UPDATED FINAL – ASHLEY, FORCE, GLENN CLAIM RAIN-DELAYED NHRA WINTERNATIONALS WINS

It’s finally finished. The NHRA Winternationals, run in late March in Pomona, CA., was completed in April in Phoenix, AZ. The winner’s circle would have made even the most seasoned Hollywood script pale in comparison.

Funny Car legend John Force ended a two-year drought with a triumph at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals, besting Matt Hagan at Firebird Motorsports Park on Saturday in front of a packed crowd.

Force, the NHRA’s winningest driver, clocked 4.033 seconds at 318.24 mph in his PEAK Antifreeze & Coolant Chevrolet Camaro SS, securing his 156th career victory and first since April 2022, marking his eighth Winternationals win.

“I’m just facing the truth in life, that, you know, time’s running out, and I’m trying to hang on,” Force said. “This morning, I was talking about, ‘You know, maybe this is it, maybe I should just walk out the gate and go to the casino,’ and then all OF A sudden, you win, and your weight and your personality just change.

“I was mad, mad at myself [for losing in the Mission Challenge earlier in the day], and I started saying, ‘You just need to get out of the seat, you’re just too old for this stuff’ or ‘Get out there and fight the fight.’ And I did, and things went right. I got the win, so I’m excited.”

In Top Fuel, Justin Ashley claimed his third consecutive Winternationals victory, defeating Tony Schumacher with a pass of 3.802 at 330.15 mph in his Scag Power Equipment dragster, marking his 12th career victory.

“It’s very special. Even though is not in Pomona, the NHRA Winternationals is a very prestigious race so to win it once is extraordinary. To win in three times in a row is an incredible blessing,” Ashley said. “This event, the way everything played out, it was a test for our team and they came through just as they seemingly do every time. I think we needed this as a team.

“This was a huge round win. It’s just so special because you never know when you’ll be in another final, and you want to try to take advantage of that opportunity. You never know when you’re going to win your next race, so you just have to try and enjoy it. This one feels a little bit different, and a little bit different in a good way.”

Dallas Glenn defended his Pro Stock Winternationals title with a second straight win, defeating Erica Enders with a time of 6.537 at 209.14 mph in his RAD Torque Systems Chevrolet Camaro.

“I was just thinking that the last two times I’ve raced here in Phoenix, I’ve lost first round both times, so Phoenix hasn’t been the best place to me,” Glenn said. “I definitely wanted to finish that last one in Pomona. We tried some new things and kind of took a few runs to get it dialed in, but it definitely came around in the final. I just tried to do everything I can to hit everything I could on that one. I’m just glad to be able to get it done because I was feeling really good in Pomona.”

Bobby Cottrell won the Legends Nitro Funny Car division, defeating Jeff Arend in the final round.

Eliminations for the 39th annual NHRA Arizona Nationals will commence at 11 a.m. ET on Sunday at Firebird Motorsports Park.

SUNDAY FINAL – RAIN, HAIL POSTPONES FINALS AT WINTERNATIONALS, WILL BE COMPLETED IN PHOENIX
Unfortunately for racing fans, Mother Nature was Sunday’s final winner at the 64th annual NHRA Nationals at In-N-Out Burger Pomona (Calif.) Dragstrip. Those hoping to see a race to completion were instead treated to the wet stuff, both liquid and frozen.

Persistent afternoon rain forced the postponement of the final rounds of Top Fuel, Funny Car, and Pro Stock. They will be completed at the NHRA Arizona Nationals in Phoenix on April 5-7. That is the next event on the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series Circuit.

In Top Fuel, Tony Schumacher and Justin Ashley advanced to the finals.
Schumacher, who pilots the Leatherwood Distillery Dragster, is aiming to. Win his third career Winternationals crown. His first two came in 2004 and 2008.

Schumacher advanced to finals by defeating Terry Totten, Shawn Langdon, and Billy Torrence in consecutive rounds.

Schumacher clocked a 3.742-second time at 330.47 mph to defeat Torrence’s 3.786-second lap in the semis.

Schumacher, who has won an NHRA Top Fuel record 84 national events, last claimed a victory in Seattle on July 31, 2022. His last appearance in a final round came in 2023, when he lost in the finals to Ashley in Epping, N.H.

Ashley, the reigning Winternationals champion, defeated Shawn Reed, Steve Torrence, and Brittany Force to reach the final round. Against Force, Ashley won a pedal fest with a 4.19-second time compared to Force’s 4.626-second effort.

Ashley won six races a year ago, his most recent win coming on Aug. 13 in Topeka, Kan.

The Funny Car Winternationals final will pit legendary John Force against reigning world champ Matt Hagan.

Force defeated Jim Campbell, Bobby Bode, and Ron Capps on Sunday. Against Capps, Force ran a solid 3.922-second elapsed time, while Capps slowed to 8.390 seconds. Force has won an NHRA record 16 times at Pomona Dragstrip in his career, and he most recently won the Winternationals in 2014 when he beat Hagan in the finals.

