SUNDAY FINAL - IT'S A JOHN FORCE SHOWDOWN IN FUNNY CAR AS PROCK, BROWN, STANFIELD, ARANA SCORE READING WINS

If the Funny Car field hasn't realized it yet, they have been hustled by a so-called rookie intent on winning every accolade in the class, including a series championship.

Austin Prock, in the Mission Foods Countdown to the Championship opener, secured his sixth victory this season, stopping teammate Jack Beckman in the final round of the Pep Boys NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway.

Joining them in the winner's circle was past champion Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Aaron Stanfield (Pro Stock), and Hector Arana Jr. (Pro Stock Motorcycle).

Prock recorded a 3.896-second pass at 332.51 mph in his Chevrolet Camaro SS, beating Beckman's 3.951 at 330.88. The victory gives Prock a 10th career win and strengthens his points lead by 86, a little over four rounds, over Bob Tasca III with five races remaining.

“It feels great to rack up some points and get a little bit of a gap over second again. It definitely feels good,” Prock said. “This is the best way you can start out the Countdown – No. 1 qualifier, we got points almost every round and the car was flying today, and we ended up holding another Wally. Kudos to this Cornwell Tools team for allowing me to do this.

“We saw the ladder last night and said we have two cars capable of meeting in the final round, and that was the goal today, and we executed perfectly. Jack drove his tail off today, and I'm really proud of him. He's getting comfortable and becoming lethal in that car. He was mowing the tree down, and that thing runs as well as any of these cars out here. It's great to see him and the team having success right off the bat like they are.”

Prock advanced through eliminations by knocking out Mike Smith, Chad Green, and Tasca before sealing the win.

Beckman reached his first final since returning to Brainerd, defeating Joe Morrison, J.R. Todd, and Alexis DeJoria.

Brown's Top Fuel win was his fourth of the season and came at the expense of Shawn Langdon. His run of 3.798 seconds at 327.27 mph edged out Langdon and moved him within one point of series leader Justin Ashley.

“Going into raceday, we knew we were going to have something, but the track got a little bit trickier than we thought it was. It was medieval out there. A lot of people were spinning the tires, but we made it far enough down the track,” Brown said. “Brian Corradi, Mark (Oswald), all of our Matco boys gave me a car that went the distance. We were just better than everybody that we raced at that time. When we got to the final, we knew it was going to be a monster matchup.

“I knew Shawn was going to run about the same E.T. and it was going to be who can leave the starting line. Lo and behold, I was able to keep my head down and we got a little bit of an advantage right there and the car outran him. It was one of those deals, we got the win and the car was smooth down the racetrack. It felt really good when that win light came on; we needed a start like that if we wanted to be in this race to win this championship.”

Brown's road to his 78th career win included wins over Jasmine Salinas, Tony Schumacher, and Dan Mercier.

The Top Fuel points standings are incredibly close as Langdon's runner-up finish pulled him within six points of Ashley.

The Stanfield Pro Stock hot streak continued to get hotter as he earned his fifth win of the season after defeating teammate Erica Enders on a holeshot. Stanfield's pass of 6.569 seconds at 209.26 mph pushed him into the points lead for the first time this year.

It feels great. Momentum is real,” Stanfield said. “Things have been rolling our way, and we've been getting those round wins when we need them to go our way. We did our job today, Erica and I and all our guys. We put both of our JHG/Melling cars in the final round there, and that was the goal.

“When you start out No. 2, you know you've got a shot. I know the equipment I'm in, and I know how hungry my guys are to win. We definitely have a shot here; we just need to keep this momentum that we've got rolling.”

Stanfield now leads Dallas Glenn by nine points, with Enders 35 points back

Enders reached the final after victories over Mason McGaha, Matt Hartford, and Greg Anderson.

In a break from the Gaige Herrera and Matt Smith slugfest, Arana snuck up on the two with his first win of the season. He earned his first Pro Stock Motorcycle win of the season and 19th career victory, defeating Richard Gadson with a 6.839-second run at 198.38 mph.

Arana, who also defeated Gaige Herrera in the semifinals, moves to fourth in the points standings.

"We got everything together, and here we are in the winner's circle," Arana said. "Now it's time to turn it on for the rest of the Countdown."

Gadson reached the final round for the second time this season, while Herrera remains in the points lead, 17 points ahead of Matt Smith.

The NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series continues Sept. 20-22 with the NHRA Carolina Nationals at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte.

