It didn’t take IHRA long to fill the opening caused when the President’s Cup Nationals fell off the schedule. IHRA also chose to lean on its staple categories for an event to run at one of its newly purchased facilities.
The IHRA Outlaw Pro Mod Nationals will take place at Kil-Kare Raceway on August 8-9, in a format similar to the old Nitrous Nationals format in the early 1990s. The marquee category, Pro Modified, offers a winner’s purse of $125,000.
Mountain Motor Pro Stock will pay $15,000 to the winner, while Top Sportsman will have a payout of $6,000. These categories are key components of the IHRA’s return under owner Darryl Cuttell.
Pro Modified originated from the Top Sportsman division, gaining professional status with its debut in March 1990 at Darlington Dragway. Mountain Motor Pro Stock made its debut in 1977, creating an unlimited displacement format that distinguished it from other sanctioning bodies.
Top Sportsman evolved from the old AHRA’s Top Comp Eliminator, starting as a 64-car bracket category called Pro Street before becoming an exclusively full-bodied division in 1993. The IHRA’s return will highlight these foundational categories of doorslammer racing.
The event will include three qualifying sessions for each class on Friday, followed by eliminations on Saturday. After the final qualifying session, a chip draw will take place for all three categories.
Friday night will feature a Crown Vic charity race at the nearby Speedway, where drivers scheduled to race in eliminations will team up in Crown Victorias. The first-round winners will compete for a $5,000 donation to a charity of their choice through a 50-lap feature, with each driver covering 25 laps.
