SUNDAY FINAL – KALITTA BLASTS TO RECORD, CAPPS, HARTFORD AND HERRERA WIN AT NHRA 4-WIDE NATIONALS
Doug Kalitta rewrote the zMAX Dragway record book Sunday, using a 342.98-mph blast in the final round to headline the winners at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals. Ron Capps, Matt Hartford, and Gaige Herrera also claimed victories in Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle.
Kalitta drove his Mac Tools dragster to a 3.692-second run, the fastest speed ever recorded at the facility and the third-fastest run in NHRA history. The reigning Top Fuel champion earned his second win of the season and the 60th of his career.
Shawn Langdon left first in the final quad, but Kalitta charged past Langdon, Tony Stewart, and Leah Pruett before the finish line. It marked Kalitta’s third career victory in Charlotte.
Kalitta also became the first Top Fuel driver with two wins in 2026. After titles in two of the past three seasons, his early form has only strengthened his standing as the points leader.
“Alan [Johnson, crew chief] thought it was going to run over 340 mph, so that was good,” Kalitta said. “I don’t know how he predicts these things, but the guy’s a wizard tuning these cars and I’m just very, very fortunate.
“It’s a hell of an opportunity to work with him, and Connie’s [Kalitta, team owner] given us everything we need with all three of our cars. I’m sure he is pretty proud of what we accomplished.
“The guys pulled through for me. I was really happy to see that light when it came on. We had a lot of support here and this is the kind of race you want to win.”
Langdon finished runner-up, while Pruett was third.
Capps continued one of the strongest starts in Funny Car, winning for the second time in three races with a 3.905 at 334.90 in his NAPA Auto Care Toyota GR Supra. He defeated Jack Beckman, Matt Hagan, and J.R. Todd in the final round.
Capps qualified No. 1 and posted the quickest Funny Car run of eliminations with a 3.865 at 333 in the opening round. He then advanced from the semifinals and left first in the final.
The victory was the 79th of his career and fifth in Charlotte, the most among active Funny Car drivers. It also gave the three-time champion his third straight final-round appearance.
“I still can’t believe it,” Capps said. “You have cars like this at times in your career and you just don’t want to mess up as a driver.
“Any driver will tell you this and if they don’t, they’re lying, but it’s like you’re given this to not screw up and to cut a light and, most importantly, drive it, keep it as straight as possible in a Funny Car.”
Beckman was runner-up, while Hagan finished third and moved to second in points.
Hartford broke through for his first win at zMAX Dragway, driving his Total Seal Chevrolet Camaro to a 6.526 at 210.05 in the Pro Stock final. He defeated Cody Coughlin, Greg Anderson, and Matt Latino.
The victory was Hartford’s second in four races this season and the 10th of his career. He also won the season opener in Gainesville before early exits in Phoenix and Pomona.
Hartford advanced through the first quad, then moved into the final after finishing second to Anderson in the semifinals. In the final, his .024 reaction time and a 6.526 quickest elapsed time sealed the win.
“If you’re going to win in this class, you pretty much have to leave ahead of everybody and that’s really hard to do,” Hartford said. “I struggle with it.”
“I was .024 in the final and I thought that was great for me, especially on the four-wide. There’s a lot going on. It’s very confusing, and I just took my time, made sure I was ready and rolled in.”
Coughlin was runner-up, Anderson placed third, and Dallas Glenn retained the points lead.
Herrera completed a weekend sweep in Pro Stock Motorcycle, following
his Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge win with Sunday’s title. He rode his RevZilla/Motul/Vance & Hines Suzuki to a 6.758 at 199.88.
Herrera beat reigning champion Richard Gadson, Clayton Howey, and Chase Van Sant in the final quad. It was his first victory of the season and the 29th of his NHRA career.
Both Gadson and Howey left ahead of Herrera, but he tracked them down before the stripe. The win was Herrera’s third four-wide victory in Charlotte and fourth overall at the facility.
“I knew we all were going to push the tree in the final and I think that’s the tightest I’ve seen a four-wide final in the bike category,” Herrera said. “It’s pretty cool to have all Suzukis in the final, too.
“Losing the second round in Gainesville lit a fire under me and I didn’t want that to happen to me again this weekend. I knew I had to be better as a rider at everything and feel like this weekend I proved it to myself.”
Gadson was runner-up and remains the points leader, while Howey finished third.
The NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series returns to action May 1-3 at South Georgia Motorsports Park for the NHRA Southern Nationals.
SATURDAY QUALIFYING – LANGDON, CAPPS, ANDERSON, AND SMITH HOLD NO. 1 SPOTS AT NHRA 4-WIDE NATIONALS
Saturday gave the field two more shots at Friday’s leaders at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals. Nobody could capitalize.
Shawn Langdon stayed No. 1 in Top Fuel, Ron Capps held the top spot in Funny Car, Greg Anderson remained first in Pro Stock, and Matt Smith kept the lead in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
Langdon’s 3.674-second run at 339.19 mph in the Kalitta Air dragster could not be bettered, and it gave him his second No. 1 qualifier of the season. The former champion said the car is responding to every change the team tries.