SATURDAY QUALIFYING - ASHLEY, PROCK, GLENN, HERRERA QUALIFY NO. 1 AT READING

Justin Ashley secured his first No. 1 qualifier of the 2024 NHRA season on Saturday at Maple Grove Raceway during the 39th annual Pep Boys NHRA Nationals. He led the Top Fuel category in front of a sellout crowd.

Austin Prock (Funny Car), Dallas Glenn (Pro Stock), and Gaige Herrera (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also earned top qualifying spots at the 15th of 20 races in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. This event marks the first of six in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs.

Ashley’s 3.713-second pass at 333.49 mph from Friday in his Scag Power Equipment/Toyota dragster held up through Saturday’s qualifying. The former Rookie of the Year, currently second in points, will face Smax Smith in Sunday’s eliminations.

“For the most part, today’s focus was going to be on getting ready for raceday and collecting those bonus points. What we saw today was probably similar conditions to what we’ll see tomorrow,” Ashley said. “I think the team learned a lot, they did a great job to be able to collect a total of five bonus points today was critical for us. Tomorrow is a brand new day. It’s really important to qualify No. 1, but at the same time the competition is just so good right now, anything can happen.

“Those bonus points are very important. It’s not everything, but it does add up. You collect a point here and there and together, they could mean a lot.”

Tony Schumacher took the second spot with a 3.733-second pass at 328.70 mph, while points leader Doug Kalitta also posted a 3.733 at 328.70 to qualify third.

In Funny Car, Prock continued his strong season by grabbing his 11th No. 1 qualifier in 15 races with a 3.849-second run at 338.43 mph. Prock, who won at Maple Grove in 2022, will face Mike Smith in eliminations as he chases his sixth victory of the year.

“These guys are giving me an outstanding car,” Prock said. “All I can do is screw up qualifying and I’ve been doing an okay job of not doing that. My dad, Thomas, Nate, this whole Cornwell Tools team are pretty incredible this season.

“We just have to do what we’ve been doing all year long. We have to execute exactly how we did all season long, change nothing and see how the cards fall. We’re racing lights out right now and I feel like we’re making the best runs we’re capable of making consistently. If we all do our best, that should be good enough to win.”

Alexis DeJoria qualified second in Funny Car with a 3.867-second pass at 336.40 mph, and Jack Beckman took third with a 3.869 at 330.80.

In Pro Stock, points leader Dallas Glenn surged to the top spot with a 6.530-second pass at 209.43 mph in his RAD Torque Systems Chevrolet Camaro. Glenn, who struggled in last year’s Countdown, will race Kenny Delco in the first round of eliminations.

“Yesterday, I didn’t feel like we made that great of runs even though we were near the top and got bonus points. They were decent runs, the engine was running good and everything, but we were struggling in 60-feet. I knew if we figured out that out, we would be good,” Glenn said. “Today, when the track is a little worse and the air is just a touch worse, you go up there and as long as it 60-foots, we should be able to be really close to it. We went up there and made a really nice run.

“I feel like everybody counts all the little points, especially when you reset them with six races to go and you have this mad rush to try to go rounds and get wins. It really matters when you’re in the playoffs. It’s really important here at the end of the season that we do well, so I’m going to try to stay extra focused, try to just kick it up and grab that little bit of extra gear that I feel like we have, focus a little bit harder, and see if we can squeeze a couple wins here in the last six races.”

Erica Enders qualified second with a 6.535-second pass at 210.34 mph, while Greg Anderson qualified third at 6.537 seconds and 209.23 mph.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, defending series champion Gaige Herrera posted a 6.743-second run at 200.20 mph on his RevZilla/Mission Foods/Vance & Hines Suzuki to take the No. 1 spot. It’s Herrera’s sixth top qualifier of the season and his 20th overall.

“We were very pleased with that. We’re happy with that going into tomorrow,” Herrera said. “Conditions will be pretty much the same, maybe a little cooler. I’m glad to get No. 1 qualifying spot. We’re trying to get as many points as we can because now it’s going to be a lot tighter.

“Last night we stayed and looked at data for a good bit and came up with a game plan for today and it paid off. We kind of threw the kitchen sink at it, and it worked. That doesn’t always work, so that gave me confidence in the machine. It’s going to be good for racing tomorrow, and hopefully I have a very fast and consistent motorcycle all day.”

Matt Smith qualified second with a 6.795-second run at 200.50 mph, while Richard Gadson finished third at 6.806 seconds and 198.35 mph.

FRIDAY RESULTS - PROCK, ASHLEY, ENDERS, M. SMITH SET THE PACE IN DAY ONE READING

Austin Prock, Funny Car points leader, recorded the fastest run of his career Friday at Maple Grove Raceway, taking the provisional No. 1 spot at the Pep Boys NHRA Nationals.