Force has won an NHRA record 155 national events. The 16-time world champion last won at Charlotte’s spring race in 2022. Force last appeared in a final round in Dallas last fall, losing to Hagan.

Hagan had six wins last year, his last coming against Force in Dallas last fall. On Sunday, Hagan, who drives for Tony Stewart Racing, defeated Buddy Hull, Jeff Diehl, and J.R. Todd. Against Todd, Hagan clocked a 3.939-second time, while Todd slowed to 6.147 seconds.

As for Pro Stock, Erica Enders, the reigning world champ, is on a heater to start the season. Enders, who drives for Richard Freeman at Elite Motorsports, claimed the title at the Gatornationals earlier this month in Gainesville, Fla., and now rocketed to the final round of the Winternationals where she will face Dallas Glenn.

Enders defeated Fernando Cuadra Jr., Brandon Foster, and Greg Anderson. Against Anderson, Enders clocked a 6.523-second lap at 211.03 mph to defeat Anderson’s 6.540-second run at 210.01 mph.
Enders has 48 career NHRA Pro Stock national event wins, including four last season. She most recently won the Winternationals in 2022 when she beat her teammate, Aaron Stanfield.

Glenn pilots a Camaro for KB Titan Racing. He won the 2023 Winternationals, defeating Matt Hartford in the finals. Glenn’s last win was in Brainerd, Minn., in the fall of 2023. Glenn ousted Sienna Wildgust, David Cuadra, and Mason McGaha on Sunday. In the semis, Glenn clocked a 6.565-second run at 209.36 mph to defeat McGaha, who slowed to 7.342 seconds.

SATURDAY QUALIFYING – BRITTANY SETS THE PACE IN TOP FUEL, HAGAN, AND GLENN LEAD SOGGY ON THE SECOND DAY IN POMONA

Brittany Force has been about the wow factor for much of her Top Fuel drag racing career. But this season, the second-generation driver, who is driving under the Mark Christopher Auto Center banner this weekend, has a new focus.

Top runs are incredible attention-getters, but it’s the consistent ones that win races.

Force was quick and consistent on a rainy day in Southern California when the rains held qualifying at the NHRA Winternationals to just one session. None of Friday’s best runs held up as Force was joined atop the leaderboard by Matt Hagan (Funny Car) and Dallas Glenn (Pro Stock).

Force remained in the hunt for the top spot after the first day, as she finished third in Friday’s provisional qualifying thanks to a run of 3.783 seconds at 330.30. It was a run that was at the top of a day where the show was anything but the quality NHRA traditionally delivers.

In the fifth pair of Top Fuel dragsters, she blasted out the top run of the event, a 3.711, 335.73. It marked her first No. 1 qualifier of 2024 and No. 47 of her career.

“We are definitely ready for tomorrow,” Force said. “We wanted three [runs], but we got two, and it was two consistent runs. But they were two consistent runs, and that’s what we’ve been working on – consistent runs this season that went down the race track. We are not trying to make these crazy runs to light the [score]board on fire.

“Let’s get down there, get in the show. So far, we are in a good place and anxious to see what we can do tomorrow.”

Multi-time Top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher was second with a 3.735, while Friday’s leader Billy Torrence was third with a 3.745. Defending event champion Justin Ashley ended up sixth quickest with a 3.753, 329.18.

Due to there being 15 cars, Force gets a bye run in the first round.

With some of drag racing’s heaviest hitters on the outside looking in, Hagan had his Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage Mopar thundering as the sun set on the In-N-Out Pomona Dragstrip.

Hagan drove the Dickie Venables-tuned Funny Car to the strip quicker than anyone as his 3.893, 330 generated his 51st career No. 1 qualifier
and first this season.

Saturday was a long day for both competitors, their teams, and especially the race fans who paid to watch a show. Hagan was determind to pull his weight in the effort.

“It was really good to do a burnout, and backing up still see a bunch of fans after a long day of not knowing what was going to happen,” Hagan said. “It says a lot about the safety safari and their ability to put a good track underneath us. Hat’s off to those guys, the track is still a tricky challenge.

“They told me if you get in too thin, there’s not a lot of rubber, and with the right lane, it wants to suck you into the wall. [My crew] was like, ‘Just keep it in the middle.”

“I said, ‘No problem in a Funny Car.”

“It ran on all eight, and that’s something we got to focus on this year. We have to keep it running on all eight cylinders.”

As impressive as Hagan’s 3.893 was, it tied the earlier run by Ron Capps, but his speed beat out Capps’ 326.71. Second-generation racer Bob Bode was third with a 3.972, which edged out Cruz Pedregon’s 3.982.

Paul Lee rounded out the top five and got into the show at the expense of Alexis DeJoria. The McLeod driver stopped the clocks in 3.992 seconds at 321.42.

Buddy Hull rounded out the 16-car field with an off-pace 4.823 at only 173.38 miles per hour.

Glenn, the former NHRA Rookie of the Year, showcased his skills as a front-running driver, as he put himself in the best spot to defend his title.
He closed out qualifying with a run of 6.536 at 209.75 in his RAD Torque Systems Chevrolet Camaro.