“The car is responding really well to the things that we’re asking it to do, and Brian’s [Husen] making the right calls, and the guys are doing a great job putting the car together,” Langdon said. “So everything’s just kind of clicking right now. We’re just kind of doing what the car is showing us, and it’s making some really good laps.”
Langdon opens eliminations against Spencer Massey, Jasmine Salinas, and Dan Mercier. Leah Pruett qualified second and Doug Kalitta was third.
Capps’ Friday pass of 3.883 at 333.91 in the NAPA Toyota GR Supra held for the 39th No. 1 qualifier of his career. His first quad includes Austin Prock, Spencer Hyde, and Chad Green.
“I love having Dean as a guy to go to battle with, because he can adapt pretty quickly,” Capps said of crew chief Dean Antonelli. “There are legitimately 12 Funny Cars that can win on any given day, and it wasn’t always that way.”
Jordan Vandergriff qualified second and Matt Hagan was third.
In Pro Stock, Anderson’s Friday run of 6.498 at 211.23 in the HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro was the only 6.40-second pass of the weekend and delivered the 143rd No. 1 qualifier of his career. He followed it by winning the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge on Saturday.
That sends him into Sunday with speed, lane choice, and momentum.
“The run on Friday night just matched the race track perfectly,” Anderson said. “The race track actually got better again today, and we missed a little bit and that’s why we didn’t run as well today. We’re probably overhooked on the racetrack, which is a great problem to have.”
He opens against Eric Latino, Troy Coughlin Jr., and Rodger Brogdon. Dallas Glenn qualified second and Matt Latino was third.
Matt Smith’s No. 1 spot came with history attached.
His 6.739 at 203.09 gave him the 60th No. 1 qualifier of his career, moving him past Angelle Sampey for the most in class history – and he did it at his home track.
“I’ve had a good career with at least running fast,” Smith said, “and to do this at my home track makes it even more special.”
Ryan Oehler qualified second and Herrera was third.
Eliminations for the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals begin at noon Eastern on Sunday at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte.
#2FAST#2TASTY RECAP – MILLICAN, VANDERGRIFF, ANDERSON, AND HERRERA SCORE #2FAST2TASTY WINS AT NHRA FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS
Saturday at zMAX Dragway delivered what the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge was designed to create — meaningful rounds, pressure situations, and drivers treating bonus racing like it counted.
By the end of the afternoon, Clay Millican, Jordan Vandergriff, Greg
Anderson, and Gaige Herrera left with specialty-race victories at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals.
For Millican and Vandergriff, the wins carried extra weight, as it was their first victory in a four-wide format.
Millican had reached eight prior four-wide final rounds without closing the deal. He changed that Saturday, driving the Rick Ware Racing Parts Plus dragster to a 3.832 at 325.14 mph to win a Top Fuel quad that included Billy Torrence, Josh Hart, and points leader Doug Kalitta.
Kalitta left first, but Millican’s .076-second reaction time put him in position to hold off Torrence, whose quicker 3.820 came too late after giving away ground on the starting line. Kalitta fell off the pace with a 3.894 to end up third.
“To win on a holeshot is crazy, but we went right down the racetrack,” Millican said. “The team is slowly but surely getting better and better. We had our struggles; I had to learn to drive a canopy car. I’m still not quite there yet.”
Millican said the bigger picture was momentum for eliminations and delivering a home-track win for team owner Rick Ware.
“We are planning on going back-to-back, but it’s really cool that Rick can say he won at his home race,” Millican said. “It’s a big deal for us and it’s a big deal for Rick.”
Funny Car produced the tightest finish of the session.
Vandergriff used a .067 reaction time and a 3.933 at 325.85 in his Cornwell Tools Chevrolet SS to win on a double holeshot over Ron Capps, J.R. Todd, and Matt Hagan. Vandergriff tripped the timers .0022 seconds ahead of Capps.
Todd matched Vandergriff’s elapsed time, while Capps was quicker at 3.929. Neither left early enough to keep the John Force Racing driver from claiming the win.
“This is my first time racing four-wide, and it’s interesting, for sure,” Vandergriff said. “This last run, I was in lane two and it’s a little trickier looking across the tree, but it seemed to work out.”
The former FOX Sports interviewer said the process of driving a Funny Car is slowing down for him as he gains experience.
“I’m getting more and more comfortable in the car,” Vandergriff said, adding, “I’m starting to get the handle on the steering wheel and feel
for the car.”
Greg Anderson continued to be the man to beat in Pro Stock.
Fresh off securing his third straight No. 1 qualifier of the four-race season, Anderson added a #2Fast2Tasty victory with a 6.549 at 207.11 in his HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro, defeating Matt Latino, Aaron Stanfield, and Eric Latino.