Prock stopped the timers at 3.849 seconds at 338.43 mph in his Camaro Funny Car.

Justin Ashley (Top Fuel), Erica Enders (Pro Stock), and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also hold provisional No. 1 qualifying spots at the 15th race of the 2024 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. This race marks the start of the Countdown to the Championship, the six-race playoff that determines season champions.

“That was some classic Reading drag racing right there,” Prock said. “This place is always fast, lot of trees around here, the air is always pretty mongo and they gave us a great racetrack tonight. That was pretty stout to go No. 1 again and run a career-best speed. It definitely got all of it. I’m really proud of this team, and it was a heck of a way to start the playoffs today.”

Prock’s pass, his career-best speed, was just shy of the track record and adds to his strong season, where he has already secured 10 No. 1 qualifiers and leads the standings with five wins. He enters the playoffs fresh off a victory at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis.

“I knew it left hard, and just past the Christmas tree I felt the tire just a hair and it cleared up. I probably got about 200 feet out and I started feeling it trying to make that move inside and I had quite a bit of wheel turning left all the way down the (track). When I tossed the laundry, my brother (Thomas) got on the radio, they were going nuts and that was really special. It was great to hear and the team is really proud of that today.”

Alexis DeJoria enjoyed a strong pair of qualifying sessions, qualifying second with a 3.867 at 336.40, while Prock’s JFR teammate, Jack Beckman, is third after his pass of 3.869 at 330.80

Ashley, who lives on New York’s Long Island, considers Maple Grove Raceway his new hometrack ever since Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ closed, put on quite the show thundering to the provisional No. 1 spot in Top Fuel with a 3.713-second run at 333.49 mph in his Scag Power Equipment/Toyota dragster. If it holds, it would be Ashley’s first No. 1 qualifier of the season and sixth of his career.

“I think we did a good job during Q1 of positioning ourselves to a point where we could be a little more aggressive in Q2. That was the key,” Ashley said. “When you go out there that first run, you want to set that baseline so you have the ability to be a little more aggressive and go after that No. 1 spot. We stayed after Indy, we did some testing, we did some testing after Brainerd.

“The whole team has just been chipping away at it for this reason, for this very moment. We want to make sure we’re prepared when the Countdown comes. It’s day one of the Countdown, but we feel good about where we’re at with everything. Maybe it will hold tomorrow, maybe it won’t, but those three bonus points were critical.”

Tony Schumacher made a big jump to second after going 3.733 at 328.70 and points leader Doug Kalitta is third with a run of 3.736 at 335.73.

Enders, the defending Pro Stock world champion, led her class with a 6.535-second run at 210.34 mph. She seeks her first win since the season opener in Gainesville, which would mark her 50th career victory.

“I’m feeling confident after Indy,” Enders said. “We didn’t win, our team went to the finals and raced each other, I lost in the semis and I was .014 on the tree,” Enders said. “I feel like my driving has been a lot better and we have a great racecar. We’ve had one all year.

“We put a new bullet in for today and we went right to the top right off the trailer, and it held through the second session. That’s extremely encouraging. Everybody wants to start the Countdown off on the right foot. If you get in too big of a hole it’s hard to dig yourself out. There’s a lot of racing to go, a lot of points to accumulate, and a lot of tough competition but definitely the right foot and I’m proud to be there.”

Greg Anderson moved to second with a run of 6.537 at 209.23 and points leader Dallas Glenn went to third after going 6.540 at 208.91.

Smith, aiming for his fifth Pro Stock Motorcycle No. 1 qualifier of the season, ran 6.801 seconds at 199.49 mph. Smith, a six-time world champion, won in Sonoma earlier this season and has his sights set on a seventh championship.

“The first run was pretty good and the second run, we should have run .79, maybe a high .78 but the bike got stuck in fourth gear out there,” Smith said. “All in all, we had a great run and I can’t say enough. We got everything turned up. We got the high-side rev limiter turned way up or I’d have hit the limiter there. It’s one of them deals, it’s the Countdown. We’re going for seven [championships], and we’ve got to throw everything we’ve got at it.

“We brought everything we’ve got for our Denso Buell and we’re going to keep digging, try to keep going, and we’ll see. I think we might put another motor in for tomorrow. We have a brand-new piece that’s really, really good on the dyno and I need to get some tune-ups on it and try to get it right for the Countdown.”

Points leader and defending world champion Gaige Herrera is currently second after going 6.804 at 198.55 and his teammate, Richard Gadson, is in third with a run of 6.807 at 197.45.

Qualifying continues at noon Saturday at Maple Grove Raceway.
