The Southeast Gassers Association returned to Shadyside Dragway for the Shelby Nationals on April 5, presenting several shocking moments for fans in attendance. This event, part of SEGA’s 2025 championship season, was the first of two visits to the historic facility.

The A/Gas category experienced dramatic turns, starting with number one qualifier Ben Christopher, whose gasser suffered mechanical failure during his round one burnout. Unable to race, Christopher watched as Chris Whitley advanced, leading to his visible frustration over the unexpected breakage.

Round two brought anticipated matchups, including one between Leslie Horne and Greg Stelse. After Stelse’s engine issues prompted Horne to lend him a powerplant, Stelse emerged victorious, stating, “That was a good win for me.”

However, it was ultimately Barry Lynn and Chase Howard who advanced to the A/Gas final. Lynn took a bye in the semifinals after defeating Chris Whitley, while Howard qualified by besting Doyle Lynn and Kenneth Phillips.

In a surprising twist, neither final competitor was the day’s fastest. Although Chase edged out Lynn in qualifying times, it was Lynn’s red light that sealed Howard’s victory, allowing him to clock a personal best of 5.33 seconds. “We finally got us another one at our home track!” Howard exclaimed.

In B/Gas, Micheal Oden won his match against Brilee Stott, but fell short against top qualifier Ken Rainwater in the semifinals. Rainwater ultimately defeated Ted McKee in the final, claiming his first win since the 2021 season.

Jerren Perdue built on his season opener success by qualifying first in C/Gas with a 6.11 seconds run. However, it was Ernie Smith who advanced to the final, facing Tim Hall, the two-time defending champion, whose AMC Rambler took the win despite mechanical challenges.

In Super Stock, Jerry Dean defeated Kenny Phillips, extending his winning streak and showcasing his mastery in the class with a half-second margin. Dean noted that while he feels lucky, his success is attributed to hard work and teamwork.

A/FX and H/Gas also made their championship debuts, with Allen Platt defeating Robbie Walden in an emotional A/FX final. Platt, driving a replica of his late father’s car, declared, “I live for this!”

In H/Gas, Robert Fraizer claimed victory over Doug Loudermilk, winning for a second consecutive event. Shadyside’s packed crowd witnessed a thrilling display of racing, highlighting the unpredictable nature of SEGA events.

Fans can catch the next round of the Southeast Gassers Association at Holiday Raceway in Woodstock, Alabama, on May 2-3.