The six-time Pro Stock champion has opened the season looking like the
category’s pacesetter and made no effort to hide his satisfaction.
“I got Dallas today,” Anderson said, referring to teammate Dallas Glenn. “We got him [two weeks ago] in the final at Pomona and today in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, so it was a good day for GA and a good day for Hendrick Cars, and a great day for KB Titan.”
That sounded like a veteran enjoying both speed and scoreboard leverage.
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Herrera again proved why he remains one of the toughest riders in the class.
The two-time champion rode his Suzuki to a 6.759 at 199.20 and used a class-best .018 reaction time to defeat Matt Smith, Richard Gadson, and John Hall.
Smith nearly stole it with a 6.760, but Herrera’s start was the deciding edge.
“It’s a boost for the team and myself, just for working hard on not only on the bike, but me physically,” Herrera said. “It was a tough quad between John Hall, Matt, and Richard. I knew I had to be on the tree.”
Herrera said the format gives racers a reason to attack twice during a weekend rather than solely on Sunday.
“It’s awesome Mission does this,” he said. “After Friday, it’s basically two days of racing. You wake up Saturday and Sunday with a different attitude.”
FRIDAY QUALIFYING – LANGDON, CAPPS, ANDERSON AND SMITH LEAD FRIDAY QUALIFYING AT NHRA FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS
Friday night at zMAX Dragway sorted out quickly once the conditions came around.
When the sun dropped and the racing surface tightened, veterans took over the top of the qualifying sheets as Shawn Langdon, Ron Capps, Greg Anderson, and Matt Smith moved into provisional No. 1 positions at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals.
Langdon led Top Fuel with the only 3.60-second run of the day, posting a 3.674 at 339.19 mph in the final quad Friday night. The former NHRA champion was quickest in both sessions and continued a sharp early season pace for the Kalitta Air team.
“It’s just a testament to the team,” Langdon said. “The guys have done a great job giving me a great race car. It’s all the hard work that they did in the off-season, a lot of things that they looked at to try to improve on from last year in the last two years, and just little by little, it’s been shown.”
Langdon said the team believes it has a car capable of adapting to changing conditions.
“We feel pretty confident right now that if the track conditions are hot, we feel like we can make the necessary changes,” he said. “Then, when we get situations like this, where you try to throw down a little bit, we have a good handle on that as well.”
Leah Pruett was second at 3.700, while points leader Doug Kalitta was third at 3.711.
In Funny Car, Capps used the best air of the day to move to the top with a 3.883 at 333.91 in his Toyota GR Supra. It puts him in line for his second No. 1 qualifier of the season and the 39th of his career.
“This is classic zMAX,” Capps said. “The first run, there was a little humidity, and the track hadn’t been run on and everybody was tiptoeing. But this place is always good, and when the sun goes down, it’s great.”
Capps knew his team was preparing to take a serious shot at the top spot.
“We started hearing the good numbers being run ahead of us, and I could hear ‘Guido’ on the radio,” Capps said of crew chief Dean Antonelli. “I knew he was getting after it.”
Jordan Vandergriff was second at 3.899, while Matt Hagan, fresh off the 1,000th Funny Car victory in Pomona, sat third at 3.901.
Anderson again paced Pro Stock, running 6.498 at 211.23 in his Chevrolet Camaro. The six-time champion was the only driver in the 6.40s and is positioned for his third straight No. 1 qualifier this season and the 143rd of his career.
“It did feel very good. I can’t lie,” Anderson said. “Sometimes when you make a run, you say to yourself that we felt pretty damn good, and that’s what I said going down the race track. The scoreboard matched
what I thought. I had fun today.”
The run also came with sponsor Rick Hendrick in attendance.
“Mr. H was out here today, and he had a good time,” Anderson said. “He left before the second run and he called a little bit before it went up, and he’s like, ‘Make sure you don’t lose that pole.’ So I guess I got a little extra pressure there and got orders from the boss, and we got the job done.”
Dallas Glenn was second at 6.521, while Matt Latino was third at 6.527.
Smith took over Pro Stock Motorcycle with a 6.739 at 203.09 on his Buell at his home track. If the run holds, Smith will earn the 60th No. 1 qualifier of his career and move past Angelle Sampey for the most in class history.
“I didn’t think it would stick. I drove to the center line, but all in all, it did stick, and we’re No. 1,” Smith said. “This is a great place to race and I love the four-wide. It’s a challenge and I’m getting old, and I like more challenges as I’m getting old.”
Smith said there was more left in the run had the bike not slightly strayed off-course.
“I think if the bike had gone straight there, I would have gotten a little bit more 60-foot, and I think I could have gone .71 there,” Smith said. “If people can go faster than that, they deserve to be No. 1.”
Ryan Oehler was second, while Gaige Herrera was third.
Saturday qualifying begins at 12:30 p.m. EDT with final sessions scheduled at zMAX Dragway, followed by the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge bonus races.
