12-1-2010 – Patrick James might be drag racing’s version of Clark Kent, the fictional character who would assume the role of Superman to fight for “truth, justice and the American Way.”
At least to one elderly gentleman in South Beach, Fla, considers James to be his Superman.
James, a veteran carburetor specialist and owner of Pro Systems, was vacationing with family in South Beach when he led police to apprehend a suspect who had moments earlier robbed the gentleman.
“I was glad that my kids were there to see that I was a doer and not one of those who dropped their heads when the man was screaming,” James said. “I was pleased that I taught my kids how to act as a human.”
James became suspicious of the individual when he first confronted the James family outside of a restaurant. He believed the confrontation a set up for the robbery. The apparent act of intimidation was warded off by James and inspired him to keep an eye on the man as they walked the sidewalk.
Moments later the man committed a robbery.
Patrick sent his family safely into a store and sprung into action trailing the suspect for three blocks taking both video and photos. The suspect apparently believed he was in the clear and stopped in a nearby park. He wasn’t.
James flagged down a policeman and showed him both the video and photos. The suspect was arrested and the stolen items returned.
Patrick doesn’t regret his actions.
“It was second nature,” Patrick said. “I think you will find most drag racers are instantaneous in their actions. I think you can take almost any racer and put them in the situation, and they would do the same thing. We are all in that same personality.”
