One of NHRA’s original seven national events, this race is steeped in legend:
a historic facility, some of the sport’s most knowledgeable (and definitely most
boisterous) fans, and a score of dramatic moments.

The Summer Nationals had a huge
overall entry of Sportsman racers but this weekend the headliners were the
ultimate in doorslammers - the Pro Modified cars running in their third round
of the MSA (Motor Sports Association) British Drag Racing Championship. The
220mph machines had seven British entries and one Dutch competitor but had to
contend with copious amounts of rain that was deluging the country during the
past week. It more or less wiped out the Saturday qualifying day allowing all
competitors just a one shot qualifier on Sunday morning.
In the Pro Modified class Danny Cockerill driving his 526 cubic inch
motored Chevy Bel Air sat in pole position with a fine 6.385/226.26mph clocking
with the remainder of the pack stretching all the way down to the wild but
slowed up 12.131/73 from Gordon Appleton’s Chevy Camaro then the DNQ (did not
qualify) from Holland’s usual strong contender Marc Meihuizen in his Chevy
Coupe.

Sprawling multipurpose Heartland Park Topeka has been a Midwest favorite since
it opened in 1989, but its dragstrip has gained the majority of headlines. The
event, originally in the fall, has featured numerous record performances, the
most significant of which was the shattering of the four-second and 300-mph
barriers in Funny Car in 1993.

The Pro Modified Racing Association season opener was an interesting event with
several firsts.
A record number of Pro Modifieds were entered for the first
race of the 2007 PMRA tour, held over the Victoria Day weekend racing at Toronto
Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario.
The top four qualifiers were taken
out in round one of eliminations.
The final round was between two US-based teams, each with
a Canadian engine building-program.
The race winner was the tenth different winner in as many
PMRA events since the series was started.

The largest car count in the history of three-year-old Motor Mile
Dragway in Radford, VA, made for some great racing in the track's Mean
16 event. The new format that splits the 16 qualifiers into a top and a
bottom half was a great hit among the competitors.
Because of the number of cars attempting to qualify for the 16
spots, track officials also added a third 8-car bracket as a
consolation race.
In addition to the Mean 16 and consolation races, Matt Hagan and Mike
Janis provided a best 2 out of 3 match race for the Saturday crowd.
