DRAG RACER ON AIRCRAFT CARRIER

beal_welch.jpgChuck Beal and Brandon Welch of independent Nitro Funny Car team Beal
Racing were treated to an all-access stay aboard the US Navy’s aircraft
carrier USS Abraham Lincoln August 2nd and 3rd.  The trip included an
exclusive look at the inner-workings of a fully functioning aircraft
carrier, where the two learned how to bring large-scale leadership and
teamwork to drag racing.

Invited on the trip by Rear Admiral Len Hering, Commander Navy Region
Southwest, team owner Beal and driver Welch flew on a C-2A Greyhound
from NAS North Island in San Diego to the USS Abraham Lincoln, which
was conducting training in international waters off the coast of
Mexico.  The two, along with a group of a dozen community and business
leaders experienced an arrested tailhook landing aboard the carrier,
where the plane came to a dead stop from 140mph in only 2 seconds.

From there, the group toured all corners of the ship to see the amount
of organization, training and resources required to run a floating
American airstrip anywhere in the world.

throughout September," states Old World Industries Brand Manager Brian

anniversary as a quality American made product and its hot roddin'
heritage than through NHRA championship drag racing and the US
Nationals.  Its exciting to have PEAK back on a Top Fuel dragster, the
ultimate hot rod!"

MAPLE GROVE SURFACE REWORKED

An unimpeachable source
has confirmed with Torco’s CompetitionPlus.com that the NHRA has worked around
the clock in preparing the Maple Grove Raceway surface and the work appears to
have attained the desired results.

DRAG RACING IN AFRICA

If
all you’re interested in are elapsed times, you can stop reading right
now.  But if you’re a speed demon, stick
with me.  It was round five of the South
African National Drag Racing Championships, at Tarlton International Raceway,
and the speeds were wicked.  How about
14.86 at 148 in an old Mazda pick-up, one so tiny that it nearly flops over
anytime anyone with a gut gets into it?
Or 12.20 at 172 in a ’72 Camaro?
Or 8.90 at 242 in a hot rod Bimmer (that’s right, a 320i with a blown
Chevy small block)?  Or, quickest and
fastest of the day, 6.94 at 330 in an alcohol funny car?  Monster speeds, all right, but I’ll come
clean. We’re talking kilometers per hour.

This
is drag racing in Africa, and kph comes with
the territory.  But it’s still a
quarter-mile, and racin’s racin’.  Any
American drag racer with a pocket calculator would have felt right at home.

Sanctioned
drag racing in South Africa
goes back to the 1950s, but, due to FIA rules, national championship events had
to wait until the country had at least two first class facilities.  One of them is Tarlton, which Mick van
Rensburg built in 1977.  Besides wanting
to give the sport a boost, he needed a place to run his alcohol and top fuel
dragsters and his jet car.  While his sons
have taken the keys to the family funmobiles - the dragster, funny car, and Pro
Mod - Mick still makes exhibition passes in the jet car.  At round five of this year’s national
championship, Mick was the perfect host, blasting his jet car down the track at
well over 200 mph, despite having to feather the throttle.

NEXT CRAZE? 100-FOOT DRAGS

It’s the latest craze on the outskirts of drag racing’s
radar screen. Various car enthusiasts are lining up for the 100-foot drags.

CORY MAC - "READY TO BE SPOILER"

cory_mac_01.jpgHe’s always been a realist, so Cory McClenathan recognizes that it would take a
virtual miracle for him to pile up enough points during this weekend’s Toyo
Tires Nationals to move into the top eight in Top Fuel points.

It is the
17th, and last, event in the opening phase of NHRA’s Countdown to the
Championship. Sunday evening at Maple Grove Raceway, the door officially shuts
on the 2007 title aspirations of drivers below eighth place.

“It comes
down to our FRAM dragster winning the race or going to the finals and having the
two drivers ahead of us and a couple behind us have bad weekends before we have
a good chance of getting in,” said McClenathan.  “But it’s not in my mind set to
make the top eight, especially with the changes we’ve gone through in the last
two weeks.

“We’d like to be in the points deal, but realistically, what
we are shooting for is to run as good as we can and go testing at Indianapolis
(O’Reilly Raceway Park) next week so we can get ready for the last six races,
including the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Indy (Aug. 31-Sept. 3), and begin
preparing for the 2008 season.”

McClenathan was pleased with the
performance of his new team in its first appearance at Brainerd, Minn., last
week.

HAROLD DENTON - #17 MMPS ALL-TIME

mmps_30_logo_220.jpgWhen the IHRA launched their mountain motor concept of Pro
Stock during the 1977 Winter Nationals at Darlington, South Carolina, Harold
Denton was not sold on the long-term success of the plan. Thirty years later,
he said it was one of the things that helped propel his drag racing career.

Denton will be the first to admit that he never expected the format to catch
on.
“I really didn’t,” Denton said. “It just seemed like a backyard kind of thing,
like sandlot baseball. I never believed it would turn into what it is. It was a
time for the country boys to shine.”

Denton, now retired from driving, etched his name in the history books by
winning that very first mountain motor Pro Stock event. Fourteen years later he
would return to the same track to achieve another milestone, becoming the
first-ever Pro Stock driver into the six-second zone while driving Jim Ruth’s
Party Time Pontiac.

NEFF “CLOSE TO GOING SEPARATE WAYS”

The
Mike Neff – Don Schumacher – John Force Racing Scenario has all the makings of
a good soap opera. Sources indicate the arrangement between Neff and
Schumacher, with the veteran tuner now serving in an advisory role, may not
make it beyond this weekend’s event at Reading, Pennsylvania.

Schumacher
had revised Neff’s status from that of crew chief on Gary Scelzi’s Dodge
Charger to
an advisory role prior to last weekend’s event at Brainerd, Minnesota. This
precautionary move was reportedly made to ensure that co-crew chiefs Todd
Okuhara and Phil Shuler could adequately handle the added responsibilities of
tuning for both Scelzi and his teammate Jack Beckman.

A
semifinal finish by Scelzi and several strong runs by both cars put the writing
on the wall for Neff.

“I
really need to talk to Don to see what we are going to do from this point on,”
Neff said. “Don has been really good to me throughout this whole thing. There’s
no animosity between us. I just don’t see it working through the season.”
