SUNDAY FINAL – LEE WINS HIS FIRST NHRA FUNNY CAR CROWN; LANGDON, ANDERSON SCORE #ARIZONANATS WINS

Hollywood couldn’t have written a better script.

Eighteen years to the date of Eric Medlen’s death after suffering a traumatic brain injury in a testing crash March 19, 2007, his father, John Medlen, along with his tuning protege Jonnie Lindberg, propelled Paul Lee to his first NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series Funny Car title.

Lee stopped John Force Racing’s Austin Prock in the final round of the NHRA Arizona Nationals at Firebird Motorsports Park, a final which had emotional ties to both teams. Eric Medlen was a member of JFR when he passed. The McLeod-sponsored driver ran a 4.030, 313.22, when Prock went up in smoke.

Joining Lee in victory ceremonies in the pro ranks were Shawn Langdon (Top Fuel) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock).

Lee has been a fuel Funny Car win waiting to happen for the last two seasons, finishing runner-up twice in 2024 and also winning the Pep Boys All-Star Callout title during the NHRA U.S. Nationals last Labor Day weekend.

This weekend, he entered eliminations as the No. 5 seed, and stopped Chad Green in the first round. It was sweet revenge, because at the NHRA Gatornationals earlier this month, Green beat Lee in the first round and went on to win the season-opener.

Lee took out Blake Alexander and then No. 1 qualifier Bob Tasca to reach the final.

“I think this is like a dream come true,” Lee said. “Today was just surreal. I mean, the whole pit was calm. We were calm all day. We prayed that Eric was with us, and he was. And I’m going to tell you something, this trophy is going right to John Medlen on the starting line because we are blessed to have a guy like him still in the sport and helping all our young guys learn the sport of drag racing. So, God bless John.

“And thanks to all our partners, Mainline Sales, McLeod, FTI, Gates, Redline Oil, Justice Brothers, this is for you guys. Thank you.”

An emotional John Medlen admitted he’d witnessed a day when the fastest car didn’t always win. On this day, it was the team with the most fate on its side that took home the grand prize.

“Breathtaking to me. It’s a big deal because this is the anniversary of Eric passing away this day today,” Medlen said. “And we saw more fours on that scoreboard than I ever seen in my entire life. So I think he just took his thumb and he pushed that car right into the winners circle.”

Eric Medlen’s spirit might have had a thumb on Lee’s car Sunday, but he clearly had a hand on multi-time Funny Car champion Ron Capps, who had a crash eerily reminiscent of John Force’s Virginia crash last June that left him with a traumatic brain injury.

Capps said he was very grateful for the improvements made in the wake of Eric Medlen’s passing.

“The paddings, all the stuff that Eric Medlen and Force’s accidents, and all those things over the years have thankfully been fixed and upgraded so that I could be okay right now,” Capps said after his first-round incident. “I feel fine.”

Langdon, who finished runner-up at the season opener in Gainesville, Florida, sealed the deal Sunday by winning an all-Kalitta Motorsports Top Fuel final round. It was his 28th career NHRA win, and his 18th since moving up to the nitro dragster ranks.

Langdon left on teammate and No. 1 qualifier Doug Kalitta, who had been .02 quicker than him all day, and never looked back en route to a 3.724, 330.39 run to better Kalitta’s 3.770, 325.53.

“Brian (Husen) and the team, man. I’ve been saying all along, Brian’s turned this whole team into a bunch of superstars, all-stars, and all the credit to him,” Langdon said. “He brought Adem Cave on board, but all the guys, man – all the guys have done such a fantastic job. No mistakes, giving me such a great race car. We knew going to the final, you’re running (crew chief Alan Johnson) and Doug, so what are you going to do? You got to throw down.

“Brian said, ‘We got to get this thing to go a low 70.’ I said, ‘I’ll try to be in the 50s (on reaction time),’ and that’s what we did. We called our shot a little bit. Just proud of the guys. Everybody at Kalitta Air Careers, Toyota, everybody. It’s a win-win for Connie Kalitta. Most importantly, put a smile on his face.”

Whoever said there’s no such thing as an ugly victory obviously didn’t witness the final round between Anderson and Gainesville winner Dallas Glenn.

In one of the wildest Pro Stock final rounds in recent memory, Anderson picked up his second straight Phoenix win when Glenn left before the Christmas tree was activated. Anderson, the reigning world champ, barely moved off the starting line as his car had its own trouble, lost power, and didn’t even make it to half-track.

“I’m still trying to figure out how the heck I won,” Anderson said. “When you go into a final against Dallas, you know he’s going to be double .00 (reaction time), and you’re just on edge trying to leave the starting line. I saw some sort of flash of light, and I let the clutch out and redlighted, but obviously that flash of light was Dallas’ red light coming on first – so he redlighted before I did under the ‘first or worst’ (rule).

