Veteran Funny Car driver Terry Haddock claimed victory at the Texas Invitational for the second consecutive year, winning the exhibition event during the Stampede of Speed. Over two days of eliminations, Haddock defeated Kebin Kinsley and Frankie Taylor to secure the coveted champion’s belt.
“I didn’t see him the whole run,” Haddock said. “We wanted to come out here and do a good job and make our sponsors happy.”
On Saturday evening, Haddock faced Kinsley while Taylor raced Brandon Pesz, both showcasing impressive performances. Haddock won against Kinsley, while Taylor narrowly defeated Pesz.
“Saturday was pretty awesome,” Haddock said. “I love Funny Cars under the lights. There’s nothing better than stepping on the gas and seeing the header flames.”
For Taylor, the event offered an opportunity to race against a nitro Funny Car for the first time.
“That was cool as hell,” Taylor said, reflecting on his experience racing Haddock. “He was 50 mph faster and it was awesome.”
The two-day Texas Invitational highlighted various drag racing classes for the Stars of Texas Music Festival attendees. Taylor praised the event’s atmosphere: “The crowd was crazy last night. We loved that crowd.”
This year’s Texas Invitational featured a star-studded country music lineup, including a performance by Tracy Lawrence. Fans also enjoyed junior bull riding, vendor booths, and a large Beer Expo.
“The first three days of the Stampede of Speed exceeded all our expectations,” said Christie Meyer Johnson, co-owner of Texas Motorplex. “Our goal continues to be to make the Stampede of Speed THE destination event in October for racing, music, and family fun.”