Friday and Saturday were, indeed, night and day for Glenn.

“After the run I made yesterday, I wasn’t expecting to go up there and go No. 1,” Glenn said, moments after beating Cristian Cuadra to take home half of the #2Fast2Tasty Challenge. “We changed a bunch of stuff and they definitey put a tune-up in it. We were all qualified watching the cars as we got up there. I was starting to believe we might not be qualified by the time we get up there.

Glenn will open eliminations against KB Titan Racing teammate and rookie Sienna Wildgust.

“We basically rewired my entire car this morning,” Glenn explained. We changed so much stuff on it. We were not happy with it, and it had been doing some crazy stuff. It at least worked for one run, and we were pretty happy with it. The run felt amazing, and we made a really killer run. Pomona has always been up there as one of my favorite tracks. I’ve always loved coming here and hopefully we have it turned around.”

Defending world champion Erica Enders qualified second with a 6.547 at 210.73, and Camrie Caruso jumped to third thanks to a 6.557 at 208.88.

Only one round of the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge was completed on Saturday due to weather as well. Shawn Langdon and Steve Torrence both won the opening round in Top Fuel, while J.R. Todd and Austin Prock picked up the Funny Car victories. In Pro Stock, Glenn and Enders raced to Challenge wins.

Eliminations for the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals begin at 10 a.m. PT on Sunday at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip.

FRIDAY QUALIFYING – WITH THE THREAT OF BAD WEATHER ON SATURDAY, D-WILK, BILLY TORRENCE AND ENDERS MAKE THEIR MARK EARLY IN PONOMA WINTERS

The top runners in Friday’s qualifying just happened to be two nitro runners who have competed in the series sparingly. Still, in the NHRA Winternationals’ opening day, they didn’t miss a beat.

Daniel Wilkerson, competing in his first full season of Funny Car, raced to the provisional qualifying lead for Funny Cars. If the run holds, it will be the first of his career.

Joining Wilkerson atop the Pomona leaderboard was Billy Torrence (Top Fuel) and defending NHRA Pro Stock champion Erica Enders.

The first session Funny Car times were a bit off-pace, but Wilkerson had the most of any good fortunes as he stopped the clocks with a 4.014 at 314.31 in his 11,000-horsepower Scag Power Equipment Ford Mustang. The second-generation Wilkerson, took over driving for his father, Funny Car veteran Tim Wilkerson, calling the shots as crew chief. On Friday, it worked out wonderfully for the father-son duo.

“It was a little squirrely, but I got it to the end,” said Wilkerson, who will compete for NHRA Rookie of the Year honors this year. It got a little loose coming out of the middle of the track, and I was almost yelling at myself steering the car. But it worked out, and I was happy with it. All of this, it almost hasn’t set in yet, but it’s been a lot of fun so far.”

In a surprising measure, Jeff Diehl had the second-quickest run of Friday
After going 4.050 at 306.81, Chad Green, who won in Pomona last year to end the season, is third with a 4.110 at 302.96.

Torrence made the most of Friday’s single session, laying down a 3.745 elapsed time at 330.47 in his Capco Contractors dragster. If that holds, Torrence would earn his sixth career No. 1 qualifier, as both Torrence cars made strong runs during the lone qualifying session of the day. His son, Steve, is currently second after the four-time world champ went 3.750 at 328.30, giving the team plenty of momentum for the weekend. They also meet tomorrow in the opening round of the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge.

“I was very impressed with that run,” Torrence said. “I thought we could make a good run on the track. The guys have worked really hard on that setup, and I really thought Steve would sneak around us and pick up our pocket, but he just missed us. Performance-wise, I think the cars are really close. I think we’ve got a good set-up for a solid year.”

Brittany Force is in third place thanks to a run of 3.783 at 330.30, and Gainesville winner Shawn Langdon is right behind with a 3.788 at 318.24.

Enders wasted no time jumping to the front of the qualifying with a 6.556 at 211.69 in her Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage/Melling Performance/Scag Power Equipment car. If it holds, it would give Enders her second straight No. 1 qualifier to start the season. Enders, who also won in Gainesville, is after her 50th career national event victory this weekend, which would add another incredible milestone in her stellar career. Two years ago, Enders won at the Winternationals in what was the 900th race in Pro Stock history.

“It was a little bit of a hairy ride. It made some big moves, but I’m thankful for all the runs I have in these cars,” Enders said. “We’re big on numbers and going after that 50th win is very important to us. Winning my first Winternationals two years ago for the 900th Pro Stock race was pretty spectacular and we’re glad to be back here. Coming off a win at the Gatornationals, we’re just going to try to carry that momentum, but we definitely have a good racecar right now.”

Matt Hartford sits second with a 6.568 at 210.31 and Jeg Coughlin Jr. is third with a 6.573 at 211.20.

Qualifying continues at 11:30 a.m. ET on Saturday at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip

2024 NHRA WINTERNATIONALS – EVENT RESULTS
