately.
The crash pushed the left guard wall out a bit, and safety / maintenance crews worked also to repair the 12-foot section and put it back in place.
Takahashi, complaining of general soreness, was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for evaluation.
