The 1984 NHRA Gatornationals was pivotal in the future of drag racing. Aerodynamics and corporate involvement began to push the sports to a new level. The race to the 260 mile per hour zone incorporated speed merchants in both dragsters and funny cars.
You'll see the legends of the sport such as Joe Amato, and Kenny Bernstein battle it out to be the fastest drag racer in NHRA competition. There's also a bit of controversy in Pro Stock with a Dodge Daytona, as well as the emergence of the Professor of Pro Stock Warren Johnson.

The old NHRA races recorded off of the original syndicated broadcasts are extra special.
There was one thing you could always count on when it came to racing at National Trail Raceway located outside of Columbus, Ohio. More times than not it would rain on your high horsepower parade.
The NHRA recognized the true meaning of sideways rain during the 1981 event which was rained out and returned the following weekend where it rained more through severe thunderstorms. While today's drag racing coverage is accustomed to video at night. Back then, producer Diamond P, did the best they could with the resources available.

Funny Car design and technology was at a crossroads in 1986, and two of drag racing's premiere Funny Car racers knew it. In this excerpt from a Diamond P video production, the late Steve Evans along with drag racing legends Don Prudhomme and Kenny Bernstein discuss their thoughts related to a futuristic rendering from iconic drag racing artist Kenny Bernstein.
It's a amazing, just two years later Bernstein would unveil his "Batmobile" Funny Car design, and in essence jump start the space race for aerodynamics in Funny Car racing. This short clip is an entertaining piece to watch.

Travel back in time to 40 years ago, when the NHRA schedule expanded to 11 races. However, regardless of how many races NHRA staged in a season, there was only one race no other could hold a candle too -- The U.S. Nationals.
The 1981 U.S. Nationals represented a change toward what would become the future as 32-car Top Fuel fields were replaced with 16. The Funny Cars were starting to spread their wings and fly, and of course the Pro Stock category featured its clash of titans, as Bob Glidden and Lee Shepherd continued their war from 1980.
Enjoy an hour of entertainment, complete with commercials from a race which has proven to be like no other over the decades.

Travel back in time to the inaugural NHRA Southern Nationals in Commerce, Ga., just outside of Atlanta. With the uncertainty of the future of the track, let's travel back in time to the first one.
This event was the first sanctioned after the facility made the switch from IHRA sanction to NHRA.
The quality is a little rough but good enough to appreciate this blast from the past. In addition to the great racing, there's a glimpse of the nighttime qualifying from the original April 1981 event.

Travel back to the mid 1980s when the show Hidden Heroes followed some of drag racing's iconic names. The show, broadcast on the Nashville Network was a Diamond P production and took the cameras behind-the-scenes to introduce race fans to some of the sport's more dynamic individuals.