“My car made it about a foot and it shut right off, and now I’m going to have to sit in front of the grandstands and want to sink underneath the seat, because I just redlighted, and you just threw the race away and I wondered why Dallas didn’t go by me. I reached up and I’m trying to restart the car, and it won’t start. Something went wrong. I don’t know if the ignition blew out on it or what happened, but I redlighted, and somehow Dallas did something worse than I did. So, crazy final round, but, like they say, a win is a win.”

Anderson got past Fernando Cuadra Jr., Eric Latino and Aaron Stanfield, setting up the third straight Anderson-Glenn showdown dating back to last year’s NHRA Finals.

Glenn, who won the opener in Gainesville, defeated David Cuadra, Greg Stanfield and No. 1 qualifier Matt Hartford to reach the final round for the 29th time in his career.

SATURDAY #2FAST2TASTY – CAPPS, LANGDON, JEGGIE WIN FIRST #2FAST2TASTY CHALLENGE OF 2025

Ron Capps won the first Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge of the year at Firebird Motorsports Park, defeating Matt Hagan in the final round of Funny Car. The race took place in front of a sellout crowd during the 40th annual NHRA Arizona Nationals, the third straight Saturday sellout.

Capps completed the race in 3.989 seconds at 318.24 mph in his NAPA Auto Care Toyota GR Supra. This victory is a welcome achievement for Capps, who did not win a national event in 2024, but began the 2025 season with a runner-up showing at the Gatornationals.

“I’m very excited myself, but I’m more excited for ‘Guido’ (crew chief Dean Antonelli]) and the team,” Capps said. “Last year was a rebuilding of sorts. … It’s fun to win the Mission Challenge because it’s really brought out a lot of fun on Saturdays.”

In Top Fuel, Shawn Langdon defeated Tony Stewart with a run of 3.805 seconds at 315.19 mph in his Kalitta Air Careers dragster. Langdon, the defending event winner, qualified third in the 14-car field, and will face Scott Palmer in the opening round as he attempts to sweep the weekend.

“There are some tracks that just seem to work well with what you have, and Phoenix … is one of those,” Langdon said. “I didn’t do a good job in the final. I clicked it a little bit early, which shows how much stronger the car really is.”

Pro Stock driver Jeg Coughlin Jr. utilized holeshots to secure his win in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, including a final-round victory over Dallas Glenn. Coughlin, a five-time world champion, recorded a time of 6.583 seconds at 208.88 mph in his SCAG Power Equipment/Outlaw Light Beer Chevrolet Camaro.

“I think that was a big shot in the arm for our entire team,” Coughlin said. “Pro Stock is so close. … Fortunately, we made some strides today.”

SATURDAY QUALIFYING – KALITTA, TASCA, HARTFORD RETAIN TOP SPOTS IN FRONT OF SELLOUT ARIZONA CROWD

Friday night’s fast session effectively set the field for Sunday’s eliminations at the NHRA Arizona Nationals hosted by Firebird Motorsports Park. Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Bob Tasca III (Funny Car), and Matt Hartford (Pro Stock) will roll into race day as the No. 1 seed in their respective divisions during the second of 20 races on the Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season.

Race officials announced the crowd on hand for the final day of qualifying was the third-straight Saturday sellout for the facility located outside of Phoenix, Arizona.

Kalitta nailed down the No. 1 qualifier – his first since July last year in Sonoma – on the strength of his 3.688-second run at 330.39 mph. It’s the 60th No. 1 qualifier of his storied career.

“We were pretty happy with that run last night,” Kalitta said. “Alan and Mac (crew chief Alan Johnson and assistant crew chief Mac Savage) and my whole SealMaster Toyota team got a good run in last night. My car has been going down the track every time so the SealMaster team is getting it done. I have to say, they’ve really done a nice job with this facility (Firebird Motorsports Park). The track is nice and smooth so hats off to everybody that was involved in the repaving.

“It’s Alan Johnson’s birthday today. It ended up being a pretty good day. We certainly appreciate Duke, Rhonda and Allison (Thorson) with SealMaster coming on board this weekend along with Toyota, Mac Tools, Revchem and all our supporters. So far, so good. We’ll see how Sunday goes. Like all these races, everybody’s running close so you have to get up on the wheel and make it happen on Sunday.”

Brittany Force qualified second with a run of 3.705, 331.69, while Shawn Langdon took third with a time of 3.706, 331.85.

Tasca claimed the No. 1 qualifier position for the 19th time in his career after a run of 3.863 seconds at 333.82 mph in his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Mustang. Tasca, seeking his first victory of the season, will open eliminations against Jon Capps.

“It’s going to be a stacked group out there, but this car can go up and down a hot or cool track,” Tasca said. “We were aggressive (today), trying to find the limit of where we thought the track was to kind of set us up for tomorrow. I think the guys will take that data and compensate for it tomorrow, and we think that 3.92 (from Q1) was really in the sweet spot for the heat.”

