STORYTELLERS FEATURING BILLY MEYER - "ALL THIS OVER PARKING TICKETS?"

Storytellers, the entertaining series created by the producers of Legends: The Series, allows drag racing's legends to tell their stories of the good old days for drag racing.

In this episode, Billy Meyer tells about the time a fender bender with a Pro Stock team ended up getting him in hot water with NHRA and believe it or not, the FBI. It's the class story of alcohol, weapons, violence and a former President. Folks, you just can't make up stuff this good, as it's told by Waco Willie.

CLASSIC VIDEO: 33 YEARS AGO, DRAG RACING HISTORY WAS MADE

The year was 1988 and NHRA was engaged in a full-scale war, the likes of which hadn't been seen since the IHRA became a formidable force in drag racing. Texas Motorplex owner Billy Meyer had just purchased the series from Larry Carrier and moved it to Waco, Texas, and likewise pulled his crown jewel of a race track out of the NHRA and put it in IHRA.

At the time there were milestones on the verge of being broken, and one of those was the first quarter-mile four-second pass. On this weekend, in 1988, the mark fell.

ENCORE LEGENDS: THE SERIES - THE LEGEND OF SHIRLEY MULDOWNEY

Drag racing boasts a diversity of participation that is the envy of every other motor racing discipline on the planet. But, how diverse would the sport be today had there never been a woman with the fiery determination of Shirley “Cha Cha” Muldowney?

While Shirley Shahan, Judy Lilly and others had broken drag racing’s gender barrier long before Muldowney left the streets of Schenectady, N.Y., they earned their NHRA hardware in cars that could have been driven to and from church, school or the corner store.

When Muldowney burst upon the scene in the early 1970s, though, she wasn’t interested in driving a Dodge or Ford or Chevrolet. She was hell bent on mashing the pedal on a Top Fuel dragster, a purpose-built race car that even in 1973 was capable of zero to 240 mile per hour acceleration in less than six seconds.
