KALITTA EARNS 600TH ROUND WIN

 

On the same track where Doug Kalitta won drag racing's famous tie drag race, he recently scored another milestone in his storied drag racing career. 

Kalitta earned his 600th career round win as he advanced to the Top Fuel semi-finals at the Lucas Oil NHRA Southern Nationals at the Atlanta Dragway, on Sunday.

TASCA RACING TO COMPETE AT TOPEKA'S NHRA HEARTLAND NATIONALS

Tasca Racing has announced that they will be competing in the NHRA Heartland Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka in Kansas the weekend of May 19-21. Gary Crossley Ford will sponsor the Mustang Funny Car driven by Bob Tasca III at the event.

“Todd Crossley, the owner of Crossley Ford, is a close friend of mine and I’m proud to represent his family and team back at the dealership out on the track," said Tasca. "The number one question I get asked at the track is why Ford pulled out of NHRA racing. Truthfully, I really don’t know why but I strongly believe that they will come back. Right now, we have people, like Todd, who see the value in NHRA and want to help keep Tasca Racing and the Ford name out on the track."

Blake Bowser is convinced he was born to be exactly where he is today as president and general manager of Auto Club Raceway - Famoso. 

Bowser was drafted into the life when he was seven, working at the track's souvenir stand back in the 1970s. He went from picking up trash at the track to being a track operator. Racing jobs are the only jobs he's ever had. 

Bowser, 49, and his dad John are the tag team who also run the Kern County Racing Association, as well produce one of the most famous drag race events of all-time, the March Meet.

TEAM OWNER STRINGER, DRIVER MILLICAN FEED OFF OF FAMILY ATMOSPHERE

Doug Stringer knew it was love at first sight, the moment he saw the 18-wheeler pull into his driveway. 

And for Clay Millican, the timing couldn't have been better. 

Stringer, in 2004 was a NASCAR team owner, with Kasey Kahne as his driver, and a marketing relationship with Great Clips. 

Millican, at the time, was struggling to remain in drag racing, he'd just endured the toughest regular season of his Top Fuel career, having missed the Countdown following a difficult split with Bob Vandergriff Racing. He was finishing up a season with Dexter Tuttle with an uncertain future. 

TORRENCE THE TALLER OF THE TWO TEXANS IN TOP FUEL FINAL

The all-Texas Top Fuel final round of the Lucas Oil NHRA Southern Nationals stirred up some passion in winner Steve Torrence before he squared off Sunday afternoon against Tony Schumacher.

He boasted that he’s the “real Texan” of the two: “He’s just a transplanted Yankee,” Torrence said of his rival. Then the conservative Torrence referred to the more liberal state capital: “He lives in a place that ain’t even Texas – he lives in Austin.”

CAPPS DRIVES TO THIRD CONSECUTIVE FUNNY CAR VICTORY

Ron Capps is flexing his muscles.

The reigning NHRA nitro Funny Car world champion won his third race in a row when he captured the title at the Southern Nationals in Atlanta Sunday with a hole shot in the final round.

LAGANA WINS ‘B FINAL’ TOP FUEL RACE AT SYDNEY, NEWBY BEATS CRAMPTON

Thanks in part to the Dom Lagana-Lee Beard combination, Rapisarda Autosport International swiped three of the first four Top Fuel spots in last weekend’s Nitro Thunder at Sydney Dragway.
 
Lagana defeated RAI teammate Damien Harris in the “B Final” of the penultimate race in Season 2 of the 400 Thunder Australian Professional Drag Racing Series. Wayne Newby, who has raced with the NHRA in the United States, cemented his lead with only the June 8-11 Gulf Western Oil 50th Winternationals remaining. Newby used a holeshot to win the final round against seven-time NHRA winner Richie Crampton in a tire-smoking duel.

TONGLET WINS W.A.R. AGAINST BOSS IN BIKE FINAL

It was all-out WAR in Sunday’s final round of the Lucas Oil NHRA Southern Nationals.

Jerry Savoie and L.E. Tonglet race in the Pro Stock Motorcycle class under the White Alligator Racing banner. This showdown between teammates featured two Louisiana tough guys, one an alligator farmer down in the bayous of Cut Off, the other a firefighter from metro New Orleans. It was a battle between two champions: a young man and his elder, although the younger Tonglet earned his crown before Savoie did it last year.

BUTNER CLAIMS SECOND WIN WITH ATLANTA VICTORY

It took Bo Butner 46 national-event races to get his first NHRA Pro Stock victory when he won at Houston last month.

It took Butner two more races to get victory No. 2 as he won the Southern Nationals Sunday in Atlanta.