Austin Prock qualified second with a time of 3.883 seconds, while #2Fast2Tasty Challenge winner Ron Capps secured third with a run of 3.912, 323.50.

Hartford, the local Pro Stock favorite, held onto the No. 1 spot in his Total Seal Chevrolet Camaro with a Friday run of 6.509 seconds at 208.20 mph. Hartford is aiming for his first victory at his home track and will face Brandon Foster in the opening round.

“When we unloaded off the trailer here in Phoenix, we thought we had a pretty good setup,” Hartford said. “Even though the scoreboard didn’t show any good numbers for us today, that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t beneficial.

“There’s nothing more that we want to do than win this race at our home track. We’ve got a runner-up here (in 2019) and our goal is to take the hardware. When I lost in the finals to Jeg (Coughlin Jr.) a few years back, it was crushing, because it would have been awesome to win, but we’ve won from No. 1 before, and our goal is to do it again.”

Greg Anderson qualified second with a run of 6.512, 208.91, while Cory Reed secured the third position with a time of 6.516, also at 208.91.

Eliminations for the 40th annual NHRA Arizona Nationals start at 11 a.m. MDT Sunday at Firebird Motorsports Park.

FRIDAY QUALIFYING – TASCA BACKS UP MR. SPEED MONIKER WITH PHOENIX PROVISIONAL; KALITTA, HARTFORD SECURE NO. 1

Two weeks ago, Bob Tasca took to the airwaves of the NHRA Gatornationals broadcast to point out to the motorsports community that IndyCar was not the fastest racing on the planet. Friday night at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he also reminded the Funny Car contingent that he’s the man capable of running speeds much faster than the IndyCar contingent, as well as his fellow competitors.

Tasca was also quick, covering the Firebird Motorsports Park 1,000-foot course in 3.863 seconds at 333.82 miles per hour. If the run holds through Saturday’s final rounds, it will be his 19th No. 1 qualifier of his career.

Joining Tasca atop Friday’s provisional fields were Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel) and Matt Hartford (Pro Stock).

Tasca tapped into the same energy of the past few years where his Motorcraft Ford thrived equally on hot and cool racetracks.

“What I love about what we did today is we did it on a hot track, and we did it on a cool track,” Tasca said. “You are going to see hot tracks for the rest of the weekend, so I’m pretty confident I’ll see you guys [in the media] tomorrow night. But the truth is we needed that first run was more important than the second run.

“Todd [Okuhara] and Aaron [Brooks] really worked hard over the winter making some changes to this race car, trying to get more consistency. Clearly, it’s showed in testing. Gainesville was kind of an anomaly, man. We had some tough weather, tough track conditions in that second round. Unfortunately, we had … it was an assembly issue with the clutch. We were dead at hello there. But the good news is we got a car that is going up and down, hot and cool tracks.”

Right on Tasca’s heels are the defending NHRA Funny Car champion Austin Prock [3.883] and Jack Beckman [3.895]. Jim Campbell sits on the Funny Car bubble with a 5.058, 183.52.

Kalitta, whose last No. 1 qualifying effort came last season at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals, went to the top after Friday’s two sessions with his run of 3.688 at 330 miles an hour. If that holds, it will be Kalitta’s 59th low-qualifier effort.

“I was pretty happy with that at the end,” Kalitta said. “I have to say, though, they’ve really done a nice job with this facility. The track is nice and smooth. It seems real nice. So hats off to the guys and everybody involved there.”

Kalitta was the only nitro racer in the 3.60s on the first day, finishing ahead of Brittany Force’s 3.705 and teammate Shawn Langdon’s 3.706, 331.85.

Hartford made a quantum leap in the Q2 session of Pro Stock, jumping from No. 10 into the lead with a 6.509 at 208 miles an hour, setting him up provisionally for his first No. 1 of the year and the fifth in his career.

“This is our home track,” Hartford said. “It’s Total Seal country, and to be able to do that in front of friends and family, and then all the people from Total Seal is just incredible. We’re going to have a lot of people here tomorrow who represent about 175 of our closest friends, and they are all going to want to know how we did last night. So it’s going to be nice to say that we’re No. 1 going into tomorrow, and the weather conditions look similar. Not as good, but you never know. But tonight was just the best conditions you can get for Phoenix that we’ve seen in probably a decade.”

Hartford sits atop a logjam of KB Titan cars with defending NHRA Pro Stock champion No. 2 with a 6.512, Cory Reed 6.516, and Gainesville winner Dallas Glenn at No. 4 with a 6.520.

Brandon Foster sets on the bubble with a 6.590, 206.48 lap.

Qualifying continues at 11:30 a.m. PDT on Saturday at the NHRA Arizona Nationals at Firebird Motorsports Park.

2025 NHRA ARIZONA NATIONALS – EVENT RESULTS

The NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series returns to action March 27-30 with the 65th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip.
